Canon Extender EF 2x III Overview

The Extender EF 2X III from Canon is designed for select Canon EF mount L-series telephoto lenses. It increases the focal length of a lens by a factor of 2x while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, it combines redesigned optics, improved data communication between lens and camera and enhanced environmental protection. It is ideal for photojournalists and wildlife, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects and it reduces the need to carry heavy telephoto lenses.

The Extender EF 2x III features nine optical elements in five groups, ensuring improved optical performance. All optical elements have Canon's Super Spectra coating to reduce ghosting and flare. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, the extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available - allowing the photographer to capture balanced, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable AF accuracy even when capturing moving subjects. When attached, the 2x extender reduces the effective maximum aperture by 2 stops.

A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon's professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

Canon Extender EF 2x III Reviews

A great with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens

I was waiting for Canon Extender EF 2X III for a long while. I am very happy with it to extend the zoom to 400 mm on my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens which is the best lens I have. Lately I have been photographing Hawks, Hummingbirds and etc and find this Canon Extender EF 2X III gives me the ability to photograph at 400mm without purchasing another Canon lenses. With this Extender EF 2X III, the maximum aperture is smaller by 2 stops (f/5.6 for my lens). With Canon EOS 5D Mark III body, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens and Canon Extender EF 2X III, it weights about 6.4 pounds which is a little heavy but manageable. Overall, I am glad I purchased this 2X Extender.

This is a definite must have in a camera bag. I have a telephoto that I thought would do what I wanted. For the most part it does but when I needed more it was disappointing. The 2X extender makes the lenses even better. Quality is second to none lick all Canon products. B&H guided me with answers to my questions and even suggested this extender. Thank you it is exactly what I needed.

I call it my poor man's 420 and 600. I use the 1.4 for football games giving me 420mm and sometimes I get a chance to shoot wildlife. Thanks to this extender I get a 600mm lens. Is it as sharp as a prime 600, I'm sure not, but suits my purposes very well at a fraction of the cost! My 300 prime can be that, or a 420 or a 600. Works for me!

Works but can't crop in post.

Gives a nice extension on your glass but it dulls the image. Might be better off not using and cropping in post. I find the 1x4 works better but still slightly soft.

Awesome!!

Works perfectly with my 100 - 500 and 70 - 200 lenses. Love that autofocus still works with this attached. Feel like I now have 4 lenses for the price of 2!!

question

How does it works with the 24-70 f/2.8 and with the macro 100 f/2.8?
Asked by: Anisa R.
The Extender EF 2X III does not work with the 24-70 f/2.8 or the 100 f/2.8 macro. The shortest lens you can use this extender on is the 135 f/2.0.

question

Will this extender work with a Canon 5D Marc III, using the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens in Auto Focus or will this be a manual focus only option. How much clarity, if any, will be lost.
Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, you will lose autofocus using the Canon 2x EF Extender III with the 70-200mm f/4L IS on the 5D III. The extender will have an impact on the image quality you are used to getting from the lens, but the quality will be noticeably better than cropping the image.

Asked by: Yo
While I don't have exact experience with your mentioned setup, I have used this extender with the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II (one version older) on both an 80D and 5D Mark IV. It works fine on both, aside from losing some speed/image quality that normally comes with extenders.

question

Will the 2x auto-focus with a 70D body and 100-400L telephoto? Can you also confirm that the 1.4x will do so, as I read on the Q&A for that product?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 2x converter will cause the lens to be too dark for the 70D to autofocus as will the 1.4x converter.

question

Hello there,Does it work with 5D MarkII and:EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Asked by: Anonymous
No it does not. This converter is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L. Zoom lenses whose widest focals are less than 70mm are not compatible with any teleconverters due to their construction.
