B+W MRC 106M ND Filter (77mm, 6-Stop)
Key Features
  • 1.8 Optical Density
  • MRC Multi-Resistant Coating
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Allows Reduced Shutter Speed
The 77mm B+W MRC 106M ND 1.8 Filter is a neutral density filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing the aperture or slowing your exposure time, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

B+W 106M Overview

The 77mm B+W MRC 106M ND 1.8 Filter is a neutral density filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing the aperture or slowing your exposure time, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Excellent ND filter for the serious landscape photogrpaher

Does the job, and is easy to clean (the biggest reason I like B+W filters). Hoya, Tiffen and cheap filters are harder to clean. Cheap filters also create odd flares, etc. I've never had a problem with B+W filters (have a CPL as well that I'm happy with from B+W). Would strongly recommend this filter for any landscape/outdoor photographer if you want to give your photos some drama (particularly with clouds, water/waterfalls, or anything you want to have the silky look). They are bit more expensive, but worth every penny, because they use brass rings, and high-quality materials in their construction. You get what you pay for.

Supper upgrade to the variable ND

I had purchase a variable ND filter some time ago. I found the X patterns prohibited the use and higher density that was advertised. I then tried the 10 stop ND filter in this same series. It really does an outstanding job, but is too dark to focus. This 6 stop ND filter is perfect! It is an extremely dark filter providing the longer exposure time I was looking for, while allowing just enough light to focus. (If its a cloudy day, I can go back to 2 - 3 stops) I found this very useful and contrast and color are excellent. This and a polarizer are the only filters I now carry. Highly recommended.

I have always had good results with B&W filters. I got this to get that silky water effect on landscape shots and it did the trick.

question

Is the MRC worth the additional investment? I do have the 10 Stop MRC and 1 single coated 3 stop both are great.
Asked by: TERRY B.
I can only comment that I bought a B+W ND filter to replace a Hoya that had very quickly become damaged by exposure to (I believe) salt spray. The Hoya ND coating was not slick to a cotton cloth, and was, to my experience, not durable at all. The B+W seems to be better constructed.
