The B+W 40.5mm Circular Polarizer SC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention. This filter is vacuum coated with 1 layer of anti-reflection coating per side to help prevent internal ghosting and reflections as well as improve light transmission.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Features a single anti-reflection coating per side to help prevent ghosting and reflections as well as increase light transmission from approximately 92% (uncoated glass) to over 98%.
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter to Have As soon as this filter arrived in the mail which was only about two days after I bought it (B&H doesn't waste time processing orders) I had to do the classic cloud shot with and without the polarizer. It was a perfect blue sky white cloud late spring day for it too. I don't know why I never thought of getting a polarizing filter before. I haven't used one of these since shooting color slide film which as you might imagine was quite a while ago. Polarizers are pretty useless with commercially developed print film but one of the many advantages of digital photography is that it behaves a lot like slide film. The only caveat with using the polarizing filter and I'm sure this would probably apply to most other brands as well is that it shouldn't be mounted too tight to the lens since the mounting ring is very slim and is a bit difficult to grasp and unscrew it. At the same time it needs to be snug enough to allow for rotation of the polarizer itself without inadvertently unscrewing the filter from the lens and dropping it on the ground. It is a little tricky getting used to it but it is well with the time and investment. The examples below were shot with a Nikon 1 J1 and the 11 - 27.5mm zoom lens (also purchased from B&H)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great polarizing filter We use this with the Sony a6000 16-50mm lens. It is made with Schott glass and is part of the Carl Zeiss family. Since we live on a boat in NY Harbor, we are constantly using a polarizing filter. This filter is perfect with the standard lens that is sold with the a6000.
