Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Overview

Spanning a flexible range of telephoto focal lengths, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens characterized by its relatively compact size and versatility. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Also, a floating elements mechanism is employed to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range for notable sharpness from 3.9' to infinity.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this 70-300mm also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-480mm equivalent focal length range.
Two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that is optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating focus mechanism maintains consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 3.9' to infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Reviews

B&H is a great store and this is a wonderful lens!

I have been taking pictures since my first pinhole camera in grade school (over 40 years ago). Over the years I have upgraded my equipment (body) but never the lens. I have always used the kit lens that came with the camera. Money was always the reason for not getting better glass. After a lot of research and saving my pennies, I was able to get the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens. Within just a few test shots I learned that upgrading to a more expensive lens is worth it. The attached photo is just a simple test picture of the moon, at 6 am, without a tripod. In the past I was never able to get clear images of the craters on the moon. In a nut shell, I found it was definitely worth the money to get a better lens. And B&H photo did a great job in shipping the lens! It was ordered late Saturday night and was at my door by Thursday! Oh...there is a problem with this lens. From my understanding, this lens is no longer in production. If you find one and think you want it, get it. These are very hard to find.

Very sharp.

I used the less expensive Canon 70-300mm for years. For some reason the AF went out some time ago. I was pretty good at manual focus so I used it for a long time. Recently I noticed that I could not get a sharp photo so I decided to upgrade. This lens is simply amazing. Beautiful and very sharp images.

Can't use extenders w lens

I was very unhappy to find out, only after the return window, that my Canon 1.4x and 2x extenders are not compatible with this lens. I was hoping to get more reach with a quality lens in a smaller size with my APS-C Canon. Very disappointed. I feel misled, and now have a brick that doesn't do what i bought it for.

Definitely a keeper.

I've had this lens awhile and am just starting to get comfortable with it. My first thoughts were it's awfully heavy and too easy to zoom, as if it should have a little more friction when turning the barrel. I don't like the focusing ring behind the zoom, too easy for your hand to move the focus while zooming. Like most zooms it's slow but you learn to live with that. It's focusing is quick and spot on and quiet but as for the techie stuff I'll leave that to the the techies, but trust me it produces some great images. I have the same type of lens (70-300) on my Nikon line and it is easier to adapt to as a walking around lens due to it being lighter and a little smaller and produces equally impressive images. All things considered I'd recommend the lens and if I had the choice to do it over, I'd buy it again. In fact, I'm going to buy the 300mm prime version next.

If you need or want the best in quality it is worth the extra cost.

Ordered a week ago and arrived the 2 days ago, and a day before my birthday. Decided to snap some scenery pictures around my apt complex to take for a test drive, and the clarity of this lens is phenomenal!! The color contrast and focus is superb compared to the standard IS lens. I am already excited to do more with this lens in the days and weeks to come, as well as doing action shots testing focus and zoom capabilities in the near future. If you're looking to update your lenses, this is a go to lens that does great and being only about 3 lbs, you won't notice or tire easy from use. Pictures attached to show clarity of lens with color and focus is borderline HD quality.

Incredibly suitable for the sensor and will be a nice, sharp, and more portable alternative to say a 100-400mm.

question

What is the range on a small sensor camera like the 7d?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 7D is a fast camera, so this lens should be a great addition to your kit. Should be no problem using it, and as stated before, the crop sensor will make it 112-480mm equivalent. 300 doesn't give you huge reach, tho I've got shots at Diamondback games that are pretty good using a 300 on a 7D
