Sony 35mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

Get a "normal" perspective and shoot a variety of subjects with your APS-C format A-mount camera by picking up the DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM Lens from Sony, which provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length. It offers a fast f/1.8 aperture for selective focus techniques and working in dim light. Also, it uses a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) for fast, quiet focusing down to the minimum focus distance of 9". Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm that ensures smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C format cameras, this 35mm lens will provide a normal 52.5mm equivalent focal length that is well suited to general photography.
A fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 allows users to work in less-than-ideal lighting conditions and create images with a shallow depth of field.
By incorporating a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) unit into the lens itself to drive the focusing element group, this lens is able to deliver smoother, quieter, and faster performance than coupled systems. Also, it offers a minimum focus distance of 9".
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 35mm f/1.8 reviews

DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 128.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Primes Are The Best Luxurious telephoto lenses like the 24-70 Zeiss are hard to justify when compared to this prime and others that Sony makes. For starters, they are bulkier. They are priced significantly higher then 3 primes. Their aperture does not drop as low, giving you a full stop and a half of light. Finally, the image quality is on par. Bokeh might be a little nicer in some of the expensive telephotos, but the bokeh in most primes are nice and creamy as well. The only advantage to an expensive telephoto is their ability to zoom. However, having a prime forces you to compose which, in my opinion, helps create a better photographer. This lens is awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens! This lens is perfect for portrait and people work. It is just as sharp and fast as the Sony 50mm f/1.8, but is wider. That makes it even more versatile for indoor work. Its minimum focus distance is also really great. The first thing that I used it for was a client's family portrait shoot. The results were great. Fantastic color. Sharp as a tack. Excellent bokeh. I also own the amazing 50mm f/1.8. I love that lens, but this one may soon become my default always-on-the-camera lens. And the price... I'm amazed that you can get such a great lens at such a low price. Prime lenses are always a good choice, and this might be the primary prime for your kit bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from smart buy Bought these lens for Nex-C3. Focusing in auto is very slow on LA-EA1, 5-7 seconds, but in manual mode 2-3 seconds only, miss focusing each 1 out of 3 times, but in manual no mistakes. Focusing ring is not convenient for manual use because it's narrow, but moving smooth. Lens light & small, very sharp at F4-F4.5 comparing with standard NEX kit 18-55s, colours more vivid. Lens are small & fit perfect to C3 body, not heavy not bulky. Plastic & production quality is fine for $. Bought to use for night streets snapshots mainly, however portraits are amazing too - much better than standard zoom lens. Now, use my C3 mainly in Aperture mode, with manual focusing that contributes the lack of controls on C3 and gives 'DSLR like' quality pics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must have for any Sony APS-C Shooter I used to shoot with Nikon and used the excellent 35mm 1.8 AFS on my former D90 body with great results. Now shooting the A77, I was hoping to have the same results with their 35mm SAM. For the most part, I'm not disappointed. Great little lens with few flaws. Pros : Sharp from wide open and gets extremely sharp stopped down a bit. minimal distortion. Easy-to-correct CA. Autofocus fairly accurate and sure. Also, it focuses pretty closely for this type of lens, which is really nice. Cons: Plastic construction throughout. SAM motors doesn't engage focus peaking when toggling AF/MF on my A77 like a screw-drive or SSM lens does -- sorta makes you wonder what the heck it's purpose is (maybe future motor-less bodies?) Overall, great buy, very lightweight lens, sharp as a tack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Lens This is a very good lens for the money. After reading the other reviews I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been wanting a fast lens but prices were pretty high; then I saw this one. The auto focus is fast and accurate. The bokeh is great. It's very light since it is plastic. If you are on a budget, as I am, this lens is for you. The glass is tremendous. However, due to its plastic construction, I'm not sure how it will hold up in the long run. I'm not hard on my lenses anyway, so it should last me for quite some time. Buy it, you'll like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp It has been a couple of weeks since I got it and this thing has never left my camera. Lightweight, very sharp and excelent colors. Before I bought this lens I went thru my photos and 95% of them were actually 24mm focal length so 50mm would have been too long for my style. Got 35mm adjusted my style by taking 2 steps back and it is perfect for me. Very good for walk around photography. Indoors shots are good as well. Price is great,.I have no problem with plastic mount at all, just wish it has SSM focus motor, but for the price I'll take SAM.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Photo Quality! I use this lens mostly as a walk around lens,it also works great for portraits when you don't want to just have a photo of just a persons head, I dunno why everyone says it feels cheap, to me it feels built exactly the same as the standard 18-55mm kit lens you would usually get with your camera, don't expect it to be built like a carl zeiss or sony g lens, remember your only spending about 200 dollars for this and the picture quality you get for that price is great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Sharp Prime at a Great Price What it lacks in build quality, it makes up in photo quality. Images are sharp and colors are vibrant. Chromatic aberrations can appear from time to time in bright photos, but images are generally fantastic. Bokeh is fantastic, but the lens is slow to focus and loud when focusing. That being said, for $, this lens is tough to beat.
