Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Sigma's 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Nikon) is designed for use with full-frame digital cameras, and offers a dramatically ultra-wide, minimally distorted zoom lens with a field of view from 122° to 84.1°. This range makes it ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography. Using a camera with an APS-C sensor will give you an effective range of 17-35mm, also a very attractive wide-angle zoom range.

One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element and four "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements compensate for color aberration and deliver improved image quality. Three glass mold elements and one hybrid aspherical lens give you compact, lightweight construction (3.3" diameter x 4.7"/23.6 oz) and improved performance.

Super Multi-Layer Coating on the lens reduces flare and ghosting, while the Inner Focusing system keeps the length of the lens unchanged when changing focus. The splash-proof design helps protect the 12-24mm lens from the elements. This versatile, sturdy lens will put drama into just about any subject you choose.

Equipped with HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) for quiet, high-speed focusing, it also offers Full Time Manual Focusing.

Designed for use with full frame digital cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 17-35mm with most cameras

    Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Nikon) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Wide! I was apprehensive of buying another Sigma lens due to irregular quality control issues in the past. I got a good copy of this lens on the first try this time. I wanted a wide lens made especially for full frame cameras. Build quality is very good. On my full frame Nikon camera the 12-24mm range allows for some very creative wide pictures. Slight CA is not a big issue and is easily addressed in Photoshop. Distortion and Vignetting are very reasonable and are to be expected with a lens this wide. Bottom line; this is a very fun lens to use on a full frame camera with interesting and sharp results. Color and contrast is great. I am very happy with this lens and I do not see how spending twice as much for a wide Nikon is necessary. I do wish it would accept filters however.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent lens but fragile This lens covers a very useful wide-angle range. Smooth in operation and excellent picture quality. But lots of care required in use, the front lens element can scratch easily because the flare guard around the lens is not very deep (because of the wide-angle required) and the front lens element is very exposed to outside. So need to take care and put on the additional sleeve and lens cap to take care of the lens when not in use.In addition, in my experience the lens is not capable of taking much physical stress and can be damaged easily. This may or may not be the issue with many such wide-angle lenses.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't leave home without it! :D THE GOOD: - Phenomenally large view for landscapes. - Fast auto-focus. THE BAD: - Autofocus does NOT work on the Nikon D810. - No weather sealing. All together, this is a MUST HAVE lens when it comes to gigantic buildings, large places and other landscape photography. When I go out for a walk knowing I'll be taking shots of large objects or wide areas, then this is my don't leave home without lens. Unfortunately the auto-focus is not working with the Nikon D810, at least not my version that I've purchased before the 810 came out. But all together, I like this lens a lot! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really not a bad lens at all Being an f/4.5-5.6 lens, it's not bulky or heavy. Shooting landscapes you don't really use any wider than that anyways unless you are a wedding/portrait photographer and had a desire to use such a wide angle. Also using the Nikkor 14-24 2.8, I thought the Sigma was pretty sharp and not too far off from the Nikkor. There is slight vignette but I don't mind, It's not bad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its super wide I bought this to compilment my 17-35 2.8, So I didnt need another fast wide, and this lens is quite a bit wider than the nikon 14-28 2.8, and under half the price. I have taken some excellent shots with this lens already. It will be part of my kit now, it does have noticeable CA but that can be fixed with software,it gives a unique type of distortion, but if used right can be fantastic. Very happy with my purchase, very good for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well controlled SUPERWIDE! I've loved this lens on my Canons and I love the newest version even more on my new D800's. My Canon copy became distorted after 3 years of heavy use, sent it to Sigma and they sent me a NEW lens with a fresh 5 year warranty! When I switched to Nikon in May it was the first lens I ordered!! Very useful and well controlled perspective/distortion. Very professional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Ultra wide This is a great lens for landscaping. The 122 degree field of view is fantastic and gives a great perspective. While this is a variable aperture lens it works great for day time and night time photography. No vignetting or fall off at the edges which is great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thought Sigma was pretty good until... I've changed my review of this lens. Before I thought it was just ok and pretty decent through and through. The more I use this lens, the more I hate it. First off, the price point is ridiculous. This lens being almost $1000 is absurd. The flair from this lens is atrocious and the sharpness loss even at f/10 is ugly. The build is pretty solid but the fact that the lens hood is actually built onto the lens is too weird for me. I recently returned this lens and went with Nikon's 16-35.
