Canon Extender EF 2x III Overview

The Extender EF 2X III from Canon is designed for select Canon EF mount L-series telephoto lenses. It increases the focal length of a lens by a factor of 2x while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, it combines redesigned optics, improved data communication between lens and camera and enhanced environmental protection. It is ideal for photojournalists and wildlife, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects and it reduces the need to carry heavy telephoto lenses.

The Extender EF 2x III features nine optical elements in five groups, ensuring improved optical performance. All optical elements have Canon's Super Spectra coating to reduce ghosting and flare. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, the extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available - allowing the photographer to capture balanced, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable AF accuracy even when capturing moving subjects. When attached, the 2x extender reduces the effective maximum aperture by 2 stops.

A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon's professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

More zoom out of my 70 200

You lose a couple of stops of light (from 2.8 to 5.6) on a 70-200 but who's counting? I didn't have to fork out $5,000 for a 400mm 2.8 right? Be careful as it doesn't fit ALL L canon lenses but it works a treat on the EF lens adaptor on my R3 even though the whole caboodle is getting a bit long with all the extenders and adaptors!

Very nice. Quite sharp.

I've tested this Canon EF 2x extender lll with both my Canon 70-200mm L series lens and a Sigma 150-600mm DG contemporary lens. The image stays effectively sharp. There is definitely a little loss of clarity, but its not enough to stop me from using it at any given time. I'm quite happy with it.

Better than the last time I tried one

The last time I tried a 2X I was unhappy with the results with my 500mm f4. I had heard from a friend that he went through three of them before he found one that produced acceptable results. So I guess not all teleconverters are made equal.

Great Extender

Have only had the opportunity to use it once but it turned my EF 100-400 into a 200-800. Loved the outcome even if it did drop me down to f11 on my Eos R6. Great!!!!

The Canon 2X III Converter

Auto focus does not work with this extender if it is mounted with a 100-400mm on a non- mirrorless canon. Even when used with R5 mirrorless camera, auto focus is very very slow and frustrating. It is not as good as the 1.4 extender. It' disappointing.

Best extender for EF lenses

The extender is better than the Sigma 2x. It shows decent chromatic aberration and it is sharp. I know some people will say the lenses look blurrier, but not for me. I guess it depends on the glass. I used the Sigma 70-200mm Sport and Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, if you are debating which extender to have. This is the one.

Decided to start shooting birds and other critters and bought the extender for my beloved 70-200mm 2.8 L, the lens which convinced me to switch from Nikon to Canon when going digital in 2004. I've been very pleased with its performance and getting it with free one day delivery was why I continue to purchase from B&H.

question

How does it works with the 24-70 f/2.8 and with the macro 100 f/2.8?
Asked by: Anisa R.
The Extender EF 2X III does not work with the 24-70 f/2.8 or the 100 f/2.8 macro. The shortest lens you can use this extender on is the 135 f/2.0.

question

Will this extender work with a Canon 5D Marc III, using the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens in Auto Focus or will this be a manual focus only option. How much clarity, if any, will be lost.
Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, you will lose autofocus using the Canon 2x EF Extender III with the 70-200mm f/4L IS on the 5D III. The extender will have an impact on the image quality you are used to getting from the lens, but the quality will be noticeably better than cropping the image.

Will it work with a EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS III USM on a 90D?
Asked by: Yo
While I don't have exact experience with your mentioned setup, I have used this extender with the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II (one version older) on both an 80D and 5D Mark IV. It works fine on both, aside from losing some speed/image quality that normally comes with extenders.

will this work with the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens ?
Asked by: Lucy
Yes but you will lose auto focus. You won't know if the shot is sharp until you get it to photoshop. The viewfinder isn't good enough. Using a monitor of at least 7 inches will help for tripod setups.'There's nothing more frustrating than seeing all of your images out of focus. These were taken handheld with this extender and the 100-400: www dot daviscustomdigital dot com/Launch-Photos/FH-ArabSat-2019/ I got lucky that day - manual focus!

question

Will the 2x auto-focus with a 70D body and 100-400L telephoto? Can you also confirm that the 1.4x will do so, as I read on the Q&A for that product?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 2x converter will cause the lens to be too dark for the 70D to autofocus as will the 1.4x converter.
