Bolt VM-160 Reviews

nice light, but no case

I needed a light ring for occasional macro use and modest facial fill. The product works well enough, but uses plastic filter covers for color temperature instead of two LED colors and a blending control, which seems a little antiquated. It does not come with an an AC adapter option or any kind of a case, which is a bit of a shortcoming. On the positive side, it is adaptable to a wide range of lens diameters and is otherwise convenient to use. Instructions do mention that it is best used with non-rotating auto-focus lenses, so youv'e been warned there.

poorly made

In the pictures and at first glance, this looked like an adequate accessory. However, the build quality is poor. The first time I installed it on my Canon R, the mounting shoe jammed in the camera's hot shoe. No electrical contact was made, the light would not function and it could not be removed. Find yourself another light. Don't buy this one.

A handy little light for shooting close up

I got a good price on this on Deal Zone. I feel it is well worth that price. It works pretty well, but it does not allow one to light each half of it circle at different settings, which would allow for more pleasing images than the ways it does work. Of course, one can put his camera on a tripod and aim the light, unattached to the lens, hand held, but shooting from one side of front-on can create darker shadows on the off side than one might want. I have chosen to use Eneloop rechargeable batteries in my copy, since I have found that they last a long time and don't corrode their contacts, should I forget to charge them until after they have gone dead.

Almost perfect

Im really liking this light , only issue I've had is if your keeping the light on for a few mins it kills the batteries very fast even at a dimmer setting, but doing just flash last a lot longer Of course.. this was tested with the longer lasting energizer batteries

I love taking macro shots indoors and out of almost everything, for selling stuff on ebay or taking shots of plants, flowers. Works for me and easy to use

More than acceptable for the price

I purchased the Bold VM-160 because I have always wanted a macro ring light but never felt the cost of a flash ring light was justified (this item frequently goes on sale). The effect is very acceptable, if you can live with the 1/2 second flash of the LEDs by using higher ISOs and shorter shutter speeds when subject motion is an issue; the unit seems acceptably bright. For this price, don't expect the filter thread adapters to be made of titanium; the plastic adapters can deform enough to pop off your lens if you aren't careful. The unit can be set to disable half of the ring's LEDs for greater texture rendering, but at least one reviewer that complained the effect was too stark. I simply cut a half donut out of 20 lb copy paper and inserted it behind the diffuser - it did an amazing job of softening the shadows. The 20 lb paper has an effective 2-stop ND effect. You can feather the ends of your half-donut to further soften the effect while still retaining texture in your photos, or you can use 2 pieces of paper to increase the shadows. I submitted 3 photos to demonstrate the varying effect.

Fun Idea. Not helpful in practice

While this is a fun idea, you can see the ring in your images. Not great for the pics. Too bad.

question

How would this compare to Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Bolt VM-160 is an led macro light and the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash USA, http://bhpho.to/1wyhjeK, is a flash macro light. The canon works in TTL or manual on Canon cameras and it freezes motion much better and is much brighter. The Bolt LED bulbs do flash but LED lights do not flash like a strobe lights. But you can use that one as a flash or continuous.

The Bolt VM-160 LED Macro Ring Light, B&H # BOVM160, may be used on the Sony Alpha a9 Mirrorless Digital Camera. Do note that the Bolt VM-160 LED Macro Ring Light is a manual LED light, so you would set the light output manually.

The flash is compatible with the D750 and the unit comes with adapter rings for different size filter threads of lenses. Check to see that your lenses' filter thread matches the adapter ring sizes that are included.

Will autofocus work with the light attached?
Asked by: Dave
Yes, autofocus will work. I’ve used it on 2 Canon DSLRs with several lenses without issue. The only potential problem I can think of is if you were to use it on a variable focal length lens where the front of the lens rotates when zooming in or out. You can easily check that. Overall it’s a nice unit that comes with useful accessories.

My Q is for users of this unit - is it normal for the buttons to be intermittent in their operation i.e. you have to play around with them in order to get them to respond - all my buttons work just not on the 1st touch - is this normal?
Asked by: richard
This does happen quite frequently with these units unfortunately. The buttons wear out rather quickly.
