Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Possibly the single most versatile lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR from Nikon spans a useful wide-angle to short-telephoto range and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. Three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Also benefitting image quality, both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Supporting the optics is VR II image stabilization, which compensates for camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld. A Silent Wave Motor is also used to provide fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override.

Standard zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 36-180mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Reviews

The Workhorse

I've been shooting people events with this lens for several years. It has never let me down. Tack sharp, excellent color & contrast. Recently I tried the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR zoom just to compare. I could not find any case where that lens made superior images. It costs twice as much. It's heavier. It wasn't as fast to bring up, compose and shoot as this smaller/lighter lens with it's longer range. For me there is no need to look further. If you'll be banging into other photographers on a news assignment or hiking through tropical humidity, get the 24-70 f/2.8 VR. It's probably more durable. But I'm retired. I take care of my gear. In this environment, the 24-120 f/4 can't be beat.

This has been my go-to lens for years! I use it for most of my shoots, and it always works wonders! The glass is super crisp and clear, you get so much out of this lens! Here are some photos I've taken with it.

This is my 2nd 24/120 mm lens. The first lens 24/120 mm 3.5 - 5.6 G. 72 mm was my first SLR lens which I had for over 16 years!! Unfortunately, there are no parts available to fix the vibrations it was having. So I brought the 24-120 mm 1.4 G ED 77mm lens. It is great, with 77 mm to let in more light. Ed in MI.

A great kit lens

This lens came with my D-810 when I bought it a couple of years ago, so I guess you could call it a kit lens. This is the most versatile lens I have in my bag, and there are a few lenses in there. I have used it for just about everything, weddings, location portraiture, landscapes, product and still life. This lens is rarely taken off my camera. I would be lost without it and if anything were to happen to it, I'd have another on order immediately. I highly recommend this lens.

My most versatile lens!

I am impressed with the versatility of this lens; from landscapes to portraits and indoor events. I've had a great experience with it all. There's a bit of vignetting at it's widest point (nothing Photoshop can't fix) and it's on the heavier side, which is to be expected with this size lens and quality glass. Overall, I'm super happy with the results and will be keeping it in my professional kit for quite a while.

Excellent Zoom Lens!

I've been using this lens for almost nine years. Have shot thousands of RAW files with it, first on a D800 and the last year on a Z7. I've shot location and studio portraits with it, I've shot editorial location, and I've shot architecture and interiors with it, and been on very rough construction sites with it all day. I even shot a 'Gladiator Run' all afternoon in 100+ heat. I have shot fine art landscape with it. I work all my files in LR Classic and finish in PS. I'm attaching a shot from 2020 of pecan trees in the winter. Sharpness is MORE than excellent. The new 24-200 Z is supposed to be even better, when it's finally available.

Great lens from NIKON as usual.

question

I love this lens except that it isn't razor sharp until I stop done to about f5. Is this 'normal' for this lens or do I have a lemon? Does anyone know of a similar lens that is razor sharp at f4?

The, Nikon 24-120 is a sharp lens. But like most lenses wide open and towards the edges are not as sharp as closed down. But if you do feel you might have an issue with the lens you should come into chat, call or email us at B&H.

Trying to decide between this lens, the Nikon 24-120mm F/4G or the Nikon 24-70mm F/2.8. I'd call myself a very amateur landscape photographer and that is what the lens would be used for the most, taking landscape photos while hiking. Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated?
Asked by: Shawn
Depends on the subject matter but if you are shooting low light go with the F2.8 work horse. If you are looking for a all around day to mid-day lens the 24-120 is a great lens to have for family outings and more.
