Optoma Technology PK201B overview

  • 1Description

The Optoma PK201 Pico Pocket Projector is marvel of modern miniaturization. It's a real working projector that's two and a half inches wide, less than 3/4 of an inch thick and just a hair over four and a half inches deep. Yet it can project an image that can measure from five inches to five and a half feet measured diagonally.

With its vivid 2000:1 contrast ratio you can project on a screen or just about anywhere. Next time you're on a road trip sit in the back seat and project a movie or play a video game on the seatback in front of you.

The LED light source is rated to last 20,000 hours. You'll never change the lamp in this projector. So how do you get a decent picture out of a pocket-sized projector? Texas Instruments has adapted its famed DLP projection panel system (the part that forms the image) to the requirements of this mighty mite.

The PK201 comes with a Li-On battery that's good for about an hour on a charge. You can recharge it using the included AC adapter or, at a slower rate, directly from the USB port. Of course you can always run on AC power if there's a socket nearby and save your battery power for when you really need it.

You can project from a wide variety of sources thanks to the PK201's 2.5 mm A/V jack.

The PK201 has 28 MB of its own internal memory and its microSD slot accepts cards up to 16 GB. That means you can bring along tons of movies, songs and photos right in the projector. And with an optional iPod kit, sold separately, you can project right from your iPod or iPhone.

The PK201 also projects NTSC and PAL video signals and 720p and 1080i high definition video.

And if you get tired of giving presentations or showing off pictures and movies play a video game. Imagine playing on a 66 inch screen from a device you can fit into your pocket.

    Optoma Technology PK201B reviews

PK201 Pico Pocket Projector is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact and Powerful The PK-201 has all the features I need to project images on canvas to aid with perspective and compositing. Heck, after seeing what it can do, I'll be using it to project outdoor movies this summer in the backyard. The documentation could be a little more comprehensive, but that's a complaint I have about the entire consumer electronics market. Be sure to match up the feature set of the projector to your requirements, because Optoma has quite a selection to choose from. Also worth mentioning is I am having issues with my DC power adapter, but that hasn't slowed me down (it also charges via USB). I will need to contact the mfr for a replacement.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality for its size I use this product at home and with friends and I have found it a very fun toy. It can really throw an image which seems surprising coming from something so small. Image quality is good as long as the room is dark and you're not too far from the wall. The farther you get from the wall, the picture is harder to see and it's hard to get a good focus. But that is to be expected for a pocket projector. Also, it gets scarily hot in a very short amount of time. But that does not affect performance. I enjoy this product quite a bit. I am also impressed with the built-in speaker. It is so small but gives good sound for a small audience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Performance in a Tiny Package I do staff development in different venues. I have to carry all my own equipment and sometimes the lighting is not ideal. After checking out the projector at home, I used it for a class yesterday. We could not shut the decorative drapes and I had forgotten to bring my projection screen. My PowerPoint show was clearly visible on a white textured wall. Set up was easy. I used my laptop keyboard to advance the slides; using the buttons on the projector would have been fine, but a little bit awkward. The projector was beside me at the front of the room. The image was about 36 diagonal and was easily seen by all 15 students.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remember when it took a cart? I remember when I used to have to use a cart to move a projector in and out of meeting rooms. This projector paired with a smart phone or tablet is just the answer. It was easy to set up and connect with a device. The lamp is bright enough, but it could always be brighter. The controls are easy to understand and flexible for multiple applications. I will be traveling to a remote part of the world where power is not reliable and I can only take what I can carry in a backpack. There we will be making presentations to local farmers and villagers. This projector is ideal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not compatible with MacBook Pro I can view pictures from the mini-SD card only. When connected to the Mac laptop, projector menu is all the further I can get. e-mail to Optoma unanswered. Instructions have little useful information. Battery life about twenty minutes. Most pictures look good but dark pics are really dark. Requires VGA adapter for macs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very portable We got 3 of these for an equipment checkout facility I work at. These were in high demand by the art students for small installations. The battery charge holds for a while so it is nice to not be in constant need of a power cord. They are tiny, so the projected image does not get too big, but it worked for our needs. We did have some trouble getting a few Macs to recognize the projector at first, but it was very random. We did not use audio with it, so no comment on sound quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rear and inverted projection with a Pico So far this is the ONLY line of Pico projectors that I've found that can do rear and inverted projection. It's also LED tech but nearly as bright as the projectors I've tried with the new laser tech. While it does have internal speakers, they're teeny tiny and only really good for reviewing video. Also keep in mind that you're going to have to convert your video to mp4 in order to play it off the MicroSD, but that's pretty easy nowdays.
