Nikon 2149B overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm provides a wide-angle to mid-telephoto zoom range in the DX Nikkor series. Designed specifically for use with Nikon digital cameras that feature the smaller DX size chip, this lens features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and Nikon's exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor).

The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur Nikon D-SLR users who demand both the advantages of high optical performance and ultra-wideangle focal range.

This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum. Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms is 27-105mm.

Note: DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with 35mm, digital "full-frame" FX, or APS SLR cameras

Fast, ultra-wideangle to telephoto zoom lens
Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration, provide higher resolution and superior contrast
One aspherical lens element minimizes distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
High-grade Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color reproduction and minimizes ghost and flare
SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for swift autofocusing with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation
The rounded diaphragm opening (7 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural
M/A mode allows rapid switching between autofocus and manual even during AF servo operation, with virtually no time lag
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance

Nikon 2149B reviews

18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable kit lens with excellent build qu I got this lens years ago as a kit lens for my D70. I have continued to use it with a D80 and D300. Compared with the newer kit lenses such as the 18-55; 18-105, 18-135, the build quality was significantly better than the others. I work in camera repairs, and we see the plastic Nikkors all the time. The glass seems great, but the plastic and build quality does not compare well with the 18-70 and the new 16-85 Vr lenses. I did need to have the encoder repaired, but the lens is fine now. Images consistently sharp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I was surprised by this lens We use this lens for weddings, portraits, and landscapes. My wife dropped it on asphault at a wedding shoot and shattered the UV filter but it did not hurt the lens. After purchasing the 24-70 and the 70-200 we put this one on the shelf. Recently I was picking out wedding shots to update our website and was surprised the metadata listed this lens used on the majority of those we picked as the best shots...even over the much more expensive Nikkors. It is a much better lens than the price would lead you to believe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens, Very Useful! I purchased my Nikon 18-70 from B&H. My copy is extremely sharp across all focal lengths and apertures. I think the price is right for the lens. It's very well made, focuses fast, colors are accurate, images are tack sharp, and the focal length range is very useful. Sure, I would love to have the 18-200VR lens, but since they're practically impossible to get, I went for the 18-70. I have not been disappointed in the least. It's a great lens! Problems Encountered: None. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Nikon D200, Nikon 50mm F1.4 Items I Recommend: SB-600 or SB800 Flash as the lens is not fast enough for indoor natural light

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Underwater Use I use this lens primarily underwater with my D200 and a Seaand Sea housing and ports. Pleasantly surprised with theresults. Having the flexibility to go from 18MM to 70MM wasreally nice. The results at 18MM were absolutely amazing. Clear crisp shots that rivaled the wide angle shots I tookwith a 16MM fisheye lens. The results at 70MM were notquite as good. This lens is clearly not meant for macrowork. I will go with a 60MM in the future to get thecrispness and clarity I'm looking for. With that said, theflexibility of the zoom outweigh the negatives at 70MM. Expertise: Advanced amature Problems Encountered: Focus ring slipped off a few times. This was more a usererror than anything. Note to self, make sure the focus ringis on tight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of those must have lenses. I picked up this lens on the recommendation of a Pro I know as a walk around lens. I was looking for a high quality lens with great IQ for general use. This lens is very sharp, just as sharp or sharper than the 50mm 1.8D AF from what I have seen. It balances well with my D90 and with the 70-300mm VR and 50mm 1.8D I have most everything covered. There is some barrel distortion at 18mm and light fall off that is noticeable on some backgrounds. I just shoot at f8 or better and the falloff disappears completely. The barrel distortion is fixable in PS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens i decided to purchase this lens instead of getting a high school ring, and i think that it has been a great choice. i bought this lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens that came with my d80 because i got tired of its feel (really cheap). im one of the weird ones that prefers a heavy lens even on long hikes and trips. anyways it is a great lens, i love the manual override because AF isn't always perfect. i also love the fact that it has the lens hood attachment which the 18-55 didn't and the fact that it is an internal focus lens which is alot easier to use certain filters with and i think it is alot safer for the lens to not have external moving parts. if the body of this lens is made of plastic, nikon did a great job at hiding that. it is a hefty lens and for a great price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular! I use this lens for everything from portraits to landscapes. It's sharp as a tack at virtually all settings...with wonderful contrast. Color resolution is outstanding. This lens and my Nikon D90 make an unbeatable pair.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not that great I've had this lens for a year and continue to find myself disappointed in it. The autofocus has a mind of its own and sometimes doesnt even bother to focus. You will sometimes have to turn the camera off and then back on to get it to pay attention and start focusing again. Every now and then in large group shots it will be in focus, only to find the files slightly soft once I get them in the computer. Other than that, it's a great general purpose lens but I wouldn't use it for anything that is very important where sharpness is a factor. No, it's not me either. On the plus side, it's a very quiet lens and has a nice wide range. Expertise: Pro Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Nikon 24-85 2.8, 35-105 and many others
