This is a replacement for the original one that came with my lens. It's a nice hood - easy on / easy off. We'll see how long this one lasts - the original made it for one year.

This hood came with my 55-300mm DX lens, which I bought to use with my D3100. That should tell you how long I have had the lens and hood. This hood has two buttons on the sides and literally snaps on to the lens in any orientation. No need to fiddle with twisting it the right way for it to lock onto the lens. A lens hood is a no-frills item, but it does its job. I would go 5 stars, except that I think Nikon's price is a little steep for what it is.

Yes, this lens hood would be extremely use when shooting birds and wildlife in order to reduce lens flare as well as general protection for the lens.
