State-of-the-Art Optics

Incorporating high-performance, hybrid aspherical optical element in its optics, this new standard lens (focal length equivalent to 43.5mm in the 35mm format) offers exceptional image-resolving power with outstanding brightness levels even at the edges, while compensating various aberrations to a minimum. All lens characteristics are optimized for digital photography: for instance, flare and ghost images are minimized by applying exclusive lens coatings to optical elements and employing anti-reflection materials for the interior of the lens barrel.

Versatile Standard Lens

When mounted on the PENTAX 645D camera body, this standard lens offers a focal length which produces an angle of view close to that of the human eye. As the result, it can be used for many different kinds of subjects and applications, including landscapes and portraits.

Dustproof, Weather-Resistant Construction

Seven special seals make this lens dustproof and weather-resistant. This lens coupled with the Pentax 645D camera body provides a durable, reliable digital SLR camera that performs superbly, even in rain, mist, or locations prone to water splashes and spray. The "AW" (All Weather) designation in the lens name testifies to the weather-resistant construction and it is rated to operate in temperatures from 14-104ºF (-10 to 40ºC).

Aero Bright Coating Dramatically Improves Image Description in Backlight

The Pentax original Aero Bright coating on this lens delivers brilliant, high-quality images by preventing flare and ghost images more effectively. This exclusive coating effectively reduces lens reflectance and greatly increases light transmittance by forming a silica aerogel layer with uniform pores on the surface of optical element.

Rounded Diaphragm to Produce a Beautiful Bokeh

The first Pentax medium-format interchangeable lens to feature a completely rounded diaphragm, it creates a natural, beautiful "bokeh" (out-of-focus rendition), while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.

Smooth, Quiet SDM Autofocus

The SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor) autofocus mechanism operates smoothly and quietly using the supersonic motor installed inside the lens barrel.

SP Coating Blocks Dust and Dirt

The front surface of the lens is treated with Pentax's SP (Special Protect) coating, which applies a fluorine compound to the lens surface through a vapor deposition process. This SP coating effectively repels dust, water and grease, and also makes it easy to wipe off fingerprints and cosmetics.

Advanced Focus Options

Quick-Shift Focus system instantly switches to manual focus operation, after the subject is captured in focus by the AF system.

Pentax D FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AL IF SDM AW Reviews

highly recommended for 645z

If you are new to the Pentax 645Z platform then you know that amazing glass is something you will struggle slightly with, especially if you are coming from the nikon or canon platform where there is a huge range of great lens options. Im a full time fashion / commercial photographer and added the 645z body to my toolbox for commercial and higher profile shoots and have used and tested every regular pentax lens thats offered for this body over the last year. After putting the 55mm through its paces for commercial, architectural, portrait and editorial I have to say its amazing. Very good contrast, tack sharp with great color reproduction. This is a solid lens choice for wider applications and for the price it simply can't be beat. I also highly recommend adding the less expensive 75mm to your len purchases also for when you find this to be slightly too wide. Because I shoot mainly person based sessions I find myself in the 75-150 range the most on this camera but the 55 has come in handy plenty of times and always performs beautifully. the auto focus is fast and quiet and the lens construction is solid and reliable. I also noticed that it has less vignetting then other 55mm models i have tried for canon. at less than grand this is a must have for any pro or anyone getting into the 645z platform!

Great Lens if The Deal Is Found

Wonderful lens, small, light, sharp as a tack. I purchased this lens with the Z body under a special deal when purchased together, the total price of this lens was $ dollars. I am not sure I would be happy if I spent the full retail on this lens. It is a great piece of optics. I purchased the 90MM DFA to test this lens and when the files were reviewed the 90 is superior, but at what point and does it justify a 4x price tag? No, it doesn't.

Spectacular normal lens

This lens is so great in every way. First it has a very useful 43mm equiv. format, it fits in the middle of two traditional 'normal lens' 35mm and 50mm, you just put anything on frame and get no distortion of any kind. Second, its so sharp! Seriously no one can complain about this! It's as sharp as it might be all over the frame, I took some landscape photos and even at the fairest corner razor sharp. Last, but no least, its light, small and weather sealed. WS is a pretty underrated feature, it allows you to use on beachs, icy mountains, waterfalls -- So it takes large range of pictures. What I can say is: 645z + 55FA is the best combo I've ever seen, even comparing to Leicas and Hasselblads

That is a wonderfully sharp prime lens! Shooting on my Pentax 645z is a dream for that innate medium formate look. I would nightly recommend this as a must have in your camera bag...

Used with a 645z, the weather sealing and light weight make this an awesome performer in inclement weather. Fantastic contrast, sharpness and bokeh.

Very disappointed

I really don't understand all the great reviews . This lens is sharp in the center and very soft in the corners and edges, even stopped down to f8. Also a fair bit of distortion . I was really shocked and dissapointed by how poorly it performs . Didn't really notice it until I started using for work, photographing paintings. Everything shot was unusable . Thought I had a lemon until I used my friends lens and got them same results .
