    Nikon 4806B reviews

SB-400 Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 548.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would recommend this flash I use the SB400 as an alternative to the built in flash on my D90. I am not a pro, I am an avid amateur photographer. The SB400 is light, compact and reasonably powerful. It does not make the D90 top-heavy. All the pictures I have taken with it have been properly exposed without the red-eye and harshness that one gets with the built-in flash. The bounce feature works nicely. It is small and neat and comes in a nice zippered pouch. It does not swivel like its bigger brothers, but the SC 28 coiled cord allows the use of the flash off-camera. For the price it is a little treasure. I'd recommend it as a useful addition to carry in your amateur camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performer on Nikon D5100 I wanted to get a more powerful flash that was capable of adjusting the angle so I could bounce it off the ceiling. I typically like to buy things that are more advanced because I don't want to feel limited, so I was looking at the Nikon SB-700, then started reading reviews on the SB-400. I'm just a beginner with a Nikon D5100 and after reading the reviews, I felt the SB-400 would be money wisely spent. I'm so glad I got this over the SB-700. Maybe one day, but as of now the SB-400 is more than enough for me. It adjusts easily, seems to last a while on the rechargeable batteries I got with it, and I also really like the physical size of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performed to expectations Coming from a manual flash with more power, I am still veryhappy with this little guy. Even though less powerful, I getfar more consistent exposure and that is what it is allabout, right! Very good value for the money (was only about$30 more than my manual flash). Only thing I wish it had wasa swivel to go with the bounce and a detachable diffuser soI could add color sheets, but those are fairly minor detailsand can be done with the other flash if I absolutely have touse them. Expertise: Advanced Am./Semi-pro Problems Encountered: Only the lack of swivel and someplace to put my colors. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Quantaray QBSZ-370

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Travel Flash The SB400 flash unit, which uses 2 AA batteries, is a great companion when you need to travel light. The unit also places the flash a little higher than the camera's internal flash, allowing for increased functionality when using some larger lenses (less chance of a shadow on the photo when shooting at wide angles). The flash also allows for bounce use, which, of course, the camera flash does not. Included is a nice carrying case to protect the unit when not in use. It is light, well made, and simple to use. There are no features like the SB800 but that's not what you buy a unit like this for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice little 'gun for average needs. I'm an advanced amateur and make no bones about it. I shoot with a Nikon D300s and just wanted a nice, compact, lightweight flash for fill-in needs when the on-board flash wasn't enough. The SB400 fills the bill well. It has just a tad more power than the on-board flash, it recycles quickly (and doesn't use the camera's battery) and it allows a measure of bounce capability. It's not particularly powerful so it won't reach out and touch someone across a room but that's perfectly fine for me. Honestly, I do little that needs much more capability and have no particular focus on being a pro or even semi-pro, so the SB400 is just fine for my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and Pocket-Friendly For all the flash that I need (fill and some occasional bounce), this does the job wonderfully. It has enough power to illuminate subjects at reasonable ranges when I shoot with my 50/1.4G on a D7000. Initially skeptical, I quickly realized that this flash unit allows me to shoot flash shots MUCH faster than attempting to use the in-camera pop-up flash. Additionally, the quality of the flash is MUCH nicer. I recommend purchasing an SC-29 cord with it to overcome this flash unit's inability to swivel. All in all, though, if you need some extra flash power and don't want to spend the big bucks, then this is a highly-recommended flash unit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mighty Tiny I bought this for my daughter, who needed something better than her built in flash, but who could not tolerate the weight of an SB-600 (as she put it, like a can of beans sitting on my camera ) . Of course I had to try it out. I rigged a reflector (see below) which enabled plenty of neutral and nicely diffuse light. Perfect for those who want to get their flash further above their camera (or off with optional cord), want more power than the camera's built in flash, and want it in a package of barely noticeable size and weight. It has an extremely high utility to tiny and cuteness ratio. Too bad it can't be used as a remote in the CLS system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SB-400 Nikon Speedlight review ...I use the product for indoor portrait, group shots and outdoors for fill in light. My on-camera flash just did not work as needed.Basically, the best things about this speedlight is its size. It is small enough to fit in my small camera bag with the camera body with one lens attached and a second lens. I also like that it has a much longer range than my on camera flash. What I do not like, but new this when I made the purchase, is that the flash head does not rotate. So if I shooting a portrait frame the flash will not bounce off the ceiling. So, I will just have to work on some get-arounds for this.Overall, with the budget I had, this seems to be a very smart purchase for me....
