Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Overview

If you are looking for a single solution to cover all possible scenarios, the E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens from Sony may be a great choice for you. Able to provide a wide-angle to super telephoto equivalent zoom range of 27-300mm, shooters will enjoy taking photos of subjects both near and far without needing to swap out lenses. The lens also features a variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture for keeping the lens relatively compact and incorporates one ED element as well as four aspherical elements to reduce aberrations.

Featuring built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, users can enjoy sharper images with reduced camera shake. There is an Active Mode as well, for capturing smooth videos. Other benefits of this lens include a zoom lock switch that prevents zoom creep when the lens is not in use and an internal focus design that helps improve AF performance. Additionally, a seven-blade circular diaphragm helps create smooth, rounded bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-200mm offers users a vast wide-angle to super telephoto range equivalent to 27-300mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. This lens also offers an Active Mode which provides stabilization, even at the wide end, when shooting movies.
A zoom lock switch prevents the lens barrel from accidentally extending when not in use.
An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 11.8", and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Reviews

Had it for 8 years and still love it.

I’ve bought this lens from B&H 8 years ago for my a6000 and it is still my favorite lens. Took pictures from my daughter’s middle school robot challenge at Google, to her college graduation. She now uses it for shootings and video on her 6000, and I’m stuck with the Zeiss 16-70 (of which she also has a copy). Moving to the a7RIII and having to invest $$$ in great glass to beat the results from the 6000 combo.

Great lens all-around!

I purchased this for my upcoming trip abroad, as I wanted to be able to bring only one lens with me. I'm using it with a Hasselblad Lunar (images attached). For a mirrorless system, it is somewhat large, but if you're accustomed to carrying big DSLRs (like myself), I don't think it's a problem. The pictures that come out are crisp, and because of the versatility, I've been able to capture a range of subjects. I do wish the f-stop was lower, but this is something I anticipated when I was purchasing it. The lens itself feels solid and well-made. I've also attached a B+W 67mm UV filter to protect the glass from debris or scratches. Final thoughts: It's a worthwhile purchase. I'll have to use this as a reason to go on more vacations!

I love this lens.... within reason!

I purchased this lens about 4 months ago and was rather dramatic about its performance. For a walk around lens it is perfect! But I will not keep it on my camera. For what it is, it is very good. But don't try to extend it beyond its range. It is a solid and well built lens. The photos are good. It is a heavy lens. Love it! Enjoy it for what it is!

This lens is underrated by a lot of lens reviews

Im an advance amateur and have used many highly rated lenses.  Coming from the Canon camp - I have owned most of the Canon L zoom lenses:  16-35L, 24-105L, 24-70L, 70-200Ls, and 100-400L plus primes:  35mm f1.4L, 100mm f2.8L, and 135mm f2L.  Its almost 7 years that I own this lens since switching to the Sony mirrorless camp in 2011.  Since then, I have purchased and currently own the Sony 24mm f1.8, Sony 55mm f1.8, Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8, Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8, and the Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS.  However, every time I need versatility Im still going back to this lens and it never failed me. I was first very skeptical about this lens because of its range.  I was worried about distortion on the wide end and the sharpness on the long end.  This lens proved me wrong.   Over the years, I have used it first on my Nex-5 then Nex-5N then to the current a6000.  Every time I went back and review the pictures that I took with this lens from any of my outings, it brought a smile to my face.  I was very surprise how little distortion at the 18mm end, the color and contrast are beautiful, and very sharp. These pics are straight from the camera (unedited).

Big results requires the big lens!

People who have trouble with low light or focusing with this lens should use it with better camera. I bought my A6300 with the original 16-50mm small lens then upgraded to the SEL18200 to discover the camera could deliver so much more than I expected. When fitted on the A6300/A6500 cam, this lens has amazing autofocus and stabilisation performance because of the much greater number of AF points than on the NEX series of cams. Although quite large and heavy compared to the small mirrorless cams it is designed to be used on, this lens will give such a huge kick in performance to your APS-C cam, you probably won't ever want to use anything else. The 200mm telephoto provides the equivalent of a 300mm lens on a full frame cam. The large diameter provides for top quality low distortion photos or videos from wide angle all the way to maximum zoom. Autofocus and stabilisation is excellent in all but the lowest lighting conditions where the speed is getting too low. The con, of course, is you've just tripled the weight of your camera. A small price to pay to bring home the best pictures. This lens is just about the best companion to the Superior Auto mode of the A6300/A6500 rivaled only by the much more expensive SELP18200 or a cine lens. It's great for shooting 4k or time lapse clips as well.

Great all rounder

The lens is built well, feels solid. It's a bit heavy but nothing too bad. Focus and zoom are very smooth, images are sharp (check out the DX0 mark on this lens, it's one of the sharper ones Sony makes). I'd highly recommend this over the kit lens in terms of image quality and overall versatility.

I love this lens

question

Hi, is this lens compatible with the Sony A7R?Thanks,A
Asked by: Anonymous
You can use the Sony E-Mount 18-200mm lens on the a7R, though there will be limitations. The 18-200mm lens is not a full frame lens, so you would need to have the camera in the APS-C size sensor mode.

Yes, it works with the flash coming with the camera. But you may experience some light fall off when zoom in all the way. I can't answer for the external viewfinder since I've never tried.
