Sony HDR-CX110 overview

  • 1Description

Sony's HDR-CX110 Handycam Camcorder is an entry level high definition camera that captures 1920 x 1080 video and 3MP digital stills to flash memory. Choose to record to optional Memory Stick media, or to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. Either way you'll have the ease of flash memory for recording, storage, and transfer of all your video and still images.

Other core features of the CX110 include the 1/4" back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode, a 2.7" LCD screen, and 25x optical zoom. The back-illuminated sensor provides you with improved image capture in low light settings over previous Sony Exmor R sensors. Working along with the sensor, the BIONZ Image Processor provides faster response times and reduces visual noise. The Vario-Tessar lens brings the quality of Carl Zeiss optics to the table, while providing Sony's SteadyShot stabilization which cuts down on blur caused by motion, or camera shake, while the Active Mode enables the camera to compensate for even greater degrees of camera shake. The 2.7" LCD screen provides you with touch panel convenience and 270 degrees of rotation. And the camera's 25x optical zoom brings far off subjects in focus with clarity and detail.

In addition to the nuts and bolts of the HDR-CX110 Sony packed this camera with a number of other convenience and workflow features that are designed to make your recording experience a more user-friendly one. Functions like Face Detection, Face Index, Film Roll Index, and Smile Shutter are just the beginning of the myriad of useful features. Others include the ability to personalize the menu system to the functions you use most, called, "My Menu", Sony's Dual Record with still image capture, and automatic Power On when you open the LCD display. BRAVIA Sync technology, One Touch Disc Burn, 1080/60p playback via HDMI, among others, all help you make the most of your recording from start to finish.

