Olympus 261014B overview

  • 1Description

The Olympus 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ED SWD Zuiko Zoom Lens is a high-performance digital specific standard zoom lens that provides the ideal focal length for general purpose use. It offers an equivalent focal length in 35mm terms of 24-120mm.

The lens' autofocus is powered by Olympus' innovative SWD focusing technology. SWD combines different technologies to provide both high speed and high precision autofocusing, while allowing the lens to be operated with lower noise than before. Optimized for use with the new E-3, this lens enables the camera to demonstrate the full power of its high-speed capability, providing extremely fast focusing.

Special optical glass elements are used to correct various types of aberrations, while the 100% digital design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 9.8" throughout the entire zoom range.

Supersonic Wave Drive Technology
SWD technology has enabled an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet, high-precision AF system. Two compact, high-powered SWD devices power autofocus at an ultra-high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations, while an ultra-compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that's accurate to 5 microns (5/1000 mm). When used in combination with the new E-3, which offers improved AF computation and lens-body communication rates, the SWD motors provide the fastest focusing speed of approximately 170 ms (0.17 seconds).
High Optical Quality
Features 1 Super ED lens element, 2 ED elements, 1 Aspherical ED element, and 2 Aspherical elements, to correct for various types of aberrations.
Internal Focus
Internal Focus system makes focusing smoother and faster.

    Olympus 261014B reviews

12-60mm f/2.8-4 ED SWD Zuiko Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital Cameras is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 119.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all-purpose lens I LOVE this lens. I'm getting in to wedding photography, so I wanted to upgrade my kit wide lens (14-42mm). I ordered it in time to take with us on a family trip to Disney and this lens lived on my E-620 90% of the time. Fast, smooth auto-focus, nice range from 12-60mm lets you get wide enough to get everything and still get in close without having to change lens. There's minimal distortion at 12mm on the edges, but I think that's to be expected with a lens this wide. Overall, this is a great piece of glass and I would actually recommend it over the 50-200mm zoom for its versatility (although if you're like me you'll want both :).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perhaps the best ever in its category I bought this lens together with an E-620 (view separate review). All I have to say is WOW!! The sharpness and color rendition are out of this world. The auto focus is lightning quick. It is a reasonably fast lens. It focuses very close. It is made in JAPAN - makes a big difference in optical quality. Olympus makes excellent digital cameras, but if I had to pick one reason to buy an Olympus DSLR it would be to have access to this absolutely superb lens. This is my first DSLR. For the past ten years I have been shooting with a fully manual Nikon and my primary lens was a Nikon 24-120, exactly the same range as this lens. The Nikon is a great lens, this one is better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Main Lens Just returned from 3-week urban and landscape trip to England, where I made 1000+ exposures with this lens. The 5x zoom served almost all of my needs--from vast church interiors at 12mm, to 60mm shots of signs and people. CU focussing allowed some great flower pix without going to my macro lens. The auto-focus is very fast and quiet. And, at all focal lengths the images are the sharpest from edge to edge of any of my lenses (except my 50mm macro)--greatly superior to kit lenses. I highly recommend this as an all-purpose, walking-around lens; the only dowside is its weight on a neck strap (but to me the results are worth it).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lens I got this lens as an upgrade from the 14-40 kit lens and am extremely happy with it. I've kept it on the camera most of the time in the three weeks since I have got it. The extra width at the near end and extra zoom make it far more useful than the kit lens. It is heavier, but having got used to the 50-200mm first, I didn't find the weight a significant factor at all, and it's certainly worth it for the weatherproofing. It's been really great in our current snowy spell. While I didn't feel that the 50-200mm totally replaced the 40-150 in my bag, I will definitely be selling the 14-40 kit lens as I can't see using it again after having had this one on the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In Search of Excellence This by far is the most versatile workhorse in my stable of several SWD and Standard Zuiko lenses. For a professional wedding photographer this fast focusing lens with its wide focal range combined with a closeup distance down to 24cm at all focal lengths and low light ability is capable of covering an entire wedding event on its own. For the landscape photographer the 12-60mm produces crisp, clear color rich images and suffices for all but extreme wide angle and long telephoto shots. For the portrait photographer the 12-60mm encompasses the traditional focal length of a portrait lens and renders a soft creamy bokeh. For Architectural work the 12-60mm at the short end has obvious advantages for interior low light situations. Sports photographers will appreciate the benefits offered by the this fast focusing lens, especially when used on an E-5 in track focusing or video mode. The construction of this lens with the inclusion of two aspherical elements delivers bright clear viewing through the ELV. In conclusion, this is a stunning all-rounder that is to be recommended to any photographer who seeks no less than excellence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So fast and high resolution lens I bought this lens with E-3, I have never seen so fast Auto focus lens in my life. I tested Canon Nikon, this lens and E-3 are best combination under $2500.00 range. It works with FL-50 flash so well. Expertise: 5 Years Problems Encountered: None to write Items I Recommend: E-3

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing focus speed. Bought this lens to use with my E510, not E3 like the other reviewers thus far. Wasn't sure the focus speed thing would be apparent with this body. Was I ever wrong. So fast the first couple shots I almost thought the camera misfired. Can't quite believe it. Optics are first rate too. Sharp, saturated images are the norm. If this lens actually focuses faster on an E3, it must be in focus before you depress the shutter release.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is why I own Olympus - the lenses Use a lot for photographing art work (2D and 3D) (w/ E3). Own 11-22mm and used for same purpose. 12-60's extra length has come in handy. Presently shooting stain glass windows in a international treasure; St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, in Covington Kentucky. As a rule I use PTlens to correct distortion and find there is little need for correction. 11-22 is a little better as far as distortion (or lack of) but the 12-60 is on the camera more. The only issue is the added focal length in the zoom is a handful of turning. But, sure beats changing lenses. Own the C7070, E510 (two kit lenses), E3, 8mm 11-22mm, 12-60 and a FL50R flash. Plan on purchasing the 50-200 and waiting for a M4/3s bodies. Agian it is the lenses. Owned the C5050, C8080, prior. Olympus' better lenses have never been the problem for Olympus.
