Tiffen Indie Overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 77mm Indie ND Filter Kit is a complete filter outfit (4 filters) for the outdoor shooter who wishes to create special effects without having to put in any post-production time. This combination of neutral density filters gives you the freedom to make some unique and effective images that would ordinarily not be possible.

The kit contains a 1-stop (0.3), 2-stop (0.6), 3-stop (0.9) and 4-stop (1.2) set of ND filters. Using these filters permits you to use slower shutter speeds that can produce blurred effects of nature, sports or any action you choose, i.e. flowing water, birds in flight, cars - just about anything you can think of. It also permits you to shoot on the beach or in bright light when using high speed ISO ratings by enabling slower shutter speeds to be employed.  Irrespective of the medium you are using such as film, digital, video or cine, neutral density filters are quite valuable and should be a part of any shooter's arsenal of tools.

Often it is necessary or desirable to control the light intensity within a given frame. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. A neutral density filter will allow you to retain exposure control but will not affect the color of the image.

Neutral Density filters allow you to shoot under conditions that would normally be impossible to shoot under - particularly outside in snow, beach or extreme bright light scenarios. For the landscape photographer, irrespective of the format you use (film, digital, video or cine), this filter is almost a necessity because it permits you to maintain creative control over a tough lighting venue while still maintaining proper exposure.

For those who like moody, soft creative looks to their images, this filter can produce blurred movement when used with waterfalls, fast moving objects (cars, etc) and even nature subjects such as birds in flight or running animals. There are people who even use them on their iPhone to capture interesting images when a traditional camera isn't handy.

Tiffen uses the highest quality Water White Glass that contains an anti-glare and anti-reflective coating. This glass reduces the greenish tint sometimes common in standard glass. Water White Glass permits accurate color transmission. It is clear to the eye and is characterized by an optically pure composition that delivers the highest caliber of image possible.

Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

Enables slow shutter speeds to be used with high speed ISO ratings; create dramatic images with blurred movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
Permits greater creative control by allowing wider apertures to be used which helps separate subjects from their background
Reduces the amount of light entering the lens - allows use of slower shutter speeds with higher ISO settings on digital cameras, high-speed films, video and cine cameras
It is always difficult to use film, digital or video cameras under bright light conditions such as snow, sand or other bright scenes since these conditions can easily cause overexposure. This filter removes the challenge of recording images under these conditions by permitting the photographer to control the proper exposure while still maintaining creative control

    Tiffen Indie Reviews

    77mm Indie ND Filter Kit (1, 2, 3, 4-Stop) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I bought the kit to use on a short film I was working on to try to get more depth of field. I was shooting with the 24-105mm Canon lens and this kit is the perfect compliment. The visual quality was just spectacular and I couldn't have hoped for more from these filters. They are also stackable so you have even more range with your filters, which was an added bonus. The kit also includes a very nice carrying case, with enough space and padding that I feel comfortable storing them in. This was a great investment and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent neutral cast I use these filters in unison with my colorchecker card for optimized color profiles with each shoot, and I'm happy to say I've no issues with color shifts in either direction. A good deal of my dslr photography and video has been on the beach around midday lately, and these filters have been stellar at expanding my photographic capabilities. Each filter comes wrapped in it's own tissue paper wrapping when it first arrives, and I've elected to keep it in this paper while not in use. Regardless, they've proven quite durable and scratch resistant. (Tested first hand by an inexperienced friend who tried cleaning the .6 with his graphic t-shirt covered in sand. .)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for low budget HD Shoots We recently received this set at work for our Canon 5D Mk IIIs. I've always been impressed with Tiffen's products and these ND filters live up to the company's great name. Clear image and very little to no color change make these filters the perfect pairing with my 85mm prime lens. There is a little bit of flare, not much, but noticeable if you know what to look for. And they came a bit dirty out of the case, but they were easily cleaned. I'm very happy with this product and I'll be looking to Tiffen first for any additional filter needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best ND filter I've used Awesome image quality. The sharpest ND i've used. In the past I used fader nds and there's no comparison. No color shifts. The images are tack sharp. Even with just the basic 1-4 stop kit you'll be able to screw on a combination of filters to get you up to 7 stops with two filters. I purchased the filter kit without IR because of Shane's advice on his blog that the IR will bleed colors. Best purchase I've made for my glasses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good ND for the money Sharp glass and, as long as i've noticed, no color shift. Basically these were the only things i was looking for in vari-ND filters at the same price range but failed to find. Of course that having many filters instead of just one can make things a little more complicated, but in the end i prefer a kit of good quality filters in front of my expensive lens than one cheaper piece of glass that cause aberrations. With this Tiffen kit i could get this quality and not break the bank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filters and excellent value I was very interested in trying these after reading Shane Hurlbut's recommendation. First off, it is an excellent value, 4 filters for under $300. I'm using them on my 60D with Canon 24-105 f4.0L, Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ZE, Zeiss 50mm f2.0 ZE. So I'm not going to put cheap glass in front of those optics. I used this set on an INT/EXT summer shoot. Fantastic results. I have not done any quantitative comparisons. They just seem to work excellently. IR or non-IR? Shane definitely seems to recommend going with the non-IR. Of course, that could change any day. Two cons, but minor. I did not find any instructions. Instructions for ND filters, am I a moron? No, but still, when I buy something I like getting instructions. Also, they come in a nice pouch, but wrapped in tissue paper, not separate little filter cases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't shoot video without this!!! This set of filters is great for video. I have both sets and I use them all the time. I started with just the 1.5 - 2.1 set but it was a bit strong for these cloudy days in the south island of New Zealand. The pouch is great as well. You can just clip it to your belt and you're ready to go. It's a good investment if you're shooting indie narrative films. You can still use this with a matte box if your matte box swings away for easy access. For documentary work and run n gun I still prefer the Vari ND especially when I'm shooting in a sunny day with some clouds and I need to correct the exposure smoothly on the spot without changing the ISO or stoping the recording. But you can shoot documentary and interviews with this set but be prepared to change ISO if you need to correct exposure on the spot when the sun comes out suddenly. I'm very happy with this set of filters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good stuff I ding them one star for not being available in cinema 80mm size. Otherwise, much better than all the variable ND's out there.
