Olympus 260116B overview

  • 1Description

The Olympus FL-50R Flash is a fully-featured and powerful shoe mount flash that also offers wireless flash operation. Control is possible directly from the camera without the need for cables. This flash unit is the ideal accompaniment to the Olympus E-3, which features a newly-developed RC Data Transfer System that transmits data optically. This significantly reduces the power consumption of the built-in flash when being used as the system commander. Flash control is available in three groups, allowing flash mode and compensation settings to be set independently for each group - thus enabling ultra-precise illumination. Four remote control communication channels can be set by the user to avoid interference with other peripherals in the vicinity.

The FL-50R flash offers all the features a professional wants to produce professional-caliber results. Along with the standard bounce and swivel capability, power zoom and a full range of TTL Automatic, Automatic and Manual flash modes, the FL-50R offers the Super FP Mode. This allows for flash sync at speeds up to 1/4000th second so fill-flash can be used in the brightest of situations. This is achieved by the flash's ability to fire before the shutter opens and stay illuminated until after the shutter closes. Designed specifically for digital photography, the FL-50R flash also has more even illumination with less corner fall-off than traditional film flashes.

Super FP Mode
The Super FP Mode allows for flash sync at speeds up to 1/4000th second so fill-flash can be used in the brightest of situations.
AF Illuminator

Illuminated LCD Display
The illuminated Flash Control LCD makes it easy to see what the flash settings are in a low light environment

Olympus 260116B reviews

FL-50R Flash is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Flash ! I have used a FL-50 for several years and with an E-520 on order, and the Olympus in$tant rebate, I thought it a good time to pick up a second flash since I have been so satisfied with the FL-50. You can almost never have too much flash power, and the FL-50R is a great size flash for the output it provides. I always use Lithium batteries for the fast recycle times and the great battery power to weight ratio. I will probably always have two dSLR bodies and it is useful to have a second flash for times when someone cons me into taking wedding or graduation pictures. It is a good flash purchased from a company I have delt with plesantly for many, many years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product and good price I was not very happy with the performance of the FL-36 I've owned for three years. The recycling time was too long, the power just right, but the worst thing was that the light angle was not wide enough to cover the whole field so that it was a band under exposed specially at the bottom edge of the frame. The FL-50 solve this problem and shows no vigneting. It has more power, faster recycling and can be used as slave althought the camera body doesnt have wireless control. It tends to leave the picture under exposed if there is a mirror or white background, but not as much as his little brother does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful, fast and high quality I bought FL-50R as a step up from the FL-36 which I have owned for three years. Comparing the two, the FL-50R is bigger, more powerful and most importantly, recharges faster. Of course, it comes at twice the price of the FL-36 which is a very good flash on its own. The FL-50R comes with a couple of very useful accessories, such as a foot stand which can be mounted on a tripod. The flash is very easy to use and it gives me a more 'professional' look when I carry it on my E-510. Hovewer, it is heavy and I can't carry the camera hanging from my neck for too long. In the end, however, I am more than satisfied with the FL-50R.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great flash Great flash when used with the E-3. Wireless works very, very well and can be completely out of sight and still work.Well worth the money to get the R version over the regular FL-50. I have both and they perform identical. But the wireless is so nice to have.Recycle time is Excellent using Eneloop batteries. I shot over 1000 flash pictures at a wedding recently and never had any recycle delays. (Actually, I had to buy this flash just for the wedding)...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of gear I used this on an engagement shoot outdoors about a week after I got it. Very good exposure control. I used a shoot-thru umbrella, minus 1.3 EC to fill shadows and light quality was fantastic. The only downside is that the flash can't wireleslly tell the camera that its recharged, so you have to pay careful attention to the ready lights (blinking on the front of the flash or the solid yellow light on the back of the flash). Otherwise, you could have some problems with exposure or ghosting if the flash isn't fully charged.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Flash Rocks! Already owning the smaller Fl-36 I had a hard time finally going for the Fl-50r. One test shot with the Fl-50r was enough to vaporize all doubts I had. The Fl-50r is powerful, precise and the picture was just making me very happy. In addition to being attached to the camera, the Fl-50r can be used wirelessly with the Olympus E-3 (and newer Olympus DSLRs I assume), or as a slave. Using a hotshoe extension cable, I connect the Fl-36 to the camera and the fl-50r is triggered by the Fl-36. It works like a breeze. The Fl-50r will expand your versatility (when it comes to lighting) to a great extend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LOVE this flash! When I got my first DSLR, I cheaped out and got a knockoff flash. It was fine for what it did, but I always felt that my flash pictures weren't that good. I broke down and got the FL-50R and couldn't be happier. My flash pictures now look natural and I find myself using the flash for fill instead of adjusting my settings. One of the best features is the ability to compensate how much light is output. I use this feature all the time. I was torn between the FL-50R and the FL-36R, but opted for the 50 because it had a faster recycle time. If this isn't an issue for you, then you may be able to save a few bucks and get the 36R. If you're an Oly shooter, then I feel like this flash is a must!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes flash photography so flexible After attending a Joe McNally course on flash photography I needed to try it using TTL metering. These units make it easy and being able to control the power from the camera is wonderful. I no longer have to lug around mono lights for most of my sessions. The sensor will pick up the signal bounced off walls so you don't need direct line-of-sight for them to work. Oh, by the way, they work great as slaves for hair light or for kickers.
