Wait! That's not all: the K-r has an efficient dust removal mechanism that automatically shakes dust off the CMOS sensor, a custom image function for applying one of nine creative modes (such as Bleach Bypass, a dramatic effect used in movies) to any image you want, a digital filter function with a choice of 18 filters that can process images without a computer (including Starburst, Sketch, High Contrast, Fisheye, Toy Camera, Posterization, Retro, etc.), an upgraded HDR (High Dynamic Range) function to create a superb image in difficult lighting situations (by combining 3 different exposures of the same scene) even without a tripod, and 3 different cross processing options to create dramatically different colors. It even has a high-speed infrared data transmission system--the first in a Pentax camera.

Had to look all over to find this camera without resorting to online auctions! Very solid build, smooth operation, good first-time results for a novice DSLR (experienced SLR) user. Extraordinary crispness on floral close-up with kit lens (which has had mixed reviews). Glad to see it was manufactured in Taiwan/Philippines rather than the usual China. Looking forward to spending time learning more about 'fine-tuning' its settings for even better results!

I bought this camera after my old point-and-shoot died, and so far I'm really pleased with it. It's easy to use, but it also has many options to please photo enthusiasts. I'd definitely recommend this product to friends and family members.

I started out with a Pentax K1000 slr and loved it. Then went digital with a Fuji s5000. It was ok but limited. So I decided to go back to Pentax. After shopping around, I felt this package was a great deal considering what is inclueded. I read the reviews and got the impression the camera is pretty rugged. I have since proven that to be true! Along with recreational use, I use the camera for taking before and after pictures of jobs that I do so clarity and close up detail (under fair to poor lighting) is important. So far it has been very good on just the automatic setting. I have yet to venture into the manual controls to really see what it can do but, just what I have done, I have NO doubts on the performance of the Kr.

Will be used as a back-up camera... in particular when my other camera is set-up for long distance and I need to quickly take a close-up shot

Good as it gets.

A little older than the latest and greatest, but it's totally pro. My friend who is an artist and high-school art teacher uses this camera. He let us play around with it and we were immediately hooked. Lots of options. Serious users only!

Giving up film update.

After many monts of use I find this camera very good. Everything works fine and the images are something to behold. 12 megapixels is enough for anyone. I'm going for the AA battery holder next. As per the manual, it will give me twice the exposures with flash. JR Well, I was going to add some sample images but that doesn't work well. One made it.

its more than what you expect

I am photo enthusiast interested in wildlife. Pentax kr is good in low light conditions, high shutter speed and fps make it easy to catch moving animals. Has multiple built in camera effects so avoiding the need for a computer. The only cons is the shake reduction at times that too when shot in low light. Apart from that, its bang for the bucks.

Easily beats famous manufacturers

This is my first DSLR, and so I did a lot of research before buying it. As I don't give that much for hype and status for wearing a Nikon or Canon, I didn't wipe out of my search any manufacturer. Then I found this little treasure. I've read lots of reviews from its previous model K-x, and all of them were positive. The K-r is an improvement. Its pictures are very sharp and the colors distinguish very well from each other. ISO noise is very low up to 800 and even in 1600+ it's pretty acceptable. Awesome anatomic fitting, not so heavy, and the battery lasts a lot. If you don't feel comfortable using only the battery, you can get an AA batteries adapter to use them in emergency cases. The LCD is large and clear, and the live view also works pretty well. The only down sides are the video mode which isn't that great. Only supports 720p, doesn't have continuous autofocus and the videos end up being pretty large, as the compression method is Motion JPEG. But that isn't that important, as I got this camera to photograph. The other thing is the shutter and autofocus are a bit loud. It doesn't bother me (in a matter of fact, I think it's pretty cool that click sound being loud), but for some it might be annoying. The lenses and the camera body are very well built and I feel safe using them. The rubber parts make the camera very comfortable to grasp. It has so many functions and shoot modes that you can customize every single aspect of the shot. And yet, it has an full automatic mode for your parents to use, that still delivers awesome pictures. In the overall, this is a great camera. Get it while you can! I'm pretty sure I'll stick with PENTAX from now on.
