Westcott 4634 Overview

Photography discussions are full of desert island scenarios; "if you had to choose a single lens or if you had to choose a single light..." Well if you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Westcott 7' White/Black Umbrella.

First of all, it's a really big, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors.

This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. The shaft is double walled for strength, but it tapers to 7mm to fit Elinchrom and other European flash heads. Insert the shaft into the tilter bracket below the Elinchrom head. Older models or other brands may require separate purchase of an inexpensive umbrella mount. Instead of bendable metal, the umbrella's 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass and the fixed black backing ensures that all of the light output is on your subject instead of through the umbrella. You can also vary the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft for a harder or softer light or for a longer distance throw. With the Westcott 7' Black/White Umbrella less is definitely more.

Measures 7.25' (2.2 m) in diameter
Constructed using 16 durable fiberglass ribs
Double wall shaft is engineered with double the thickness of most umbrellas
7mm tapered umbrella shaft tip
Carry case with shoulder strap is lightweight and constructed of heavy-duty nylon

7' Umbrella Throws a Nice Light

I had become accustomed to using a 5' umbrella as part of my arsenal, but an unfortunate accident broke a few too many ribs making it useless. I came across the Westcott 7' umbrella on a sale and decided to take a chance and give it a try. I had intended eventually replace the 5 footer, but the quality of light I was getting, made me quickly forget about replacing the previous 5' model. I added in the outside diffuser and was again pleasantly surprised and pleased with the results. I'm still planning to replace the 5' umbrella, but I'm not in much of a rush because of the versatility of the 7' Westcott umbrella......

Liked it so much I bought it twice.

Not only is this a great umbrella (especially with the optional diffuser), but unfortunately it also makes a great sail. Hence the need to replace my first one. :-/ Next time, weights!

Awesome for the price.

I could have spent 4000 USD on a Broncolor, I suppose. I doubt it would do a better job. This one is not built to near the same standard, but I am a weekend warrior of sorts and only use this thing once or twice every six months, so this is perfect.

I like this parabolic umbrella

This umbrella gives me great diffusion with the diffuser I got for it. Really spreads the light evenly. Maybe ill add some photos I took later! Cheers!

This thing creates the softest most beautiful light. Combine it with the diffusion cover and you have studio quality soft light that would cost 3-4x as much if it were a softbox and it's portable and easier to set up. I use it as a large fill source or a key light.

Bright and smooth.

Big and soft, the 7 foot umbrella is easy to transport, light, and much brighter that an octa. Would be 5 stars if the center pole had a bit less flexibility. All in all a lovely light source, big enough for groups, bright enough to throw a good distance, easy enough to take with you on location ( as long as its not windy), and inexpensive as well.

is this heat resistant? will it withstand mounting in front of a 650w fresnel?
Asked by: Francis
According to Westcott, the maximum wattage hot light (tungsten, halogen, HMI, etc.) that is recommended for use with the Westcott 7' Umbrella (White / Black) would be a 300 watt light fixture. As such, no, I would not recommend the usage of the ARRI 650W Plus Tungsten Fresnel with the Westcott 7' Umbrella (White / Black).

It doesn't actually say its parabolic, its it average and not so shallow umbrella, but it is not a deep parabolic, correct? I am comparing it to Godox deep parabolic umbrella, and Godox is winning!
Asked by: Yehia
A parabola is just a U-shape, and you can see the U shape from the side of this umbrella. It is not a deep parabolic umbrella, however.
