Telephoto zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount cameras and provides an 82.5-450mm equivalent focal length.
One high refractive index element is used to reduce spherical aberrations, field curvature, and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.
VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED V... Reviews

Functional for the price, but with serious drawbacks

Having recently purchased Nikon DX equipment after using Olympus Four-Thirds (not micro4/3) equipment since 2006, some of my observations leverage that perspective in this review. For the money this is a practical lens for shooters who value having a few more framing and shooting options at each end of the familiar 70-200mm range. Typical for zoom lenses, the top end (260~300mm) is noticeably softer than the midrange. Much of my shooting recently has been wildlife, and since acquiring the lens I've been situated in Tucson focusing on birds. At times the lens (coupled with a D7500) can be slow auto-focusing when light is more than abundant, but at this price point its performance is generally acceptable. My biggest disappointments with the lens are in two areas. (1) All my Olympus lenses — including the least expensive kit lenses that came with an E500 — have manual focus rings with plenty of throw permitting precise manual focusing in situations when intervening limbs or fences challenge the auto-focus. By plenty of throw I'm referring to a rather large adjustment of the ring to make small and precise adjustments in the focal plane. The manual focus ring on this Nikkor lens is *extremely* frustrating: the smallest rotation of the ring results in a large increment (or decrement) in the focal plane. It's very difficult to obtain precise focus using the manual focusing ring. This lens needs a radical change in the gearing of its manual focusing ring if it is to be of any practical use. (2) This lens is not compatible with any Nikon teleconverter. So, if you already have a TC-14E II or III (or another Nikon teleconverter) that you're thinking of using with this lens, forget it. Nikon USA says this lens is incompatible with any of them. [For Z body users, Nikon USA says that this lens *is* compatible with the Nikon FTZ mount adapter.] Oly lenses, even 35mm OM lenses, were compatible with Oly DSLR teleconverters, so this complication was not one I had anticipated.

I worked professionally for over 20 years as a photojournalist and commercial photographer and now teach it to HS students. I Have purchased eight of these lenses so far for use on our schools D5300s and D5600s for photography students to use shooting our football games. Great lenses at a great price! If youre on a tighter budget, I highly recommend buying used from B&H. Look for the ones that are lightly used/excellent/near mint. My first three were used. A great affordable lens for entry level and the prosumer!

I had this same lens for 8 years. It was my total go to lens. It is always attached to my camera, I only change lenses if I need to go really long or wide angle. It is a great all around lens. My old lens started to have some Auto focus issues and since I used the heck out of it I decided to let it retire and get a new one.

Great lens for the money!!

The auto focus is fast and quiet. VRII works great. I can stop a hornet's wings with no problem and have gotten some nice pictures of falcons and hawks without a tripod. I chose this model over the AF-P 70-300mm because of the metal connection to my D7500. The AF-P is made of plastic. Not a pro lens but it works for me.

I'm an aging nature photographer. This lens suits me perfectly because it is light to carry and zooms out enough to capture wildlife nicely. I'd like a faster lens for low light situations, but my Nikon D7500 has great ability to handle noise, so it's a good match.

It is a used lens but takes great photos. It does have a scratchy noise to it but I have had it a month and its doing great.

compatible with D750?
Asked by: James
This lens only covers an APS-C Sized Sensor. The D750 is a full frame camera. You could use this lens with the D750, but it will be in a Cropped Mode and not make usage of the entire sensor of the camera.
