I need it to hold my Lumi-Quest softbox, or a Rogue Flash Bender on a Canon 430 EX II (not at the same time). Since I use it for light painting at night, it gets bumped around, shoved under an arm or in a coat pocket. The combination of a rubber backing and elastic in the band holds it quite secure. I had another brand that costs the same, but lost it after the second use. I'd go with this again.

This strap is a little different from my last. It has floppy velcro occasionally sewed to elastic. It works well if you get it tight, which you don't always do when in a hurry. I like the velcro and the pull tab, though.

This Velcro strap is very useful for attaching Lumiquest's 'softboxes' to speedlight flashes (such as the Canon 430EX), quickly and easily. (The strap is typically left glued to the flash.) After at least a couple of years of use (often outdoors), I found that the glue wore off and the strap didn't stay attached to the flash. This was natural, and so I bought a couple of more straps. Good product.

Is the outside surface of the strap the smooth loop velcro or the rougher hook velcro?

Rubber, non-slip surface on the inside. Smooth loop Velcro on the outside. The rubbery base layer also provides a bit of stretch so that it holds on with a bit of tension.
