Nikon 2146B overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G IF ED Lens offers a significant advancement for professional telephoto photography, and is fully compatible with both 35mm and Digital SLR cameras.

The lens features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops (8 times) faster. The lens offers a natural viewfinder image even during VR operation and also detects automatically when the photographer pans.

In addition, the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) feature provides swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. And the lens can be switched quickly from AF to manual focus. Four buttons in front of the lens' focus ring let the photographer easily select from the [AF-L], [MEMORY RECALL], and [AF-ON] functions. The Focus Preset function allows a distance to be set to which the focus mechanism will instantly and automatically return to.

The ideal zoom-telephoto lens for the discerning professional telephoto photographer.

VR function is only compatible with Nikon's F5, F100, N80, N65, D70, D100 & D1-series (or later) cameras.
AF-S lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will autofocus ONLY with the following cameras- N65, N70/F70, N80/F80, N90s/F90x, F4, F4s, F5, F100, D100, D1 & D1x (or any newer models).
"G" type lenses are not fully compatible with the F4, N90-series, N70, N8008-series and N6006 (or older model) cameras, only programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure mode can be used.

Vibration Reduction (VR) minimizes image blur caused by camera shake (cancelable). Two available VR modes :
  • Normal mode covers for regular hand shake with support for panning as well as tracking shots. For example, when panning (horizontally) while tracking a moving subject, vibration reduction suppresses only vertical hand shake.
  • Active mode is available to suppress vibration when shooting while on a moving vehicle.
  • This lens is a combination of four fixed focal length super-telephoto lenses into a single compact super-telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor lens.
New optical design incorporates four ED glass elements for superior optical performance throughout the entire zoom range
Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus (Lock mechanism provided)
Lens mount fitted with rubber ring that is resistant to dust and drops of water
    Detachable tripod mounting foot provided
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and better body balance
Nine-blade rounded diaphragms make out-of focus elements look more natural

    Nikon 2146B reviews

    AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G IF ED Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply superb I have been using this lens for more than 3 months now and it has been performing flawlessly. It has been giving crystal clear shots even in poor light. It's a great lens for wildlife photography. Only con is its very heavy.I am not a big guy so just hand holding without any support is almost impossible. But with its VR function I could get great shots with just a little support like resting my elbow on the window sill of a landrover. 200-400 zoom gives great flexibility in composing shots without compromising on quality, which is not possible with fixed focal length lenses. Being f/4 it may not be as fast as f/2.8 VR 300mm but it's fast enough for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp I photograph Aussie Rules Football - fields are huge! - 165m long and 135 m wide, hence the need for a TC - I use a 1.4TC which takes the lens to f5.6. I was deciding between a 400 f2.8 or this lens, but as I only carry one camera body, the zoom range provides good flexibility and a wider range of the field that can be covered. Effectively it's a 835mm f5.6 lens when used with the 1.4TC and a D300 body! Most of the photogrpahy is done in daylight, so even at 200 ISO, I easily get shutter speeds of 1/2000s @f5.6 Focus is fast, good bokeh, pictures are sharp Too heavy to hand hold (even for just a few shots) - I use a monopod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SWEET This lens is razor sharp and fast! I'm using it for baseball and it's perfect for infield and close outfield when shooting from the 1st or 3rd base lines. Shooting the pitcher from behind home plate is beautiful. It is large (my wife nick named it Hubble)and a bit heavy so I recommend a good monopod. I hand held a test shot of my cat at 1/60 f4 (with the VR on) and I could count the whiskers. The case that comes with it is very nice and is as large as my very large camera bag! This is my new favorite lens. Aside from the great pictures you'll get, you'll also command a lot of attention from all who see you with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect airshow lens Though this lens starts with F 4.0, the zoom range makes it very useful in airshow arena where fast jets demand a quick respond autofocus. The AF is deadon, and with D300 I can shoot 8 fps. The weight is reasonable and capable of hand holding, the only confusion is when to use VR normal vs Active. The Nikon rep I talk to adviced me to leave VR on normal unless I am riding in roller coaster or helicopter, that's where Active mode comes in. I will suggest to achieve quick aim at 400mm setting to do the following: attach the hood with the tightening screw dead center over the centerline of the lens, use that with the camera' flash mount like a rifle sight, all you have to do is to move your eye about one inch into the viewfinder and you nail the shot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding wildlife lens I use this with a D3, often handheld for opportunistic shots of birds (in flight) and mammals. Color contrast, sharpness and freedom from distortion are excellent throughout range. The combination of large aperture and the D3's low noise/high ISO sensor, allows very fast shutter speeds. Combined with excellent VR, this finally make it possible to get super-sharp hand held images at 400mm. An outstanding lens, highly recommended for wildlife photography. The combined weight of this exceptional lens plus the D3, put it near the upper limit for reasonable hand-held use, but it is manageable and the effort pays off big time. Matching it with a TC-14EII proved disappointing for handheld, satisfactory for tripod use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Ultimate Wildlife lens? I have used the 200-400 VR for close to 2 years now in all types of conditions, hot, cold, dry, dusty, humid etc to date performance has been faultless and the results make me look better than I know I am.The main advantage is that it is one of the few top quality 400mm lenses that can be handheld for grab shots of things like birds in flight. Also works very well with the Nikon TC 1.4x and 1.7x. These combinations make this a wonderfully versatile package. Problems Encountered: VR switch can be inadvertantly pushed to off position if on a bean bag. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: 200 f/2.8+TCS Items I Recommend: Gimbal type head like manfrotto/Bogen 393, wimberly etc

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind Blowing All Purpose Zoom. I was and still am to some extent a Canon fan-boy, but my agency had Nikon equipment so I bought a D3s and the 200-400. I was blown away by both and am now arguing with my friends over how much better they are than their closest Canon equivalents. I have been shooting wildlife professionally for ten plus years and this lens is by far the best I have ever used. I like the Canon 500 f/4 and 300 f/2.8 but got really tired of backing up to get compositions including the environment. With the 200-400 you have so much to play with, if I am too close I can zoom out without having to move. It is also one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used and stands up to even the tack Canon 300 f/2.8. All in all one of the most intuitive lenses I have had my hands on, it just works and I don't think I could live without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, it is that good ! I have used this lens for only 30-days but...!Attached to the D3 this is a large 12-pound arm full. I am 70-years of age and size and weight matter to me. I brace on whatsoever I can and rarely use a tripod. I love the out-of-doors and have done wildlife as a hobby for 50-years. This heavy lens is worth hauling around all day because I know, if the shot is there, the D3 and this lens are capable. I have used many high-end cameras and many big-glass lens over the years, but this combination surpasses them all.
