Pentax 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens is a high-quality telephoto zoom lens that is designed for exclusive use with Pentax digital SLR cameras. It offers a focal length that is equivalent (in 35mm format) from 27.5 to 207mm. This wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery.

The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in Pentax digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. This design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.

Pentax DA (DA-Star) zoom lenses come equipped with the SDM System, which assures smoother, quieter auto-focusing operation by using a built-in supersonic motor. Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with smc coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images.

In addition, SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Extended 7.5X zoom range is ideal for a wide range of shooting conditions.
Weather resistant to handle damp, inclement conditions.
Compact and lightweight design for easy portability.
Direct Current (DC) motor supports quick, quiet autofocus operation.
Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating helps repel dust, water, and grease, making the lens easier to clean.
Pentax Quick Shift focus system allows instant on-the-fly switching from auto to manual focus.
An aspherical lens element helps to compensate for spherical aberration to maximize image quality.
Equivalent to 27.5-207mm in the 35mm format.
Developed specifically for Pentax digital SLR cameras.

    Pentax 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Niiiice..... Well, coming from an all Olympus system, including a Zuiko 12-60 mm, this lens does what its supposed to do. It is sharp enough, light enough, fast enough to fill the bill. Its focussing is really fast and totally silent. The size and weight are a perfect complement to the pentax K5 I recently bought. I have been enjoying the lens this week on a snowy trip here in Jackson, WY. Nice not to worry about the weather! The cons, well would be nicer to have f 2.8, but of course then it would be larger and heavier. The build quality is great, but the zuiiko 12-60 I came from was more tank like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great walk around lens I have both the Pentax DA 50-200mm WR Lens and the Pentax DA 18-55mm WR Zoom Lens for my k5. I wanted to get a walk around lens that would give me a wide angle and a decent zoom. After reading reviews on several different lenses and looking at the pros and cons I decided the Pentax 18-135mm WR Lens was my best choice since I wanted a WR lens. Recently I went to the New England Patriots' training camp practice and I just took my 18-135mm lens not wanting to carry several lenses. I took over a hundred pictures and I was very pleased with all of them shooting from 18mm to 135mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice walk-around lens I was looking for a solid walk-around zoom lens, something I could throw on my K-5 and leave the kit bag behind. This lens fits the bill. It's wide enough for decent landscape shots and has enough range to shoot portraits as well as close-ups, plus it's weather-resistant! Some have criticized this lens for its lack of sharpness relative to quality Pentax primes but for my purposes, I haven't noticed and the flexibility is great. Not being a fixed-focal length lens makes this both affordable and relatively lightweight though it won't be the best for indoor/lowlight at max zoom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast little Auto Focus Bought this to go with my Pentax Kr body. I wanted an all-around lens so I wouldn't be changing lenses alot. Nice wide angle at the short distance and a pretty good zoom on the far end. Had a great Tokina on my old ME Super that was pretty big and heavy and this seems to match the quality and zoom of the Tokina in a much smaller and light weight size. Photo quality seems good but haven't had it on but only a couple weeks. Auto focus is FAST. If it doesn't seem quite right you can manually adjust. The Tokina was a manual focus so now having the auto is a whole new world for me! Bought a clear filter for the front for protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Photo journalisM: This lens lives on my K-50 What can I say? After a year-and-a-half after buying both the K-50 and,a few weeks later, this lens, I depend on this combination more often than not as a photographer for a regional online news service. Even though I also own a full-frame Nikon, which I like very much and use frequently, I usually rely on the Pentax K-50 and the 18-135mm lens, especially if the weather is not good. Gotta love the weather sealing! The attached photos were taken yesterday (snow flurries were flying) with this combo and appeared in the online news service. Also, I normally process all of my photos in DXO Optics Pro 11.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Preferred walk-around lens Pentax best walk-around lens. Due to WR a little drizzle or mist at the beach is no longer a worry. Although truly an outdoor lens, shooting a college basketball game was quite easy with a K-5. Overall I found the low end comparable to a da16-45 (very good) but at 135mm not quite as sharp as a da55-300 (good, not great). That is my only con for this new lens. Image quality noticably better than da18-55WR. Great for people shots, not birding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic every day lens I purchased the SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens by Pentax when I bought a K5 body when they first came out it was my first and only lens for a long period of time I definitely made the right decision the photos have been fantastic, it is quick to focus on any subject matter and all shot so far have turned out perfect. The WR rating was a big consideration as it matched the K5 perfectly if you can only afford one lens when you're just starting out this is the lens to get. It seems to me that the people who were having any kind of trouble with this lens tend to have an older Model Pentax E.g. anything before a K7 and anyone with a K5 or a K3 have no problem with this lens whatsoever it's just an observation I have seen with the reviews.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use it on the K-5 Some poor reviews of this lens, but I took a chance and I'm very pleased. The answer is to put the lens on a K-5, enter the lens correction menu, select correct pincushion and barrel distortion, select correct lateral chromatic aberration and the camera will do the rest. Takes a bit longer to write/process the shot, but it works very well. The lens is very well made.
