Canon 3806B012AA overview

  • 1Description

For amateur who are not versed in the technical side of lighting or more advanced users who want a compact yet powerful hotshoe flash, the Canon Speedlite 270EX is versatile and portable without being complicated.

The flash head bounces and has two-steps for different focal lengths. It makes use of just two AA batteries which adds to the minimal impact it has on camera bag cargo space.

The flash supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II. This is great for photographers that shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography.

The Speedlite 270EX flash is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II (Evaluative Through The Lens) auto exposure technology. When combined with a compatible Canon camera (EOS-1D/s Mark II, Mark III, D-20, Elan 7N/E, or newer models) and compatible lens, E-TTL II utilizes subject distance and other information that automatically modifies flash power, resulting in accurate flash exposure regardless of subject size, reflectance, or photographic composition.
Flash exposure modes: E-TTL II and E-TTL.
Bounce feature provides greater range of picture-taking options with 60°, 75°, and 90° settings.
Compact, lightweight design - ideal for compact PowerShot cameras (G-series and select SX-series) and EOS Rebel class cameras.
Built-in AF-assist beam compatible with EOS multi-point AF systems including 45-point Area AF types
Optimized recycling time (approx. 0.1 to 3.9 seconds.)

    Canon 3806B012AA reviews

Speedlite 270EX Flash is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 238.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Compact Flash for Canon This is an exceptionally compact flash which is lightweight and easily fits in a pocket. Images produced with this flash are substantially better than what can be achieved with any pop-up, built in flash. It is more powerful, sits higher, has bounce capability and recycles very quickly. It is especially good on the Digital Rebel and 50D cameras. Perfect for travel where you don't want to carry a larger flash but don't want to suffer with the harsh light, red eye and inadequate power of a pop-up. Very easy for a novice to use and flexible enough for serious amateurs. If you can't carry the much heavier and much larger shoe mount flashes, this is the best compact alternative.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great accessory to G11 I am an amateur photographer that uses my camera on vacations and travel. I selected 4 stars since it seems expensive though it works well. I first used this strobe at the Air Force museum which is quite dark inside. The strobe really helped as the planes are large and sometimes far away. The strobe really was easy to use (point and shoot) and easy to carry. The zoom setting helped for the far shots. I haven't used it in the bounce position so can't comment. I thought the lack of controls would be a problem since my last strobe (many years ago) had them. Since it is controlled by the camera settings it was fine. I am happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great little flash!!! I purchased a G10 in Dec 09 and found that the 580EX and 430EX flashes were just to big and awkward for it. The built in flash is just horrible so I was in a quandary. The 270EX is just perfect and is well balanced on my G10 and even looks proportionate. The flash provides for consistant exposures in the Av mode. It is easily and fully controllable, from the cameras function menu, while shooting in the Manual mode. The bounce feature is what makes this flash truly remarkable. It deserves a 6 star ratiing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like a whole new camera It's pretty clear that the flash built into the G12 is intended as an emergency auxiliary fill flash for a fairly narrow set of circumstances. It tends to make portraits look harsh, blows highlights consistently, and pretty much guarantees red eye. That's where the Speedlite 270EX comes in. It's the perfect companion for the G12. It's lightweight, by virtue of taking only two AA batteries, so it won't make your G12 top-heavy. The flash tilts upward so that light can be bounced off a ceiling. Indirect lighting does an amazing job of making the light look more natural. I'll also mention that the 270EX looks great sitting on top of a G12.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for a 5D I wanted the smallest, relatively well build, and well performing flash to walk around with when I'm not working. The 580EXII is great, but hardly convenient to carry. This little guy will do a great job for that purpose. Add a 24-105 or 28-135 to your 5D and your good for most situations. Flash fits in my Lowpro TLZ 1 bag side pocket with much room to spare for extra batteries and accessories. No one suspects a 21MP full frame beast with an external flash inside. Awesome! I knocked out a few indoor sports portfolio shots with this setup without any unwanted attention.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great lil thing that goes where i go i own a 580EX but I found that too big to be attached to the camera when I go out and about so I was searching for something smaller. now this little thing is pretty much permanetnly attached to my 20D and worked great as a bounce flash. this lil thing is light weight, well priced and work just as described. there is no buttons to mes with and it just bounced in many different ways, much more verstile than the built-in flash on the camera. highly recommended for someone who is looking for a flahs just as a quick fill-flash. the only thing I wishd it can do is turn sideways so I can compose my pictures anyway I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A necessary upgrade over built-in flash This is a huge improvement over the built-in flash in my Xsi. I try to use a flash as little as possible, but sometimes it's unavoidable. In those cases, setting the 270 for bounce with a diffuser actually makes for decent shots. Sure, it would be nice to swivel the flash when the camera is rotated, but for the money, I like this automatic unit (There is only an off/on switch). The shoe is metal and solid, so no complaints there. More capability and control than this means paying a lot more, at least for a Canon flash, so this is a good price point. If you really need more, then you're probably already considering things like slave units and so on and wouldn't be looking at something in this range to begin with. As a plus, it runs on only two AA's, so it isn't very bulky. Overall, I've found it to be a nice compromise between price and capability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Serious lighting for fun shooting! I use the 270EX on my Canon SX120. It completes a great walk around outfit for casual shooting. It also allows me to shoot more candidly than with my (2)Canon 5D, which are heavy and sometimes imposing. It gives me much more light control than the pop up flash on the SX120 with tilt & telescopic features. The fact that it is so compact and lightweight is a big plus. I pack a table tripod, the 270EX, the SX120 in a small bag, the whole outfit weighs less than my 5D with a 28-80 L series attached. It may not power up as fast a 430 of 580, but whatever I'm shooting with it usually won't be that critical. Using the 270EX, I am confident that I'll get a quality picture, no matter what.
