Nikon 26108B overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon Coolpix S550 Digital Camera packs high performance and advanced functions into an ultra-compact body. The S550 boasts 10 effective megapixels of sharp resolution, and a 5x Zoom-NIKKOR lens with Electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization, along with a Sensitivity equivalent to ISO 2000 to ensure that your photos will always look great - regardless of lighting conditions or subject movement. And all of these features are mediated by Nikon's innovative EXPEED image processing system which provides enhanced noise reduction and an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio.

The Nikon S550 incorporates Nikon's user-friendly imaging innovations known as Nikon In-Camera Innovations. These include In-Camera Red-Eye Fix which automatically detects and corrects red eye, a common condition that occurs in flash photography, D-Lighting which compensates for excessive backlight or insufficient flash in images, and Face Priority AF which automatically finds and focuses on up to 12 people's faces within one frame, ensuring clear, crisp portraits. Furthermore, the S550 includes Nikon's Coolpix Software Suite for organizing, editing and sharing your photos.

Two of the latest features to be incorporated into the Nikon S550, are the Smile Mode and the Blink Warning - both of these features help photographers to get the best possible portraits or group shots. The Smile Mode automatically fires the shutter when the selected person smiles and the Blink Warning displays a warning message if the selected subject has blinked when the shot was taken. The Coolpix S550 also provides innovative and helpful scene modes so you are assured that you will be able to select the perfect setting for a variety of shooting situations.

The Coolpix S550 has a bright, high resolution 2.5-inch LCD monitor with an anti-reflective coating and a wide viewing angle, thereby easing the composition and viewing of photos even in direct sunlight. The quality-crafted aluminum body has a streamlined profile and a slim, ergonomic design that style-conscious photographers will love. The S550 is compatible with SDHC cards and utilizes the ultra-compact EN-EL11 rechargeable Li-ion battery so you'll have plenty of power for a day of picture taking.

10.0 Megapixel Resolution
With 10.0 million pixels of image information, the Nikon Coolpix S550 can produce stunning, photo quality prints up to 30 x 40" without any loss of image quality. The camera also records images in the 16:9 wide format aspect ratio so your images are well proportioned to be viewed on an HD Video Display.
5x Zoom-NIKKOR Lens
The 5x Zoom-NIKKOR lens of the Coolpix S550 employing four aspherical elements and delivering telephoto reach up to 180mm (35mm equivalent) for exceptional image quality with greater creative freedom. The high quality NIKKOR optics also allows macro shooting from as close as 4" (10cm) to your subject.
Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
The Coolpix S550 incorporates an Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) system which functions by taking data from a built-in angular velocity sensor, then applies in-camera image processing to turn blurred images into beautifully sharp results.
Slim, Stylish, All-Metal Design
With a slim, sophisticated design this ultra-compact digital camera easily slips right into your shirt pocket or purse, and its good looks are complemented by incredible durability due to the all-metal casing.
Movie and Voice Recording
Shoot Broadcast quality QuickTime movies with sound with VGA resolution at 30 frames per second at a length that is only limited by the available space on the internal memory or your SD memory card.
Light Sensitivity up to ISO 2000
High light sensitivity up to ISO 2000 allows you to tackle scenes and situations that many compact cameras cannot, with the power to capture fast-moving objects with outstanding clarity and gives you great exposures in lower light.
16 Scene Modes
The Coolpix S550 incorporates 16 scene modes that cover some of the more common difficult shooting situations to maximize the image quality. The scene modes automatically adjust focus, exposure, white balance and other settings to make getting a good exposure easy.
Smile Mode and Blink Warning
The combination of the Smile Mode and a Blink Warning helps to faithfully record precious smiles in the brief instants when they appear. The Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when the selected subject smiles, helping to ensure that there are smiles on the faces of loved ones, plus a smile indicator, activated via Portrait Mode, displays a gauge that changes when a smile is detected. The innovative Blink Warning alerts you when a subject has blinked during the photo, so you can immediately retake the shot, while your subject or subjects are still in position.
Nikon In-Camera Innovations
The Coolpix S550 features a selection of three innovative functions that provide the ability to actually improve the quality of images within the camera - these include Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix and D-Lighting.

