Covering an immense wide to tele range, the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR from Nikon is a versatile all-in-one zoom designed for FX-format cameras. Helping to maintain high image quality throughout the extensive 10.7x zoom range is an advanced optical design that uses aspherical and extra-low dispersion glass to suppress aberrations and distortion. A Super Integrated Coating is also used to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Also benefitting image quality is VR II image stabilization, which compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor is used to provide fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Reviews
All in one lens
I bought this lens to use when walking the trails and walking my dog, so far so good, I believe this is just what I wanted.
I Love This Lens
I got this lens as a replacement. I bought my first one (same lens) more than ten years ago when it was first released. During that time I've used it to get a huge variety of very high quality images. Subject matter has ranged from nature to landscapes to street to weddings and macro (plus plenty more). The large range of focal length has enabled me capture a lot of shots without needing to be scrambling to change lenses. Yes, it might be nice for it to be faster (e.g. f2 or better) but you can't have everything. I decided to replace the lens after getting a repair estimate from Nikon that was close to seventy five per cent of the replacement cost for a new one. If you are looking for a really great all purpose lens you can't beat this one.
Not what I expected
Purchased to upgrade an older telephoto and I'm sorry I did. I've seen what the lens is capable of, so I must have ended up with a bad copy. Just can't seem to get many shots in focus even on a tripod. Intended for use on a DX camera for some extra reach. Thinking perhaps not a lens for cropped sensors tried it on an D810 with no Improvement. I have an old 70 - 300 that was half the price and it outshines this lens easily.
miracle lens
This is my second one of these. It is my go-to lens and is on my D4S most of the time. It is the only lens I take on vacation. True, the f-stop is limited at longer lengths, but that's not a problem unless you're shooting small birds on a dark day. Too short for that, anyway. Although keep in mind that in DX mode, it can simulate 450mm!! It is as sharp as any of my Nikon pro lenses except the fantastically sharp 24-70 wide zoom.
An excellent go to lens.
It is clear that this lens covers a wide range of focal lengths. It also is very sharp throughout it's range and is fast enough throughout its range for most purposes. When I travel, this is my go-to lens. I may also bring my Nikkor 16-35mm zoom if I expect a need for ultra wide photos. This 28-300mm lens spends the most time on my camera, though. I have used this lens successfully for birding, family parties, for photographing contestants in horse shows, and for travel photos.
A great do everything lens.
Well, it doesn't do everything. but for a walk-about, it covers a lot of territory. It is sharp. It covers a lot of range ... wide angle for scenes ... to telephoto to catch details on a sculpture on a church column. When I go traveling, I bring this and a Nikon 16-35 wide zoom and I am prepared for almost any scene I wish to photograph.
Very Versatile.
Decent wide-angle to a nice zoom in one lens.
Great Travel Lens
Been traveling quite a lot lately. Some flights greatly limit the weight you can check and carry on. Wanted a single lens for travel. Remote travel brings risk of damage to lens. This lens meets all of my travel needs.
