Kodak Portra 400 overview

  • 1Description

Kodak's Professional Portra 400 is a high-speed daylight-balanced color negative film offering a smooth and natural color palette that is balanced with vivid saturation and low contrast for accurate skin tones and consistent results. Utilizing the cinematic VISION Film technology, this film also exhibits a fine grain structure with very high sharpness and edge detail. A micro-structure optimized T-GRAIN emulsion makes it especially well-suited for scanning applications, and advanced development accelerators offer extended versatility when enlarging. This film has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400/27° and is particularly well-suited to portrait and wedding photography, as well as nature, travel, and outdoor shooting with moving subjects, or when the lighting cannot be controlled.

This item is one roll of 120-format roll film.

Kodak Portra 400 reviews

Professional Portra 400 Color Negative Film (120 Roll Film) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 220.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite Kodak film 400NC was a great film while it was being made, but the new Portra 400 is much better. The grain is finer but still attractive in scans--scanning with a Nikon 9000ED. Better than the improved grain is the exposure latitude. You can over expose this film by four stops or underexpose by a full stop, and the images still look great. It also pushes well, which is pretty unusual for a color negative film. I shoot with a Mamiya 7 often and this film is loaded 90% of the time. I just carry around a three-stop ND filter for when I want a wider aperture in full sunlight, but 400 ISO is great for just about all other conditions. Buy this film, keep film alive!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Film Ever. This film is phenomenal. I have been a 160NC user for years but decided to try this 400 speed product based on Kodak's sales and technical publications. The extra speed really helps for hand-held work. Kodak is telling the truth when they say it's the best film ever manufactured. The images scan beautifully -- well within the contrast range of my scanner to get everything on the film. It is somewhat more saturated than the old NC but this is easily adjusted in Lightroom or Camera Raw. Highly recommended. Let's just hope they keep turning this stuff out for the foreseeable future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review of serious Photography Enthusiast This is a review dedicated to amateurs. This is my general on the GO film. I use it after 3-4p.m This film is fast. I use it for every thing. However, I find it more versatile for people. It is rendering of skin tones is superb. Higher ISO allows to catch children or people in action. I use it in conduction with a Gossen Pro F meter. It is accurate. The prints are excellent. I can write many praises to this film. You are as a photographer have to choose your own. For my needs, which are: Landscape, macro, people, automobiles, street it works well, and I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great color film, highest recommendation! I recently returned to film, mainly 6x6 & 6x7. The reason, purely for fun and nostalgia. I gave this film a try because I was a previous Portra NC & VC user (wedding photographer). While I do miss the option of choosing the VC version for extra saturation I found this film to be better overall. The grain of the ISO 400 Portra is better than the older ISO 160 films. It scans very nicely and has accurate colors. It does not have the saturation of Ektar 100 but the extra 2 stops allows me to hand hold telephotos at a safe shutter speed. I'd highly recommend this film.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much improved grain! I shoot this in both 120 and 220 formats, on a Bronica ETR-s and a Mamiya RB67. While I haven't done side-by-side tests, I've compared this to other film stocks using the same camera, and the same lab for scanning. I can say the grain is much less noticeable in the new formulation! It's smaller, and doesn't seem to have random clumps like I've seen in the old Portra (which isn't a huge problem, but 100% viewing reveals it sometimes). I can say this film - shot at the box speed of 400 - compares favorably to Fuji 160S shot at 100, at least as far as grain goes. That's pretty impressive. Nice that I don't have to down-rate my film speed for this either. I have yet to test how it responds to over- and underexposurethe film has been hard to find and I hate to waste a frame!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but ISO is off I really like the tonal range of the film. It's sharp, very low grain, and reproduces skin tones beautifully! My two beefs with this film are as follows. First, I find that this film should be shot at +2/3 stop compensation (ISO 250). Shot at 400, the images seem very dark. The second beef I have with this film is that it doesn't seem to scan as well (color balance wise) as the old 400VC Portra or the fuji films. Overall, it's a great new film, and if you are willing to readjust the way you shoot it, it is really a stunning portrait film! Skin tones are soft and very appealing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good fast film for medium format cameras First of all, I'm not an expert, but I'll share my experience with you: I bought this film to try an antique camera I got recently. The film performed great in low(er) light i.e. sunset or indoors in good light. I made the mistake to buy too fast film for the camera because this old camera needed much lower ISO for daylight photography, (no shutter speed/aperture adjustment) but that is not the film's mistake, that was my dumbness. Even after making this mistake, my pictures were only slightly over exposed. The colours came out great and I can recommend it if you need a fast medium format film. The grain is fine, well I don't have much comparison, but it's MUCH nicer than 35mm so it was fine for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great colors This film works great for the look I want out of my images. A little warmer than Fuji 400h with great skin tones and nice muted colors.
