    Olympus MAL-1 reviews

Macro Arm Light (MAL-1) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from There Is Nothing MAL About It It's everything I wanted it to be, Small, Light, Flexible, and Bright. The arms stay where you place then and don't sag or droop unexpectedly. The switches seem a bit meek, but they work just fine, and if I'm careful with them I expect they will last a lifetime. The attachment locking pin is a nice feature that insures that everything stays in it's proper place when you're getting things set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clever little gadget This little pair of lights won't do anything that a set of, say, microscope lamps wouldn't do, but as long as all you need is a main and a fill light, it is MUCH more convenient than the alternatives. There are other options-ring light, pair of small strobes attached to the lens, etc., and they will let you stop down for better depth of field, but if your subject is small, and not very long on the lens axis, this will do fine--and the price is right.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Won't replace a ring light; but handy Handy little gadget to keep in your kit but let's be honest it's not going to replace a ring light. Hence the four stars and with that in mind I have a couple of suggestions for Olympus: make it so it can be used off-camera and/or make the arms a bit longer/or allow you to extend them. I've just acquired this bit of gear, so time will tell how much use I get out of it; but it seems to be well built. It's easy and fun to use. Hope this helps, happy shooting. ciao mare

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Light Excellent tool for macro shooting. It is almost as good as a ring light, but it takes getting used to. It is so easy to manually manipulate each light and get the effecto perfect. Am amazed. It sure beats the somewhat cheaper knockoffs that run off their own batteries. This runs off the camera battery. IT IS WONDERFUL !

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flexible Light A great help - as long as you do not need a floodlight. The ability to put light on a macro subject, exactly where it's needed - with a tripod or hand held - is great. I often find that all that is needed is a bit of shadow fill, or a nudge up the ISO scale, and this does that very well. I love it. The only reason I haven't given it five stars is it would have been slight better had the light output on high been a bit better. I'm niggling here though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent little accessory for macro I bought this device for taking outdoor and indoor macro photos. Works as promised and works well with my macro lens. The adjustable arms allows for trial and error to create highlights or eliminate shadows. The 3 power settings are useful in fine tuning the shots. I would have liked the arms to be an inch longer though to be able to get more side light when using my 45mm lens with a 10x zoom filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks like a bug antenna - works well! Sometimes lighting for macto is tricky because you get close enough to block your own light. This nifty gadget solves the problem. Just be careful to disengage it carefully using the unlock button in the front. This even has different light intensities. Because it connects to the Olympus power slot at the back of the hot shoe, I am assuming it cannot be used for any other cameras.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little light on the subject Simple, straightforward operation. Slides into place easily. Arms bend as you would expect, although they sometimes need tweaking to stay in place. Separate power levels are nice, with fine adjustments left to positioning. Light is hard -- ideal for forensic photography, but a bit harsh for living things. Definitely worth the retail price.
