    WD WDBACY5000ABL-NESN reviews

My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive (Blue) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 124.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from good value, good product I like that it's so small and compact. Saves large quantities of data pretty quickly. I'll see how long it will hold up (my previous portable hard drives of different brands had to be replaced every few years), but seems to do its job well. I like the color; matches my macbook exactly. Yes, you do have to spend a little time reformatting for mac but it was no problem doing so. However, I do not like the Smartware interface that wd installs onto your computer to manage files. I guess if you want to back up your entire computer it's useful but I only want to back up specific files so it's useless for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice product ! I purchased to use as portable storage for photographic images. I use it with a 24 iMac under Snow Leopard and have been very happy with it. It came ready to use with windows but converting it was a piece of cake. I was using it in about 10 minutes. One of my objectives was to be able to exchange images with my daughter. She operates under Windows. I, as I have indicated, use Mac OS X. Formatting it as FAT 32 did the trick. I would say that this product exceeded my expectations ... even my hopes. I have only had this product for a few days but it looks well built. I expect it to be reliable. It does operate as quickly as one would expect, given that it has a USB 2 interface. Plenty fast for my application. My next storage purchase was to buy a 3TB backup disk for my system. After my experience with this device, the decision was easy. I ordered a WD disk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Portable This is my second Passport. I use them to make duplicate back ups of my Mac Book. When I travel, one always goes with me and the other into the safe deposit box. I have had the first one for two years without a problem. This one, unlike the first one, did not automatically format when plugged in. It had to be done manually. WDC is helpful with that. I do not like the Smart Ware so I did not say install when prompted. The Smart Ware icon still shows up on the desktop. It is removable with much difficulty. I did it for the first Passport but did not even bother with this one. One nice thing is that, for some reason, the Smart Ware does not take up as much of the drive as it did on the previous one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I Needed! I use this hard drive to store video capture files for editing and production. It's a small and convenient size to bring with you on the go. Also, the USB 3.0 is very fast, significantly faster than USB 2.0. It was a little bit difficult to format for Mac but it is very doable. Besides that I have not encountered any other problems with this product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid, Reliable Hard Drive My only complaint about this product is that the process for reconfiguring it for a Mac was a little cumbersome. It is totally Mac compatible and will work with Time Machine and everything, but the process to get there is not completely clear. I would probably recommend that a Mac user who wants to plug and play get an external hard drive that is pre-configured for Mac use. Once I figured it out it was really easy. Like most other people who reviewed this product, I gave up on the software that came with it and it made my life easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect i bought this to backup photos. i got this model because it has the 2.0 and 3.0 usb port and if i change over to mac i can still use it, you would just have to reformat it. its size is great. i put into a small fire proof safe. you never want to be that family that loses everything. best price i could find. i live about 50 miles from the warehouse in brooklyn ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great hard drive for great price! This is the latest model of the WD Passport family and the best one yet! Not only is it smaller, lighter, quieter and more compact than previous generations but it is also USB 3 compatible! It's an excellent choice to keep and backup data, doesn't take up any room and virtually no weight when on the go! Boots right out of the box, has instant format feature right on the drive. I cannot think of any cons. And of course the best part is that B&H has the best price available anywhere for this! I am very pleased with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Portable Hard Drive Nothing wrong with this product at all. Small and light-weight, so it can go everywhere my laptop goes. My MacBook Pro hard drive was running out of space, so I needed somewhere to dump files, folders, and media that I don't regularly access to free up some space. Used Disk Utility to reformat to FAT32 in seconds. I love that it is USB 3.0 capable so if/when I upgrade, it won't be outdated. Haven't had any problems with speed, noise, or power. WD is a great brand! I have used it before and am always impressed.
