Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an FX format lens that is also compatible with DX-format DSLR cameras. The lens features a broad zoom range from wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, and it close-focuses down to 18" at every focal length.

The VR II image stabilization compensates for camera shake providing up to 3.5 shutter speeds stops of shake control to enable handheld shooting in dim light and at telephoto focal lengths. The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system provides smooth and quiet AF action which is particularly helpful when shooting video. For precise focusing the lens provides an M/A focus mode switch which allows the photographer to quickly change between manual and autofocus modes.

The optical construction includes two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements which reduce aberrations to provide sharp, color-accurate images throughout the frame. The lens elements have been treated with Nikon's Super Integrated Coating - an optical lens coating process that maximizes light transmission while enhancing clarity and contrast. A rounded 9-blade aperture helps to create pleasing background highlights.

Versatile 10.7x FX-format Zoom Lens
Versatile zoom lens offers a broad focal length range that's perfect for travel, landscapes, portraits, and distant subjects.
Compatible with FX and DX-Format DSLRs
The DX-format DSLR angle of view is equivalent to a 35mm format focal length of 42-450mm.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Vibration Reduction system is engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens. It enables handheld shooting at up to 3.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focusing.
Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Elements
Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture setting.
Three Aspherical Lens Elements
Aspherical lens elements virtually eliminate coma and other aberrations, even when shooting wide open.
Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocus. It also keeps the front element from rotating, which maintains the position of a polarizer filter or lens hood.
M/A Focus Mode Switch
Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.

Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 780.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best prosumer superzoom! I am using this lens for 3 years. In its class of prosumer superzooms it is still the best, nothing even close, as for today. Amazingly sharp, fast and consistent focusing, high contrast/color ratio, great range (actually, it is 28-280mm lens, but it isn't show stopper!), very small CA. I am using it for some pro applications, with great success. Especially if it is impossible to carry anything else. On negative side - to improve geometrical distortions on wider settings needs a bit more time with PP.( Also, watch sample variations with this lens.) I am posting 100% crop - it will tell everything about this amazing lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No good for use with Nikon D800 The D800's high resolution showcases a lot of the flaws with this lens. - Crystal clear images from 28mm about 50mm great wide angle performance- Soft focus, noticeable grain, in general - the imagery was NOT sharp about 70mm and up- Distortion noticeable in many situations- High pitch autofocus sound is audible in all video recordings, however, using the manual focus for video felt easy and natural- 300mm focal length label is a lie, virtually no difference between 200mm and 300mm, this lens absolutely will NOT reach 300mm I really wanted to like this lens I need a nice wide angle zoom for the D800 unfortunately this lens stinks. Beware!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Lens!!! Purchased 9-3-10 and hasn't been off my D90 since it arrived. Fits my needs to a T. I am quite happy with resolution at 28mm and full 100% crop as well as the 300mm and 100% crop. Hand held shots are great in spite of my 78 year old arms. Weight at 2+ lbs is nothing compared to 4+ lbs. I use it for landscape, candid shots, extreme closeups of peoples, animals, flowers, birds, insects, trees, buildings, alleys, clouds and skies etc. I use it for grab shots at 28mm from a moving car and walking...no disappointments. It's an excellent carry it all the time lens. Love the lens creep lock and its location on the left side of the lens! Nikon (Nikkor) does it again!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great all around lens for Travel. I have the D7100 for about a year now and am really pleased with the camera in every aspect. I had the Sigma 18-250 and was pleased with the quality of pictures. I really wanted to upgrade to the D750 but not able at this time. So I went with NIKKOR lens and knowing the later I went with a full frame lens for future FX camera. I noticed the difference immediately and am very pleased. I travel to Europe a few times a year and on my last trip totally enjoyed the results along with the one lens aspect. To help with the weight of it all, I did remove the battery pack and that helped with carrying the camera/lens all day long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect FX Walk-around Lens I use this lens most of the time on my D800e. If I go out and don't want to carry a bag full of lenses, this is the one I go for. Images are sharp and with good contrast. Wide open at 28mm it is pretty fast; and at 300mm f/5.6 is acceptable in good light. Mated with the D800e, it is well balanced, but hefty; though I don't find it tiring. (I'm 60) The VR on the lens works very well and makes it much easier to get tack sharp images on the D800e. In my opinion, this is a must have lens for general purpose shooting and walking around. For special purposes, I switch glass, but the 28-300mm stays on the camera at least 80% of the time. Well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for when you want to carry only 1 I bought this lens when I sold my D7000 and 18-200 in order to go to fx: D750. Wanted to have an option when I wanted to carry just one lens for vacations, family outings, etc. Very happy with the product. It certainly has its sweet spots but performs MUCH better than the dx equivalent. In order to get the best out of the 18-200 lens you had to be at f8 and be somewhere in the 50-130 focal range. I have been very happy with all images at all f stops and focal ranges. Some of this might be attributed to the fact that the D750 is an AMAZING camera but regardless the finished products are fantastic. With rebates B&H offering it was an easy decision. Glad I made this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you can only pick one... Five stars, based on the notion that if I can only take a single FX lens with me, this is a fine solution. As a class, I dislike variable aperture zoom lenses. There are good reasons they cost less than their fixed aperture kin.The AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G is an exceptional case. The combination of excellent optics, image stabilization, tremendous zoom range make a compelling argument in favor of the product. It's relatively lightweight, and the 77mm filter size provides access to a broad range of front-end elements. Combination of these features make it a great only one in the bag lens, suitable for everything from interior shots to landscapes to outdoor moving targets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Compromise Not Worth Taking I hate compromising with my photos. I bought this with high hopes and after testing it, was completely unhappy with the results. I would never be able to pass the photos in my test shoot to any clients. It is just too soft. Yes, you can take care of the pin cushioning and barrel distortion in software, but there is little you can do about the lack of sharpness. However, if you need a single all around lens, this is probably it, although it is not what I am looking for in a lens. Perhaps a future version of this lens will have a redesign that will correct the softness issues. Slow auto focus, and inability to find the focus Thank you B&H for the no-hassle return policy.
