Nikon 2139B overview

  • 1Description

Nikon's AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops (8 times) faster. The lens offers a natural viewfinder image even during VR operation and also detects automatically when the photographer pans. It is ideal for candid, portrait, sports photography and more.

It is fully compatible with all Nikon SLR models that include a built-in aperture control Command Dial. It will also operate using Shutter Priority and Program Mode operation in many Nikon models that do not have a built-in aperture control.

Included camera models:

  • D2, D2, D3 Series*
  • F6, F5, F100, F80-Series/N80-Series*

Vibration Reduction (VR) minimizes image blur caused by camera shake (cancelable). Two available VR modes :
Two vibration reduction modes are available: (1) the NORMAL mode for reducing camera shake, and (2) the ACTIVE mode for reducing camera shake when taking pictures from a moving vehicle.

    The following cameras are useable:
    35mm SLR Cameras:
  • F6, F5, F100, F80-Series/N80-Series, F75-Series/N75-Series, F65-Series/N65-Series Digital SLR Cameras:
  • D1, D2, D3 series

  • When using the lens with cameras other than those listed above, set the vibration reduction mode switch to OFF to cancel the vibration reduction mode.
With the Pronea 600i/6i camera, in particular, battery power may become depleted quickly if this switch is left ON.
With this lens, you can take pictures at shutter speeds approx. 3 stops slower than you ordinarily could without using a VR lens, expanding the range of usable shutter speed options and making telephoto shooting much easier without a tripod.
New G-design incorporates distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes.
New G-design enables apertures to be selected from select Nikon AF SLR camera bodies.
Optical design incorporates five ED glass elements for superior optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus (Lock mechanism provided).
Resistance to water drops equivalent to those of telephoto AF-S lenses.
New cosmetic design identical to current AF-S Nikkor lenses

    Nikon 2139B reviews

    AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 397.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Stunning on DX format If you are using a DX based sensor camera then just buy it, it is an amazing lens. This is my second purchase having sold the first to buy a 18-200 for travelling... This was a big mistake, the 18-200 is a good alrounder lens but the lack of sharpness beyond 100mm has left me with some shots that simply could have been better. Yes it is heavy and for travelling is a pain as it adds to an already overloaded bag BUT it is well worth it when you see the results. On film the lens is not that sharp and has darkened corners at most settings, I guess on a D3 it may have some issues, but on DX it is stunning...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning Images, No regrets at all This is one of Nikon's best lenses I have ever owned. I have handled, used and owned many Nikkors over the years. Simply put, I think this lens is one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has produced and the bokeh is out of this world, it's buttery soft and creamy. I will use this lens for sports, portraiture, weddings and travel. It's quite a deal when you consider how many lenses this one lens can replace. The VR feature is a plus but consider as you can hand hold this lens with slower shutter speeds your subject will also have to remain fairly static. The only regret I have is that I didn't buy it sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forget the rest, buy the best I needed a zoom in the 70 to 200 range with a large apeture for weddings and other sketchy light level events. After doing tons or research and playing with some other brands I took the plunge and bought the Nikon. Are the optics better than the others? Yes, Is the vibration reduction option worth the extra cash? Absolutely. It's big, it's heavy, it's expensive, but it's worth every penny. Nothing else on the market allows you to shoot handheld at lower shutter speeds than this and that is very important for weddings and indoor sports. You just will not find anything out there that performs like this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Incredible Product! Nikon produced a great product. I used this recently on a trip to Florida and got some stunning photos of wildlife and park exhibits. The lens is crystal clear, sharp, and easy to use. It makes you want to go out and take photos. The only two downsides of this lens are the cost of it and the weight of it. After lugging it around all day, I felt like my neck was ready to snap. It's really a heavy lens combined with a metal Nikon body. However, even with the weight and cost of the lens, I don't regret getting it. I would have given this product 5 stars if it weren't so expensive or heavy. Otherwise, it's tops in my book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my needs I bought this lens to make pictures of my kids playing indoor sports. I tried less expensive options, a 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4; but could not capture the facial expressions I was looking for. Finally a good friend said, you know you want it, and you need it, so you might as well make the investment. She was right. I saved $700 by purchasing the VRI instead of the new VRII. I am using a D5000. My research led me to believe I would be plenty happy with this lens and I am! This lens is heavy enough that I usually shoot on a monopod in the gym. After the first weekend of shooting volleyball I had two of my photos published in the local paper. My investment certainly paid off!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must-have lens! I use the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 AFS VR lens for large animal photography and moderate landscapes and citi-scapes (those that do not warrant a wide-angle lens. This lens is an engineering work of art. Focusing is smooth, fast, and quiet. Image stabilization is amazing. I can hand-hold and get images that are sharp even when blown up to 17x22. As a 2.8 lens, it is large, but being able to make use of 2.8 for low light situations is fabulous. The included tripod collar and lens hood make it a pleasure to work with.Don't think twice about getting this lens. It clearly beats any lens in this focal length category. Go into debt for it. You'll be glad you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! Although I think I had unrealistic expectations this is still a great lens. VERY sharp!! I just think I was expecting too much low light capability from the 2.8. But absolutely no regrets with the purchase. Now I have my 50 f/1.4, a 17-55 f/2.8, my 18-200 VR (for casual walk-around with the grand kids) and now the 70-200. 2 days after I received the lens I went to a wedding a took some reception shots. GREAT shots and tack sharp. The only drawback would be the number of comments you'll receive about a) the size and b) being able to see nose hairs on people 6 miles away (which you obviously can't. This is only a 200 mm lens.) Again, no regrets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from in an only word: fantastic Im Italian, sorry for my English. I use above all the objective to photograph competitions of horses. I need fast times of releases and therefore of a bright lens, above all for the competitions in the covered arenas. The lens from a feeling of sturdiness and high quality, confirmed to the first use. It doesn't betray the expectations. All this however it behaves an important price, and of the notable dimensions for a tourist use
