    WD Studio II Reviews

6TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 82.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to Use After Trouble With Setup I bought this produce as a storage device for high definition video that eats up tons of space and to use with my new iMac running OS X Lion. I intended to partition it (set it up at RAID 1) so that the two separate 3TB drives would mirror one another, thereby serving as a backup. The disk that came with the hard drive did not install the current version of the software, which prevented me from even launching the Raid Manager software which would allow me to reconfigure the drive from RAID 0 (default) to RAID 1. The folks at WD support were helpful, but I figured it out myself by downloading and installing the updated software from the WD website. It took longer than it should have, but now it's working just fine.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quiet, but falls asleep Even though this drive is formatted for Mac, with a little bit of patience, it can be formatted for a PC. The drive is extremely quiet, but the biggest issue the drive has, is that it goes to sleep at some specific time, that only Western Digital knows. You cannot eliminate sleep time from the drive, a major flaw on the part of Western Digital. The drive would not stay awake during the transfer of 200gb, which may possibly be avoided with an eSata connection, but I did not want to go down that road. For me, this drive should have been plug and play, but that's not what happened. I ended up returning the drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Buy This model has all the currently in demand and affordable high end connections. USB3.0 and Thunderbolt are not available on my current iMac, maybe in 1-2 years it will be a consideration. With the eSata port on back, I can easily get a Thunderbolt dock converter and not have to move hard drives to get the faster access.. The large space also rocks! 6TB is very roomie after my 3TB driver that was 99% full. I used this drive for my iTunes Media . Access time is fantastic after the drive is awake and in use. Otherwise it takes a few seconds to let it spin up. This is my 3rd Western Digital Studio drive. Very reliable and sustainable. Just gotta backup, backup, backup like you would with any drive,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Like it so much I bought a Second One I bought a WD 6TB to replace my Seagate external drive that was unreliable from Day One. With an ever growing huge number of large raw, dng, and tiff photo files, I wanted an external drive for my iMac. I figured I would never need more than 6TB. However, the speed and reliability of the Western Digital convinced me to buy a second one to provide a backup for the first. Using my Mac's Time Machine backup software, I now have two WD6TB's connected via Firewire. I operate off the first drive where I have my Lightroom catalog and my photo files, and Time Machine backs up my Mac's internal drive as well as the original WD 6TB to the second WD 6TB. It is really a good setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to use! This was so easy to begin using--basically: hook it up, turn it on start backing up. I was surprised at how long it took to back up 3.1 TB from my Mac Pro with 12 gigs of ram, but that's not the problem of the back-up hard drive. Fortunately, because everything is working well with my initial drives, I haven't tried to retrieve anything off of this one, but I have no reason to think it wouldn't do that well, too. I was pleased that it was an in-stock item at B&H and that it came promptly. I had already gone 3 weeks without being able to back-up due to lack of space, so having it come quickly was a relief.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with this purchase Transaction with B&H was great, paid UPS ground and received in two days. I have a Mac and the drive was plug and go out of the box. I easily changed to Raid 1 from the default Raid 0. Using USB connection and the data transfer speed is OK for me. This was a concern after reading product reviews pre-purchase. I am using this drive to store my music collection so transfer speed is not really a concern. I am happy with the purchase and would recommend this unit and B&H to others. The only reason that I did not rate it 5 stars is that I have only had the drive about a month. However, I also have two other WD externals, a 500GB (5yrs) and 2TB (1+yr)and both still work great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always Impressed with Western Digital! I am a Senior Portrait and Wedding Photographer so keeping my files safe and backed up is of the highest priority to me. I have had no issues with this external drive and the fact that it has raid is unbeatable- you can't get better protection than that. It is sturdy and strong and I know that WD backs up their products. I have bought from off brands and lets just say they don't even compare. I would definitely recommend this to all serious photographers-if you need to keep your files backed up, without fear of loosing them- the WD 6TB external hard drive with raid is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works well I upgraded from a trusty 2x1TB WDC My Book Studio Edition to this model. I quickly configured the new drive, duplicated my old data and started using this new drive with minimum time and effort. It works really well.