  • In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
This Feature automatically fixes most instances of red-eye - right in the camera. Red-eye is commonly caused by the use of a built-in flash on a compact camera.
  • Improved Face-Priority AF
The Nikon Face-Priority AF system automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame for crisp, sharp portraits - and now it focuses on faces faster than ever. The feature can find and focus on up to 12 faces to ensure superb group portraits.
  • Nikon D-Lighting
The Nikon D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by automatically creating a copy of the image, then brightening the dark areas in the picture, while the well-exposed areas are left completely untouched.
Built-in and Expandable Memory
The camera includes 50MB of built-in memory so you can begin taking shots immediately without having to purchase a memory card, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards.
Bright 2.5-inch LCD Display
The Coolpix S550 is equipped with a bright 2.5" LCD that is great for viewing images anywhere, anytime; plus the anti-reflection coating and an impressive 170 degree wide viewing angle, makes it easy to see the screen from any angle, even under bright lighting conditions.
Auto Image Rotation
The Auto Image Rotation feature detects pictures that have been taken with the camera held vertically and automatically rotates the image for in-camera LCD playback.
Print Directly or Show Pictures on a TV
You can send images directly to print, without the need of a PC, when using PictBridge and USB Direct Print compatible printers, or connect directly to your TV for family slide shows and presentations.

Nikon 26108B reviews

Coolpix S550 Digital Camera (Graphite Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera I wanted a camera that was small, light, automatic and took good pictures. So far, so good. I also wanted more of a zoom than you find on most point and shoots, but I have not had the opportunity to use this camera's 5x zoom yet. The only down side so far is sometimes the camera thinks too much. In automatic mode it picks where the focus should be regardless as to how you move or reposition it, or where you try to get it to focus. I am happy with the pictures I have taken so far, and with the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Camera I bought this camera for my mother after using my own since March. With a 5x optical zoom ( most others are 3x) and 10 megapixels its the perfect take anywhere camera. I have a Nikon D200, but sometimes a small point and shoot is more fitting and this is a great one. The built in scene programs are convenient - even for a novice like my mom. The rechargable battery is nice and lasts a long while, but I think a second battery is a wise move. All-in-all its a great camera for the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice camera for casual picture taking The S550 was purchased as a have with me all the time camera. I have a friend that has a Canon Sureshot with her at all times and has taken some excellent photos. I thought to give Nikon a try. What is good is the size. Battery life is surprising considering the size of the battery. It takes several charge discharge cycles to realize its full potential. It has to be one of the smallest quality cameras around. I like the fact that the LCD is large and clearly visible in daylight. Photos shot with it are very good, not excellent but very good. As a digital SLR user one has to remember the tiny lens cannot compare to a larger camera. Now for the bad. I was somewhat mislead by some of the stated features. Perhaps my command of the English language isn't that good. There is a fair amount of barrel distortion that can be corrected in camera. The vibration mode is usable as is the D lighting feature although it does bring up noise in the photo. I was excited by the 5 X optical zoom but became VERY disappointed by how soft the image becomes as one zooms out. The digital zoom as is always, totally useless and I personally turn it off. Again, the softness of the zoom is a major disappointment. Focus is not great. The camera cannot focus in my Siamese cat under any lighting condition! I guess the market is for young on the go cool type people which I will admit I am not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It, Love It, Love It!! This is my fun camera. I use it to take quick pictures of my grandkids, as well as for travel. Love the zoom. Ive been able to capture great shots at a distance. This camera is easy to use, even for the technically challenged. I had it figured out immediately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This little guy works for me I'm mostly a landscape photographer but can't carry my D-SLR every time I walk out the door. The S550 gives me the casual freedom I was looking for. Although it's hardly fair to compare it with more sophisticated digital cameras, this little guy isn't bad. I've never owned a point-and-shoot until I purchased this one, but I'm impressed with its settings. I've pushed it way beyond its rudimentary limits and, so far, I've been satisfied with the results. And if you're a runner, hiker, or bicyclist, this lightweight camera won't distract from your freedom of movement. I carry it with me everywhere. My only complaint is that the buttons are way too small and, as a consequence, I sometimes have trouble turning it on and off.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for Canon people... I am a Canon lifer and for some strange reason decided to depart from my long line of Powershots for my recent point and shoot purchase. This Nikon is a little sluggish and the pictures are often very grainy, even when the settings are fiddled with. Granted I just got it and have to get used to the shooting modes, but it doesn't seem to be taking very crisp photos, despite its 10 megapixels. I have had to edit all the pictures I take to try and make them pretty. Also, I am a big fan of no-flash pictures, and this camera just doesn't give the same oomph. It's fine for someone using auto settings and taking flash 13 year old cousin has one and loves it. For all past Canon-ites, though, stick with what you know.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Cool It is just a fun camera to have along. I have Digital SLR cameras and this just brings the spontaneous image making back. No faults found. Love it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT CAMERA!!! Before I bought this camera I read some reviews that said that many of the pictures were blurred and indoor photos usually came out dark, however, I have not found any of these issues with this camera. I am very pleased with this camera and the quality of the pictures it produces. The battery also lasts longer than I expected. I would definately recommend it to everyone!