1920 x 1080 High Definition Video Recording
1920 x 1080 high definition resolution lets you record your videos in the versatile MPEG4 AVC/H.264 format
Record to MemoryStick Media or SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards
The HDR-CX110 records exclusively to removable flash memory media. Choose to record to Sony's Memory Stick Media, including Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, or Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo media, or to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (media not included)
1/4" Back-Illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS Sensor
Experience low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with the back-illuminated "Exmor R" sensor. Designed for compact cameras and camcorders, the "Exmor R" sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, maximizing the light gathering area per pixel so you can shoot with better results in lower lighting conditions 1
Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens
Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lenses use advanced optics to deliver vivid image brilliance, and true-to-life color saturation and renditions of subtle tones
25x Optical / 300x Digital Zoom
25x optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, Digital Zoom Interpolation means that digital zooming (up to 300x) is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom
2.7" Clear Photo LCD Display
The 2.7" Clear Photo LCD (230K) display provides exceptional viewing clarity with 123K pixels resolution. The display rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles, as well as provides sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback. The convenient touch panel allows easy access to menus and additional functionality such as spot focus and spot metering
3MP Digital Still Image Capture
The HDR-CX110's 3 megapixel still image capture lets you take high resolution digital photos
SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode represents the next step forward in Sony image stabilization technology. Active Mode improves on existing SteadyShot image stabilization by allowing the camera to compensate for greater degrees of camera shake and deliver a stunning level of image smoothness
2x Faster Quick AF
With the improved autofocus (AF) system, Quick AF, the focusing speed is twice as fast compared to previous models. Whether in bright daylight or in a dimly lit environment, Quick AF ensures fast, accurate, and consistent focus lock, enabling users to shoot in a wide range of scenes without missing any important moment. Especially when shooting night scenes where conventional AF might struggle to focus, thanks to the much improved AF algorithm in Quick AF, users can now capture crisp images, fast
1080/60p Playback Via HDMI and Compatible HDTV
1080/60p playback via HDMI and compatible HDTV providing stunning clarity and incredibly detailed playback of your memories
Face Detection with Touch Priority
With Face Priority, your camcorder optimizes focus, color, exposure, and Smile Shutter technology for the face you prioritize. Just touch the preferred face on the LCD display and the camcorder will assign it priority, even if it leaves and returns to the frame
Smile Shutter for Still and Dual Capture
Smile Shutter technology lets the camcorder automatically take still photos when your subject smiles, even while shooting high definition video. You can also set the sensitivity and choose child, adult, or auto priority
Direct Copy to External HDD without a PC
Store your memories in a whole new way with the ability to copy videos from your camcorder directly to an external hard disk drive (optional), all without a computer. Your camcorder can also access videos stored on the external hard drive for playback on your HDTV, allowing you to utilize the camcorder's handy playback features
Highlight Playback with Highlight Scenario Playback
With Highlight Playback, your camcorder automatically creates short movies by identifying and compiling key scenes into a short, entertaining movie complete with music and transitions. In addition, the Highlight Scenario feature lets you save up to eight of these movies for later playback
Intelligent Auto (9 iAUTO Modes)
Intelligent Auto mode goes a step beyond traditional auto modes by analyzing your shot and then automatically selecting the appropriate settings from nine distinct scene modes (60 different combinations possible): Portrait Mode, Smile Shutter, Backlight Control, Scenery, Night Scenery Mode, High Sensitivity Mode, Macro Mode, Baby Mode, Tripod, and Low Light Mode
Personalized "My Menu" System
New user friendly interface uses touch screen technology to allow users to scroll through menus quickly and easily and even create a personalized "My Menu" to bring together the functions they use most. Users can spend more time recording memories and less time in menus
Dual Record with Still Image Capture
Dual record capability lets you capture 3MP still images while shooting high definition video, so you can capture those special moments without having to switch recording modes
Face Index Function
Face Index makes it easy to find and play back the right video scene. Using Face Detection technology, Face Index indexes your video footage according to the faces detected in each scene. When it's time to play back video, simply search for what you want by selecting from among the detected faces displayed in the index
Film Roll Index
Like chapters in a book, Film Roll Index helps you easily find desired scenes in video footage. When using this feature, the camcorder previews the beginning of scenes and can create scene indexes set at specified display intervals (3, 6, or 12 seconds and 1 or 5 minutes)
Sony PMB (Picture Motion Browser) Software
Sony Picture Motion Browser software offers a simple, intuitive way to transfer, sort, and view your video and still images on your compatible PC. In addition, multiple output options let you burn your memories to DVD (optional), as well as take advantage of one click upload to a number of popular video and photo sharing sites
Smooth Slow Record
The Smooth Slow Record mode increases the record rate from 60 frames per second (fps) to 240 fps, allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. This is a great tool for analyzing a golf swing or a viewing a bird in flight. In addition, you record an audio track to narrate the video footage
x.v. Color Technology
x.v. Color technology enables the HDR-CX110 to capture nearly twice (1.8x) as many viewable colors as the standard RGB color range, resulting in more natural, life-like images. You can even experience this expanded color range on the big screen when you connect your camcorder to x.v. Color capable displays, including a wide range of Sony BRAVIA HDTVs
BIONZ Image Processor
The BIONZ Image Processor works in conjunction with the Exmor CMOS sensor with ClearVid array for pristine imaging. The BIONZ Image Processor provides Data Noise Reduction, Fast Image processing, and Data compression to preserve videos and images. In addition, the BIONZ Image Processor enables Face Detection technology and Sony's Dynamic Range Optimizer for both video and still image capture. The higher processing speed also allows Dual Recording to capture still images while recording video
Dynamic Range Optimizer
The D-Range (Dynamic Range) Optimizer function adjusts the exposure and contrast of an image to counter the effects of high-contrast shooting condition, allowing for a great shot. The D-Range Optimizer suppresses "blackout" in dark areas such as shadows and "whiteout" in bright areas such as skies. As a result, the captured image appears as natural as the original scene
BRAVIA Sync Technology
BRAVIA Sync technology offers great ease of use in controlling compatible Sony products connected via an HDMI (CEC) connection. HDMI connectivity provides a simple; high-quality video and audio connection, with the ability to transmit HD video and up to 5.1 channel audio directly from the camcorder to compatible HDTVs via a single HDMI cable, (not included). With BRAVIA Sync (CEC) technology, the HDMI connection also delivers the ability to control both the camcorder and HDTV using a single BRAVIA TV remote and displays the camcorder's playback menu on screen for easier navigation
HDMI Connection Output
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as a compatible camcorder, Blu-ray Disc player, a personal computer, a video game console, or an AV receiver to a compatible digital audio device and/or video monitor such as a digital television (DTV)
Additional Creative Control and Workflow Features
  • Power on your camcorder by simply opening the camera's LCD display
  • USB 2.0 provides an easy connection between your camcorder and PC for fast transfer of video and stills

