Etymotic Research ER-20 overview

  • 1Description

The ER-20 ETY-Plugs Triple-Flange Earplugs (Standard, Clear/Blue) from Etymotic are a compact and inexpensive way to reduce sound levels around you, while still maintaining the ability to hear clearly. Ideal for use by musicians and those who work in loud environments such as parades, motor sports, and athletic events, these high-fidelity earplugs reduce sound by up to 20dB across all frequencies.

By reducing sound evenly, the earplugs reduce the risk of hearing damage, but also keep music and speech clear and natural, not muffled. The earplugs are configured to replicate the natural response of the ear canal so that sound comes through exactly as it should, only quieter.

Compact and affordable design with a triple-flange construction that fits readily into most ears
Ideal for musicians and those who work in loud environments
Can reduce volume levels by up to 20dB across all frequencies without muffling speech or music
The tuned resonator and acoustic resistor replicate the natural sound response of the ear canal so that sound comes through clearly but at a lower volume level
Can enhance the music experience for musicians and audiences. Many musicians report that they can hear their own instrument better, as well as the balance of those around them when using the earplugs
Regular usage can help to reduce the cumulative effects of prolonged exposure to loud sounds

    Etymotic Research ER-20 reviews

    ER-20 ETY-Plugs Triple-Flange Earplugs (Standard, Clear/Blue) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from For the price, can't beat them I do studio work, so I'm very concerned about my hearing, specially when going to concerts and other live gigs. These let you enjoy the music so much more. Everything just sounds more balanced because the peaks created by the acoustics of the venue or by an incompetent sound man are blocked out. And you can better hear people around you. Plus, they are confortable enough to wear for a good couple of hours. Also to note, I took a chance on the Standard size, even though I believe my ear canals are larger than average. Only downside, I wish they'd look a little more discreet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't work for me Unfortunately, these don't work for me. I got two pairs of these and let my friend use one at a concert recently. For me, the left ear was fine, but the right ear was painfully uncomfortable (yes, I tried switching plugs between ears) and I couldn't achieve a good seal. It seemed at first as though they attenuate only enough to make a concert not painfully loud, but after a couple hours even that wasn't true. On the other hand... After the concert, my friend commented on how great the ETY-Plugs were and said she was going to buy a pair. So, 2 stars, rather than 1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for short term high sound pressure level exposure I'm an Audiology Assistant and hearing aid tech for 10 yrs. Before that a recording engineer and drummer. I have held a certificate from CAOHC for occupational hearing conservation. I do have a high freq hearing loss. This product has been known to me for many years and is an affordable protection from loud mid/high frequency sounds at a moderate SPL. The 20 rating I believe is an average of the reduction at each selected frequency. More protection is needed in the mids and highs than low freqs. Even though the high E on a guitar is only 660Hz and even the fourth harmonic is only 2.4k,at 120db SPL that can do some damage. OSHA regs state it's safe without protection 90db, 8hrs.,92db 4hrs.,94db 2hrs., 96db 1hr.,98db 1/2 hr., 100db 15 min..Even so high impacts are the worse, like snare drums. To get optimal protection you need custom plugs with Etymotic Pro filters that come 9,15,and 25 db of attenuation.those price out at $ a pair. so yes these are good protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i take these to every concert now I was talking to someone about concert being too loud and he told me the existence of these kind of earplugs. I did some research and found out ER-20 is the most popular type and felt that it didn't hurt to try. And I was very impressed. I went to the same concert twice (Taylor Swift concert at San Jose and then at San Diego), once before I got the earplugs and once after. These earplugs made the music sound better and the concert experience more enjoyable. For one, with the earplugs I could actually enjoy the opening acts without thinking omg this is too loud too loud too loud.... These earplugs don't reduce the clarity of the music. They just cut down the volume to a comfortable level, and this way, the music sounds better (and richer, in my opinion, since I actually caught more nuances and details of the songs than I did last time). Some people say that prolonged use of these earplugs can make your ears hurt. I used these for the entire duration of the concert (3+ hours) and didn't feel uncomfortable when I was using them or after I took them out. There are 2 types of these, standard and large. If you are not sure, choose the standard type since according to the maker, most people use the standard type just fine. Also don't insert them too deep. For me I just connected them with the string, and then twisted them into my ears until I felt they were secured. I didn't really pulled my ears back before doing that, as what is stated in the manual.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Satisfied Didn't realize until I received them that they come in two sizes. Consider trying the large. The standard size I received feels a bit on the small side

Rated 4 out of 5 by from They say HIGH FIDELITY on the package !! I drive an 18-wheeler, and I have been using several types of hearing protection to reduce fatigue.I also listen to music on the radio, and driving requires some recognition of the various sounds involved. While the Etymotics only produce 12db of attenuation, vs 20-28db from some of the others, the increase in clarity makes the trade-off doable, and the comfort for long term wear makes this an easy choice. Thanks for a great product and hassle-free service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable and work great for music I have used Etymotic earphones and liked them in the past. I bought these earplugs because I was going to a loud concert and don't really want more hearing loss.* The small size fit well in my very small ears* I forgot I was wearing them, they were so comfortable* Music quality sounded very good* Unlike many other people I wasn't tugging at my ears when the concert was over. I had no ringing or after effects from the noise. The case is sturdy and useful.
