  • 1Description

The Nikon Coolpix P5100 is designed to satisfy the needs of photography enthusiasts, and professional photographers looking for a compact yet versatile digital camera. It provides an astounding 12.1 effective megapixels of resolution, and combined with Nikon's innovative EXPEED digital image processor, the P5100 reproduces the finest details and subtlest tones with precision and clarity, even when taking advantage of sensitivity settings as high as ISO 3200. Furthermore, the precision 3.5x Zoom Nikkor lens is endowed with Nikon's proven optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization system that counteracts the effects of camera shake in lower light or when shooting unsteady subjects to help achieve sharper results.

The mode dial of the Coolpix P5100 allows users to quickly access four advanced exposure modes that offer both enthusiasts and more advanced photographers greater personal control over the camera. In addition the camera is programmed with a variety of automated and scene modes that provide for the simplest operation. It is easy to compose your shots on the 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD monitor that provides a wide 170-degree viewing angle for easier framing and more reassured shooting, and there is also an optical viewfinder to aid composition, particularly in brightly lit conditions.

The quality-crafted body of the Coolpix P5100 is made of a durable magnesium alloy, and features a quality finish, with a comfortable grip covered in grid-pattern rubber. The cameras capabilities can also be expanded with the availability of optional converter lenses that further extend the cameras wide-angle and telephoto reach, plus the built-in accessory shoe adds support for Nikon Speedlights and advanced i-TTL flash control.

12.1 Megapixels for Superb Image Quality
The 1/1.72-inch RGB CCD can capture an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels providing images that capture the finest details of your subjet with the ability to crop creatively and produce beautiful enlargements.
3.5x Zoom-Nikkor Lens
the P5100 incorporates a powerful 3.5x Zoom- Nikkor lens that provides superb image sharpness, plus the camera provides a 4x digital zoom that extends compositional freedom, and macro shooting capability that can focus as close as 1.6" (4 cm).
Shooting Mode Dial for Greater Control
the P5100 provides four exposure modes that are easily accessed via the Mode dial to provide greater control over camera operation. The Programmed Auto [P] mode automatically selects the optimal shutter and aperture settings; Shutter-priority Auto [S] lets the user select shutter speed, while the camera sets the optimal aperture; Aperture-priority Auto [A] offers 10-step manual control over the aperture setting to let the user decide depth of field, while the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed; and the Manual [M] exposure mode provides full control over both the aperture and shutter speed settings.
Lens Shift VR Image Stabilization
Optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) is field proven technology that provides the ability to shoot at shutter speeds as much as three stops slower without blurring the image, as well as producing a smoother viewfinder image which aids composition. Nikon's VR system also yields sharper results when using the optional telephoto converter lens.
Enhanced Performance with EXPEED
The advanced EXPEED image processing system provides optimized performance and color reproduction, and Nikon's signature 'look and feel' of rich accurate colors, smooth skin gradations and exceptional detail

Furthermore, the EXPEED image processing engine provides clear results and effective noise reduction, even when shooting with high ISO settings.
Nikon In-Camera Red-Eye Fix

The Nikon D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by automatically brightening the dark areas in the picture, while maintaining the brighter areas of the image.
Nikon Face-Priority AF
The Face-Priority AF system automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame for crisp, sharp portraits.
Distortion Control
The innovative distortion control feature corrects for barrel distortion when shooting in at wide angles, and even displays the corrected image on the LCD in real time.
Creative Digital Filters for Monochrome Photography
When shooting monochrome images, the P5100 provides a choice of 4 different digital filters for creative effects, (yellow, orange, red and green).

The improved menu interface makes it much easier and faster to locate and activate any of the cameras feature, plus the camera menus are available in a choice of 23 languages.