    Sony HDR-CX110 reviews

HDR-CX110 HD Handycam Camcorder (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement for our old Handycam We are a busy family and take to many videos, but we love the memories. We have owned a Sony Handycam forever and when it was time to replace the old unit, it was easy to look at Sony again. However, I did complete a detailed and lenghthy process of comparing the competition and in the end Sony won our business. We love the small size, long batter life and ease of use. We purchased two 16gb memory cards and an extra battery..will not run out of video storage or battery life. We did not get the hard drive unit as not needed with easy down load to your computer or burn directly to a dvd...great camera for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little (very little) camera This is the first video camera that I've owned. The video quality is fantastic. Sony packs a lot into this camera. I'm using the camera for an interview based documentary project. The sound quality is more than adequate for what I'm doing. Make sure to set your camera to the highest video setting to get the most out of the sensor. Low light recording gets grainy, but the camera has a setting for low light which clears up the footage. The camera is VERY small. I was surprised at the size when it came in the mail. If you have big hands, it may be a bit awkward to navigate the controls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Investment The compact size of the camcorder makes it easy to take along with you without being to bulky and providing quick and easy operation in seconds. This was certainly the case recently when we were able to get GREAT video of a moose on a snowmobile trail in NH at night time. I was amazed at the quality of the video when reviewed after downloading the files with such low lighting and being so stable while riding the snowmobile at the same time.. I zoomed in on an unknown distant mountain range landscape structure and I was able to clearly identify it after downloading as a fire tower without question. All the buttons and touch screen functions are easy to use and understand. Also, the still camera feature seems way better quality than a 3.1. The microphone in this unit seems to be all I need for my use. I am very satisfied with this camera and purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need more time! I researched camcorders for quite a while before buying this one. I already have a high-def camcorder that I love, but it does not take good videos in lower light conditions. I wanted something that took great low-light videos. I have not had a chance to put it through its paces yet. I have not tested the sound or zoom yet. But, from the limited testing that I've done so far in low light conditions, it has not disappointed me. I will know more after the holidays, as I will be taking many many videos over the holidays. I have not tested long enough to run down the battery, so I can not comment on battery life either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More Bang for the Buck This camera was not a gift. I use this camcorder primarily for outdoor sports video. The primary reasons that I purchased this camcorder was size and its hi definition capabilities. Size was important because I use it as a helmet cam for cross country ATV riding. The Hi Definition is to keep up with the current technology in my videos. I was surprised at the vast array of settings that are in this camcorder and with a 32Gb media card (purchased separately), it will video for enormous amounts of time. I chose this Sony Camcorder because it has great low light capabilities with the spotlight setting and really meets my needs for night trail rides. The only down side is the lack of a mic attachment but the camera's mic system does an above average job for what I use it for. I have looked at many camcorders and many other options but this offers on site review where others can only be reviewed upon computer download. After familiarizing myself to the many setting options, I find this camcorder very easy to use and in my opinion, you'll get more bang for your buck with this camcorder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Camcorder The video and sound quality turned out quite good. Compare with the Canon VIXIA HF R200 this Sony camcorder is better and got a lot more features. Really like the dual catch to get photo automatically taken when people smile. Love the slow motion, too, but wish it can take more than 3 seconds, it's too short. Also like to have higher resolution for the stills it's only 3 MP. All Sony camcorders allow to use a bigger battery that's a must feature. As the Canon puts the battery in a fixed space which can only allow a small one lasts only about 1 hour that's really useless. I have returned the Canon and got this. I love the small size, very easy to bring for any occasions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from surprisingly good Our first dedicated camcorder in several years, the Sony HDR-CX110 is far better than I expected for the price. We have it mounted to a Manfrotto tripod with 342RC2 head, and have found it convenient and easy to use to preserve the baby's first roll-over, coo, burble, what-not. The video it captures is vivid, sharp, and smooth, and the audio sounds quite good, though with a bit of noise from the zoom function. Of note: low-light performance exceeds what I'd hoped for this level of gear; we have been able to get usable video of the baby with a single living room light, late into the darkest new england evening. The video format it uses -- AVCHD or something -- is new to me (though, with mixed opinions, well-established in the consumer video market). Bit of a pain to have to convert from camera format to something the Mac can use with an iMovie conversion step; I'm accustomed to being able to grab mp2 and mp4 movies from a removable card with other cameras. Nonetheless, it's certainly a format that's miserly with storage media. Would recommend this camera to anyone looking for something easy to use, that captures great video, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great image, so-so otherwise I love the image this camera gives, it is bright, clean and very HD. And if all you need to do is take video footage this is the camera for you. If on the other hand, you would like to easily delete video from the camera, check to see if you have already downloaded a clip, you will need to slog through a 'touch screen' that is pages and pages long. You can create a screen of frequently used items from the scroll down, but good luck trying to intuit how to do that while reading the manual and scrolling through all the options available to you. It is probably a good thing that this camera is no longer available.
