    Audio-Technica Consumer Pro 88W reviews

Pro 88W Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mic if used properly It gets the job done and is very reasonably (cheap) for a lavalier mic and wireless transmitter and receiver for less then the cost of most microphones alone. We have used it for demonstration videos with the demonstrator talking into the mic and then transmitting the audio signal to the video camera. It works great for this type of use where you want to capture someone speaking but you have to understand its limitations as with any piece of equipment. There is an omni-directional mic offered as well but it is going to pick up a lot of ambient sounds and make for a poor recording at most locations. Usually when people complain about a particular situation it is from having used an omni directional mic where a directional cardiod one would have been a wiser choice. It is a cardiod microphone so it is somewhat directional which is a good thing but you will not pick up multiple people using it and in general no single mic is good for that purpose. It is a lot easier to manage than a shotgun mic and no stand and boom and wind muffler are needed. It has two channel options set with a slide switch. Power on and off is also done with a slide switch which is great. Too often equipment gets turned on when packing it away and then the batteries are quickly drained. The channel option is in part to avoid the frequency used by local TV transmitters which can interfere with the wireless signal from the Pro 88W transmitter. This is not unusual and the only way to get around this is to use a powered mic and run FLA cables to it (otherwise the mic cable becomes a very good antenna and picks up signals from everywhere in the vicinity). Most electronic equipment in home and office environments are very dirty in terms of the noise emmissions and FCC regs are for the most part a joke. Add in the use of plastic enclosures and RF emmissions are everywhere in the industrialized world. Turning any unnecessary equipment (especially computers) in the area. For the price it is an excellent value and in all situations in which we have used the kit it has performed perfectly and we have gotten excellent results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unusable I was really excited after reading the reviews for this mic. The day it arrived and I tested it out for the first time, it worked wonderfully- no interference or problems of any kind. I thought, Wow, this is so great for the price! The next time I tried it out a few days later (when it was down to the wire and I had a shoot the very next day), it was nothing but VERY LOUD static. It was horrible on both channels. I even got into my car and drove miles away to see if I just happened to be picking up some weird interference, but it was still horrible and filled with deafening static. I returned this for a refund, and although it might have just been a faulty or defective product, I don't want to take the risk again on this mic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great system on a shoestring budget! I bought this additional system to use in taping an at home cooking show with two people cooking. I now own identical cameras, wireless mic systems, and other accessories to match. That will encourage me to use both wireless systems on a shoot. Its sensitive and does a great job gathering sound for a mono system. The one thing I wish this system had was a less sensitive microphone, or a sensitivity control to inhibit all the extra noise that comes in. It might be better if I could find a better microphone match so that I only hear sound from a three or four foot radius. This is my second Pro 88W system. It works great on weddings IF you can get the groom in the right place next to the bride. Not always possible. I like this system. Its great for the money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from One Dimensional I have used this lavalier system for some pretty simple interviews with artists and designers. I have also used it for better sound in the field when working with actors. It is much better when it is used for the sit down interviews. So far, all that I like about it is the fact that it's light weight and durable. The sound quality it picks up is also pretty good. What I don't like is the fact that it seems to only record in mono. It's wireless range is 5 feet at best (without any static or interference), and it doesn't have a way to signal the battery power. All in all... meh.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok for Budget Video This is the 2nd one of these that Ive owned in my video business. Its not the best for distance shoots like weddings but for close, interview style shoots its pretty good. Affordable and durable for sure. I would have rather upgraded to the Rode wireless videomaker or a Sony wireless, both which Ive owned before and are far better. Since this was needed on a budget, it's great for what I needed and will make a nice backup system in the future. (Side note: the 9v batteries dont last as long as some of the other more professional style ENG mics, can be hard to put in and out at times; but this is a good mic for simple shoots, not for broadcast b/c of it being VHF, too much interference around florescent lighting.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality, Quality Product I am a videographer and use this product to pick up audio at weddings. Before owning this lavalier system, I was always trying to boost the audio from the internal mics. Bad idea. These mics have stepped up the game for all my future weddings and I'm thankful I made such an investment!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Produces Completely Useless Audio If I could put 0 stars I would. It's so conducive to interference that in most environments that I've tried to use it, it produces horrible buzzing. I've never been able to use the audio recorded from this mic. Save your money towards something better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Sound But Stay Close Not great from the distance advertised. I couldn't stray much farther than 15' before sound started to distort a bit.
