Fashion photographers, who pretty much invented the location shoot, have known for a long time that when it comes to light, natural is best - provided you can control it. The Sun-Swatter Big Super Saver Starter Kit from Sunbounce is part of a system that does just that. Resembling a huge fly-swatter, this 6 x 8' (183 x 244 cm) light shaper stretches a translucent screen across its high tensile strength aluminum frame.

A couple of minutes of easy setup gets you a very large patch of bright open shade with manageable contrast, thanks to the included 2/3 stop diffusion screen, instead of glaring deep-shadowed sunlight broiling your subject. While the Sun-Swatter is easily handheld by its frame, why not use the kit's Boom Stick extension handle which gives you a maximum extension of 10.4’ (319 cm). Also included are a grip head for stand mounting and a set of clips to tighten the fabric. The kit fits neatly in the included soft carrying case.

Sunbounce Sun-Swatter Big Reviews

Be careful of this kit, wrong parts included

Ordered this kit from B&H and it came with the grip head for the 4x6 swatter instead of the 6x8. B&H doesnt believe me even after I sent pictures and videos... B&H customer service has always been a struggle imo. Its suppose to come with 710-SWAB but mine came with 710-SWA... The real bummer is the process I had to go through to try to solve this issue in a timely manner. I will spare you the details, no solution from B&H and now they have just stopped responding to me... Its probably a mistake by Cali Sun Bounce but you would hope B&H as the company that sold it would care to help the customer solve their issue, but instead they just keep telling me I got the right part...... Even though I clearly didnt. So I gave up on them and bought the Sunbounce Swatty Duo Grip Head. Swatter works great now, B&H customer service still lacking..

I have been using California Sunbounce products for around 20 years. Unlike most products, the quality your used to, is still present. This is a welcomed surprise in an industry where we often accept a continuous decay in build quality. As for shooting, shaving nearly a stop off the top end while decreasing contrast does help. We can all dump 2400 Jules on a portrait client, however, families aren't models and I prefer a more understated look. Production doubles as I can shoot two groups because I have the good light sooner in the day. The kit has a great boom that sure exceeds the capabilities of my previous jury rigs. Expensive? Yes. Tradiotional quality comes at a price - It also comes with a service life

Swatter is great! Boom stick is not.

6 x 8 swatter is a little large for the boom stick it came with. It's also very heavy with one person holding it. I had two people holding it outside then a little breeze bent it back the opposite direction I wanted it to shade. I tightened it as tight as it could go and it blew over again. I ended up doing the whole shoot with a person holding each side. I would love to see someone try to hold this size on a windy beach. I don't mean to be so negative because it did what I wanted it for and that was to shade my model on a sunny day. It wasn't a total lost. If you are going to buy this I would buy it without a boom stick and know you will more than likely need two people to hold it.

Not as high quality as you would expect

Functionally, this is a good idea and works well for softening sunlight on the subject. But build quality is a bit poor in the 6x8 size and especially for the extremely high cost of this item. The plastic buckles on the straps that tension the Sun Swatter have already snapped during a shoot, sending the sun swatter falling down onto our model. For the money I spent on this thing, it should be much higher quality, and I would have expected metal parts instead of poor quality plastic.

I've met with the designer, Peter Geller, on various occasions and I know him very well. In fact, when I first purchased my California Sunbunce products in 2004, I reached out to Peter and after about a year, we finally met and became friends. He even came out to one of my shoots in the Virgin Islands and I've visited him in Germany. The first time he visited he showed me the proper way to use his products, as like most photographers, we tend to not read the instructions and do what our gut tells us. I have used many of his products since then and they have never failed me. Yes, this larger Sun Swatter can be a little more challenging in the windy areas, but with help, you can make it work just perfect.
