Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

The Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon is a 15x high power zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using the more compact (APS-C) digital size image sensors. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 28-419mm in 35mm format. Designed as an "all-in-one" lens, it will meet almost all photographic opportunities without changing lenses.

The addition of PZD (Piezo Drive) ultrasonic autofocus motor helps make this lens lighter, short and slimmer than any previous lens in this category, and provides faster, quieter auto-focusing.

The VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism allows the use of shutter speeds that are much slower than otherwise possible, with no perceptible increase in image blur. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving object. This feature is a must in a lens with this longer range of focal length.  This lens will focus down to 19.3" (0.49 m) throughout the zoom range.

This lens is designed exclusively for DSLR cameras with smaller-size sensors. It is NOT compatible with 35mm film cameras and DSLR cameras with image sensors larger than 24 x 16mm.

Compact, lightweight 15x zoom lens
For use with Nikon digital SLR cameras
For APS-C image sensor cameras
Vibration Compensation (VC) system is incorporated into the lens
A new level of compactness, performance, and speed is achieved with the addition of PZD (Piezo Drive), an innovative ultrasonic autofocus motor based on an advanced piezoelectric design
Special Glass Optimized for Digital SLR
Three hybrid aspherical lens elements and two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements are used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor to enhance the optical quality in digital photography.
Di-II Series Design
Design has been improved by adding a gold-colored band between the focus and zoom rings to enhance the appearance and make it stand out as a Di II lens. The rubber patterns of the zoom and focus control rings have been improved at the same time to compliment the digital camera design style and to provide better handling.

    Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 229.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good compact lens I recently bought the Tamron 18-270 f/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD for my Nikon D5100. The best feature of this product is its huge zoom range. You will hardly ever need to change lenses. At the same time it is relatively small and light-weight. So this is a great lens to travel with. The photos have nice contrast and sharpness overall. The VC is really superb. However, the only disadvantage is its aperture range, its minimum f-number is only 3.5 and that too at 18mm. So it will not perform very well under low light situations where you need to take fast shots. But considering the price and its other features, this is definitely a great lens to have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good travel lens This is a good general purpose lens for traveling light with a single lens that covers a wide range of focal lengths. It is not a perfect lens for every use, but it's perfect for its intended use, which is general photography with light gear. The images are sharp and have good contrast. The image stabilization works very well. This lens will not replace my prime lenses or constant aperture zooms, but I'll be comfortable taking it on a trip as my main lens along with a 50mm F1.8 prime.AF speed is okay with the Nikon D300, but not great. Since the lens is for a DX size sensor, I didn't try it on the D800.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 'walk around' Purchased this lens about a month ago for a trip to NY & Boston and didn't want to take 2-3 other lenses (no way I wanted to carry that much around all day everyday for 7 days). So far, still getting used to this lens - there is a moment/minisecond before the shutter can be pressed with manual or auto focus with this lens - getting used to that. But, for my purposes, this lens is working out to be a good 'walk around' lens for me as I am still teaching myself photography. I was also able to get a $100 rebate with my purchase that was processed within a week of sending in the information. Transaction with B&H was great as always and while I was in NY, I did visit the store - awesome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this lens so far! I'm a photo enthusiast, not a professional, but I appreciate fantastic results. I've only had the lens a few days, but so far, I'm in love with it. I took it on a camping trip and bragged to all the Girl Scout moms about the great shots I could get of the girls on the lake, at the rock wall, across the field, etc. The shots are clear and ready to print. It did add some weight to my camera, but that is a small price to pay for what I got in return -- from close up to far away, I'm happy to see the shot I want perfectly framed and quickly focused. I'm seriously happy, but will update if I have anything negative to report.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected Excellent all around lens for varying use. I am impressed with the photo quality especially for the price. Decent low light performance for a bigger lens. We have put to use inside a school auditorium where lighting was poor, outdoors for prom pictures which were excellent, and outdoors for nature. It also was superb at video where I no longer need to choose a wider angle lens or zoom. The auto focus works better then my old eye but can slow down the cameras shutter if the subject is moving or changing, the manual focus switch is easily used to eliminate the problem as long as the subject isn't moving to much. Super lens for everyday use and then some!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic all-purpose lens I purchased this lens for my Nikon DSLR as an all-purpose walk around lens. I liked the idea of one lens that ranges from wide to telephoto for a modest price, and I'm certainly not disappointed. The focus speed is great and the images I'm getting are clear and sharp. I love being able to go from very wide to long zoom in just seconds with no lens swapping. The build quality feels tight and strong. My only other lens was the kit 18-55 and by comparison this Tamron feels great. The only drawback I've found, and a minor one, is that the lens hood is a little flimsy. It's tricky to get mounted to line up the notches and twist into place. Not huge, just a little annoying.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SO FAR, SO VERY GOOD! Husband, Thomas made the purchase of the Tamron AF18-270 lens after I decided it was the birthday gift of choice based on the recommendation of a friend whose own photography is part of a professional portfolio. I am a Public Affairs Officer for the Civil Air Patrol and the lens came just in time to photograph 8 days of the first of two Regional August Glider Academies held in Vermont. The previous 3 years required switching of lenses from 18-55 to 55-200 zoom to get the effects I wanted on the ground then in the air, losing great shots and angles in the process. This lens is a keeper. Photos sent out have received rave reviews for composition. I have noted some slow focusing intermittently, but not enough of a problem reduce my enthusiasm for this product. It SOARS!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Great Tamron Lens I love my new Tamron 18-270mm lens. It gives me the versatility to use it for whatever I am shooting. This morning I stepped out on my patio and there was a red shoulder hawk sitting a tree near my back fence. He was being dive bombed by smaller birds whose nest was close. At 270mm, I got several great shots. That is in contrast to being able to take pictures of my 11 month old granddaughter doing what she ought not. Same lens. This is my third Tamron lens and they have all been the best quality, most versatile, and easiest to use for the time they were bought. I have used them on Nikon N70's, D70's and now a D7000. Love 'em!
