    K&M 17550 reviews

17550 Memphis Travel Guitar Stand is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best travel stand made, be careful w nitrocellulose guitars This is a high quality, cleverly engineered stand at a value price. It folds up tiny and is super lightweight, yet plenty strong. That said, it is truly intended as a travel, or temporary use stand. It is perfectly stable for short term use, in low traffic areas, especially if it's set up in a corner or near a wall--locations that add protection from knocking into it. Still, this stand is a huge improvement over just leaning your guitar against an amp, or having to set it down in the case between tunes. But I would not use this stand for long term or high traffic applications, for which I'd prefer a larger stand that offers greater protection. Still, I would not hesitate to recommend this stand to those who need a very portable stand. With the Memphis Travel stand, it's particularly wonderful that the same stand can be adjusted for acoustics as well as electric guitars. That avoids the need to buy or carry multiple stands, and works fine for gigs where one is switching among different kinds of guitars. I would have rated it 5 stars, but deducted one star for the fact that the plastic surfaces that contact the guitar are not explicitly labeled as safe for nitrocellulose guitar finishes. In fact K & M makes many great guitar stands, but only this model 17550 seems to use that plastic cushion surface (on the arms), and this is the only stand for which K & M makes a separate set of cotton covers, to protect instrument finish from the stand. That tells me there is reason to be concerned about leaving nitro finished guitars on the uncovered surfaces for any significant time. But to B&H's credit, the normally optional cotton covers were included in the price of the stand. It is well established that many or most brands of stands react badly with nitrocellulose finishes, so this one is not noteworthy for being nitro unfriendly. It just would have been nicer if K & M used a finish safe padding material on an otherwise stellar product. Best travel stand I have found.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small - Light - Fits in Your Bag I'm a fan of Konig & Meyer products. Typically, they are well engineered and beautifully produced, and the Memphis Travel Guitar Stand (17550) follows in that same tradition. At 14 oz., it's not going to weigh you down, and with measurements of 11.25 L x 3 W x 2 D, it will fit it most gig bags with ease. But don't let it's small size fool you. It's clever design, which is EASY to fold and unfold, set's up in seconds, and will hold even a heavy bass without a problem (Rickenbacker 4003), AND, to top it off, the two support arms are adjustable, allowing it to hold either an electric OR acoustic guitar of varying depths. Neat. Is it as stable as a regular heavy duty guitar stand? Not quite, but with care it will hold most guitars and basses just fine. I say most, because, for instance, it's not that great for a guitars or bass with an asymmetrical end, like a Fender Jazz Bass. Those kinds of guitars and basses work better in something like the K&M Memphis Pro guitar stand, which hangs the instrument from it's neck, which is what I use for my Jazz Bass. I can make the Memphis Travel stand work for my Jazz Bass, but I have to think about it and work at it, and even then it's kind of wobbly, and that simply does not work for me. So, like most things, it's a matter of picking the right tool for the job, and the job this stand is best suited for would be where a small, light weight stand was needed, and the guitar or bass has a symmetrical end that will rest on the stand. The other point that might be of concern to some folks is the type of material used where the guitar will come into contact with the stand, as some materials will adversely affect older guitars finishes. This stand uses some type of hard rubber material at those points, but does NOT specify that it is safe for all finishes, so keep that in mind. B and H did include (an no cost), the K&M accessory cotton covers for this stand, and they work fine for that purpose.