    Nikon 25580B reviews

Coolpix P5100 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Point and Shoot for the Professional! I did a lot of research and testing before making this purchase and I am extremely satisfied! I am a digital artist who does portraiture on the side. I have used this camera for both. The manual dials, video, and portrait assist are wonderful! The size makes it ideal for carrying around on a daily basis or in more hazardous situations in which you wouldn't want to bring the DSLR. It's much smaller and lighter than the Canon G9. It is a little harder to navigate than the G9, but once you get used to the controls, it is no sweat! I wish the Nikon P5100 had RAW, but at close to$ less, the difference just isn't big enough!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone should own this camera If you are not a professional photographer, but want really profesional pictures then this is your camera. I bought this for my wife because I was tired of her using my camera. Nikon got everything right when it comes to a camera that anyone can use. The price is just right al well. The battery lasts forever and the image quality is amazing. Low light, action shots, what ever you want to take. I love the image stablizer because if you want to turn the flash off the camera wont get crazy on you and give you fuzzy photos. You really have to try this camera and you will see what a great product this is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value. We use it for on-set, behind the scenes movie stills and the occassional vacation. The 12MP makes it capable of poster quality prints. For me, it was either this one of the Canon G9, and at almost $175 cheaper and still capable of accepting additional lenses, the P5100 was an easy decision. The major difference between the the P5100 and G9, is that the G9 can save pics in the RAW format. Personally, I did not require this capability in a point and shoot, we already have an SLR more suited for that capability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera I was shocked at the fact I thought I had a pro level camera in my hand when I went to use this camera. It is easy to understand and set menu items. Great pictures especially in low light. Great resolution. Nikon did a great job with this one. I would highly recommend it to photographers who want a smaller camera for quick pix moments. Anyone really would benefit from this camera. Oh yes, and the battery holds the charge almost forever. I shoot with the D1X and D70s. This camera is at least as good. Expertise: Nature photographer. Problems Encountered: None at all. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Minolta Items I Recommend: Order the bag and 2gig card you are all set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! Just what I wanted. I'm a realtor and use this camera for photographing houses. It's small, great resolution and best of all GREAT COLORS. That was a problem with my last camera, and I chose Nikon because they're known for their great true colors. This camera is very intuitive as far as how to use it with menus etc. The only downsides for me are a short battery life before having to recharge, (but I think that's a problem with all cameras, and it's hard to find the view finder when I don't want to use the large monitor for viewing/composing shots. Overall though, I just love it! And 12 mega pixels to boot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm very happy with the P5100! Not so good things: Slow to focus (not shutter lag issue); 3.5X zoom shorter than desirable; LCD is 2.5; mediocre images above ISO 800; neckstrap (buy a wrist strap!). Very good features: Viewfinder; hot shoe for external flash; full Manual, Program, Aperture, Shutter options; good flash; power on built-in flash power can be reduced +/- 2 EV in 0.3 increments; Matrix, Center and Spot metering; small, lightweight, black, great ergonomically (can one-hand it, good grip); bright and sharp LCD; Function button on camera back can be programmed for quick access to change ISO, Image Quality, Image Size, Continuous, WB, etc; interval timed shots from 30 sec. to 60 mins.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect! Had the P5100 only two weeks; so farI shoot it on programed; can't wait to take time to master the manual programs, but been busy shooting family gatherings, restaurant interiors dining w/friends, theater shots - just plain fun stuff. Auto white balance has been perfect. I compared with my manual white balance settings and can't tell the difference. I like the large moniter. VR must be pretty good; I don't notice any blur. Noise is acceptable for a point and shoot even at ISO 800. 115 page user's manual says this point & shoot will do almost as much as my Fuji S3 Pro and my film Nikons. Only disappointment is terrible shutter lag but I imagine Nikon will soon fix that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Coolpix P5100 is a Winner As a part-time pro photographer I keep this little camera on my belt for all those times when larger gear isn't at hand. Color rendition is excellent and exposure ir right on most of the time. 12mb gives large blow-ups. I haven't tried it at high ISO but up through 400 it is clean. Fully manual exposure on a camera like this is a welcome option and easy to access without going into menus to set it. RAW file would give it the 5th star, as well as a wider zoom range, but for nearly twice the price you can get that with the P6000. Altogether it's a bargain!
