Nikon 1996B overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens is a far-reaching telephoto zoom lens that features Vibration Reduction to reduce the effects of camera shake at longer focal lengths or with slower shutter speeds. The lens is designed for FX-format cameras and features an aperture range from f/4.5 to f/32. Lens construction includes three extra-low dispersion glass elements for control over aberrations and improved contrast and resolution. Additionally, this lens does feature an autofocus motor.

The lens also has a minimum focus distance of 7.5' and comes with a detachable, rotatable tripod collar for mounting when necessary. For smooth out-of-focus elements the lens uses 9 rounded aperture blades. Also, it features a 77mm filter thread.

Nikon D-type lenses transmit subject-to-camera distance information to the camera. The camera uses this distance information to refine its exposure calculations. AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000 & D5000 cameras.

Two Vibration Reduction modes are available one for both the viewfinder image and the image on film or sensor and a VR for the film or sensor only for power savings.
New optical design incorporates three ED glass elements for superior optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus (lock mechanism provided).
Focus range limiter for smooth focus operation.
Detachable tripod mounting foot provided.
Filter attachment does not rotate during focusing or zooming.

    Nikon 1996B reviews

AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 188.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Razor Sharp and Versatile Before purchasing this lens, I did what I see many also did prior and that was research and compare this lens to the Sigma 150-500 F/5-6.3 DG. After carefully weighing the pros and cons I chose the Nikon. I am very glad I did. This lens has proven to be ultra versatile, easy to use, and razor sharp. I mainly shoot landscapes and architecture and this lens has produced some of the best multi-shot panography, HDR, and super-resolution shots I have done to date. On tripod, I don't use the VR but I have had a chance to do some handheld wildlife shots and the VR does the job. Understand how to use the focus range limit switch and you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super-Zoom works great! I use this lens for landscape and wildlife photography, and it shines for both. It's pretty amazing how well I can shoot hand-held with the vibration reduction on, as it sits solidly right down in my hand. I use it with my D700, and can crank up the ISO if I need a faster shutter, without getting excessive noise. On my D7000 it of course becomes a 120-600, and really reaches out there. I did take the tripod foot off, since it gets in the way of my handling the zoom ring, and I haven't really needed the hood, so that cuts down on size and weight. It isn't the s type auto-focus, so it's not as silent and fast as lenses with that feature, but it does the job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Lens I think this lens can give off a different vibe than what it really can do. It is not made for action/sports because it doesn't focus fast enough. It is quite slow, but it doesn't mean that it is a terrible lens. In fact, it shoots great, sharp pictures. It is great for landscape, close head shots, slow moving sports, for example rock climbing, and animals that aren't running. This lens is a blast to have at a zoo. Lastly, with the VR feature, you can get sharp pictures, handheld, at 1/60 sec or maybe even less (I don't try to push it too much). Remember, don't buy it if you intend on using it for action. The 70-200mm f2.8 AFS VR would be a better option in the same price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Lens for the money I am rating this lens based on what it is. It is a D lens. It is not a G lens. Yes, all my G lenses are quieter and the auto focus is a little faster on them but the D lenses are what they are. It is the only lens I own that has an aperture range and is this slow. I bought it to go lay in the mud and sand with to get bird/wildlife pictures so I don't want to take any of my expensive lenses. I am very pleased with the shots I get from this lens. I use it on my D700's, D7000, and will use it on my D800 (IF I EVER GET IT!) I dont think you will be sorry you bought this lens as long as you accept it for what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 80-400mm Nikon - The best buy! I know I had to spend a lot of money for a something not used everyday; so I wanted to make sure that I buy the right product. Being an amateur photographer loving nature and birds I opted for the 80-400mm zoom to complement my 18-200mm on my D90. At first I wasn't sure but seeing the results... what a magnificent buy!! I can use it out the hip and get excellent results, thanks to the VR function. Zoom is quick if you use single point which you want when you only want to focus on the subject, the other zoom is also quick for wider shots! I will recommend this product to anyone wanting a good zoom that is easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally got the right lens! I love this lens! After trying other lenses for less money, I finally broke down and bought this lens after reading other reviews. It is just what I have wanted for quite some time, but was not willing to spend the money for it. It is easy to hand hold after removing the collar ring, and images are nice and sharp. When doing bird photography, I put the ring back on, and use it on my tripod with a gimbal tripod head, and it performs great. I like the range, and the performance. It is a little slow focusing, but the results if you don't miss the shot won't disappoint you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp Lens I've been shooting sports for 2 weeks with this lens and I'm very impressed with its sharpness. Reviews have varied regarding sharpness, and while I may not have the most discerning eye, for practical purposes, this lens is excellent. Auto-focusing is good- it's never going to be perfect, but shooting with the D3S I've had wonderful results. The only significant negative is that the zoom ring is very tight- a lens of this size/weight requires skillful maneuvering and the force needed to zoom in and out will slow you down and move your composition. I wish the fix was as easy as a simple spritz of WD-40...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Epected I had read many reviews of this lens and had determined that for my experience level and my fiscal constraints this lens would certainly enhance my photographic experience. Most of the reviewers commented on the speed or lack thereof of this lens. I found that the speed exceeded my expectations gained from the reviews. Many reviewers also commented on the amount of time to focus as well as the hunting. I have found that it focuses faster than my previous lens and with less hunting. While the lens is undoubtedly not professional quality where speed and focus time are concerned, it certainly is more than capable of capturing dynamic images under proper conditions. I am using the lens for nature photography and have been impressed with my ability to get quality shots while not disturbing my subject matter which more often than not is a small bird.
