Pentax DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Overview

The Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens is a high-quality telephoto zoom lens that is designed for exclusive use with Pentax digital SLR cameras. It offers a focal length that is equivalent (in 35mm format) from 27.5 to 207mm. This wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery.

The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in Pentax digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. This design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.

Pentax DA (DA-Star) zoom lenses come equipped with the SDM System, which assures smoother, quieter auto-focusing operation by using a built-in supersonic motor. Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with smc coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images.

In addition, SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Extended 7.5X zoom range is ideal for a wide range of shooting conditions.
Weather resistant to handle damp, inclement conditions.
Compact and lightweight design for easy portability.
Direct Current (DC) motor supports quick, quiet autofocus operation.
Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating helps repel dust, water, and grease, making the lens easier to clean.
Pentax Quick Shift focus system allows instant on-the-fly switching from auto to manual focus.
An aspherical lens element helps to compensate for spherical aberration to maximize image quality.
Equivalent to 27.5-207mm in the 35mm format.
Developed specifically for Pentax digital SLR cameras.

I have 3 Pentax DSLR Lenses. including a Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED lens, Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL IF Lens, a Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL IF Lens, and this one. All good lenses, but This one is my favorite. The pictures are noticeably sharper with this one. It is Perfect for my K20D and my K3-ii.

Photo journalisM: This lens lives on my K-50

What can I say? After a year-and-a-half after buying both the K-50 and,a few weeks later, this lens, I depend on this combination more often than not as a photographer for a regional online news service. Even though I also own a full-frame Nikon, which I like very much and use frequently, I usually rely on the Pentax K-50 and the 18-135mm lens, especially if the weather is not good. Gotta love the weather sealing! The attached photos were taken yesterday (snow flurries were flying) with this combo and appeared in the online news service. Also, I normally process all of my photos in DXO Optics Pro 11.

SDM - Waiting to fail

Nice optics though soft at 70mm. A GENERALLY well made lens that performs nicely as an everyday shooter. So why one star? Unfortunately, this nice lens was designed with the horribly unreliable (my opinion) SDM motors and as opposed to other SDM lenses this one has no fall back to screw-drive. When the SDM stops working you're dead in the water with a nice looking paperweight. I purchased this silly lens at $$on sale and now see what a waste that was. I knew about the SDM problems as mention of them is hard to avoid in Pentax photo forums. I figured that Pentax had probably fixed the problem by now and went ahead with the purchase. A couple years into use and the lens started acting up and failing to focus until it was exercised for a while. Then it basically quit. It is useless now and I purchased a Sigma to replace it.Another point to consider is that I don't think Pentax has introduced any new SDM lenses in quite a while. Maybe they have quietly given up on SDM?Oh, and don't think that manual focus is any consolation. The focus throw on the 17-70 is so short and lacking in damping that it's basically useless for manual work. You can ignore me, but I'm willing to bet you will regret it.

Lowered expectations.

Bought this to replace a Tamron 18-200.  Thought the Pentax lens, with less range, would be sharper than the Tamron.  It isnt.  That doesnt mean its bad, just not sharper than a $200 aftermarket lens.  However it is WR and has a quick focus ring, so thats better, but Im still using my Tamron most of the time.

I would buy this product again.

This lens is my everyday all purpose lens. I take it everywhere. It is fast, quiet and more than adequate for my needs as amateur photographer.

question

Is this lense compatible with pentax k1000?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 is designed for use with Pentaxs Digital SLRs. While you can mount the lens on the K1000, the image circle wont cover an entire frame of film, so there will be extreme vignetting.

Will this lens take a 1:1 ratio?
Asked by: George
We're afraid not. This is not a macro lens. The Pentax smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens will give you a 1:1 ratio, you may want to consider this lens instead. B&H # PE10028MDFAW - https://bhpho.to/2jipEhn
