The B+W 77mm SC 106 ND 1.8 Filter is a neutral density filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

B+W SC 106 Overview

The B+W 77mm SC 106 ND 1.8 Filter is a neutral density filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Quality filter, but not truly neutral

I've used this ND filter for a little more than 3 years now for landscape photography. It has a spot in my everyday camera bag. It has good optical quality - I've never noticed any decrease in sharpness with it on any of my lenses. Functionally it is high quality and is easy to screw on and off my lenses and step-up rings. Note that on very wide-angle lenses (for example, the Canon ef-s 10-18mm ) with a step-up ring it can cause vignetting at the widest focal length - not unexpected as it isn't a low-profile filter. Do be aware, however, it isn't truly neutral in terms of color - it definitely has a warm cast to it. It's not something that's a major issue for me - it's easy to adjust in post if need be and honestly I usually prefer my images on the warmer side - but just be aware that if you're going for color accuracy, you'll need to do a little work on your image if you're trying to match it to an image that doesn't have this filter on it.

Get the job done for long exposure. I do not notice color cast.

It's the real deal

B & W is a brand I've come to trust. I've purchased cheaper filters in the past and I've never been completely satisfied with the results. Cheaper just makes it cheaper.

That gear definitely worth its money, providing shallow depth of field in a bright sunny day. Perfect quality.

Great color fidelity, solid build

Having never purchased an ND filter before but seeing all of the articles and videos about filters' color cast and the unreliability from one brand to the next, I wasn't sure what to expect. Having now used this filter in an variety of light settings, I can this is an outstanding product. Color fidelity is great and it feels very solidly built. When I buy ND filters in the future, they will be B+W.

HUGE color shift

So this ND filter works as advertised in darkening the image. It seems solidly built. However, it is advertised as not affecting the color of your image and that is HUGE load of bull. There is a very strong orange shift in color by putting this on. You can just look through it with your eye and see it. I use Sony cams and I have to shift the color grid to B4 (as in blue-4) just to compensate. In terms of Kelvin color temperature, I'd estimate that's at least 1000K or more color shift down you'd have to do in order to compensate for the orange.

question

Why does the stock photo, depicting 'Without Filter' and'With Filter', show quite a corruption of the color with filter?
Asked by: Kal
No idea, I bought one of these, and it seems to be neutral density. I notice that colors saturate more with long exposures, but the color are true.

question

This filter does not seem to be coated to reduce flares and ghosting. Has anybody had these issue flare up?
Asked by: Ron S.
I purchased one of these filters about a year ago and have found it excellent my my uses. I haven't had any issues with ghosting /flaring. I think this shade of filter is ideal, I often use it in combination with a circular polariser also from B&W on a Canon 16-35mmf4L for seascapes in relatively bright light. If you are going to combine filters make sure to get some plastic filter wrenches as they can bind.together a bit
