    Rycote 041119 reviews

041119 Portable Recorder Suspension is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from good but not excellent Achieves much of what it was made to do. The suspension system is made of tough flexible plastic that cuts some vibration, but not all. Rubber would be better. There is still noticeable vibrations noise being carried to the recorder if hand-holding. Maybe atop camera it improves. Simply, the material of the suspension is not vibration dampening enough. Secondly, and very irritatingly, it mounts the recorder with a screw but the screw easily comes unwound, risking, if one is not vigilant, the recorder falling to the ground. In the field, working under pressure, this rig is not user-freindly or reliable. That said, if you are careful using it, and don't have high expectations, you will probably be happy with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Eliminates handling noise I use this suspension for my Sony PCM M10 with a foam hand grip. It attaches easily and is a good solution for eliminating handling noise with portable recorders. I recently took this rig on a hiking trip and got some great source. It is small enough that I could stow the whole package in a fanny pack without breaking it down in between recordings. It also has a strain relief clip for your headphone cable that cuts down on rustling if you need to move around while recording. The plastic suspension and cable clip look like they won't last forever, but for the price, I'm satisfied with what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from well designed and works great, but... This is the most convenient and well designed portable recorder suspension solution I could find on the net, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone opting to use an external recordable with a 1/4 mounting thread for their dSLR audio needs. The lyres virtually eliminate any shock noise and the whole unit is very well made. However, it's $! That is a ton of money for something made of plastic that probably cost $5 when it was made in Thailand or Hong Kong. If it were $50 I'd say it was worth it, but $ is outrageous. But that's just the way pro-photo mark up works. You're basically paying for the convenience as no other company (Opteka, Neewer, etc.) has come out with anything similar for less. If you are doing pro-audio with your recorder and need a good shock mount, I say go for this one, but be prepared to shell out cash.-David Schwittek, @

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great It effectively neutralizes handling and vibration sounds that used to be picked up by my sound recorder. It is also MUCH stronger than it looks, so much so the lyre can be twisted completely the wrong way and it still won't break. Unbelievable!! Attaching my recorder to the suspension isn't as straight forward as I had thought. I have to remove the 1/4-20 thread from the top, screw it to my recorder, reinsert the thread through the suspension top hole, and then screw in the locking ring from the bottom. I had thought the thread and locking ring were a captive one-piece screw to make attaching/detaching devices easier.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Top locking nut unwound and gone ! I use the shock mount mainly for my H6, side mounted on a monopod, top mounted with my camera. The shock mont did quite well, vibration isolation is acceptable. Enough for supporting my intention of taking Live recording from band show. The most annoying is the top screw (with a locking nut) , without any mechanism to trap it and secure it in place, the nut will unwound and gone off, if it is not locking something in place. My unit is has the locking nut gone off from my 1st day of use !

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mixed Feelings For such an expensive and specialized item, it is strangely carelessly put together. The first copy I got had one slightly loose screw which produced an audible rattle that took a while to diagnose. Next, the tilting mechanism is so terribly designed that I'd rather not have it. Whoever designed it didn't take into account the weight of a Zoom H4n or comparable recorder. Out of the box, tilting the camera even slightly down would cause my H4n to flop down on its face and come to rest on the lens. Even after tightening the hex screw that controls the friction on this mechanism with all my might, I have to orient the Rycote on the hot-shoe in such a way that tilting the camera up or down does not put any strain on this joint. All that said, if you're able to get around the above issues, it does its basic job, that of reducing handling noise, very well. I used to use a flash bracket to mount my camera and Zoom H4n, and after using the Rycote I now realize how much of a near-constant low-frequency rumble I was getting before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bit of kit! Wish I'd had one of these from right when I first bought my H2n. Cos there are several in-built mics the Zoom H2n tricky to hand hold without handling noise - you have to set it down. Not always convenient. This mount really helps keep it noise-free when you're holding it. Definitely worth the money - another very good product by Rycote. And B&H dealt with the order promptly -arrived very fast/

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Such Stability! Used to hold Zoom H6 on Nikon D800. Works as expected with appropriate reduction in noise from handling the camera. Seems sturdy for molded plastic. Agree with other reviewers that this is pricey for what it is, but few discreet or non-bulky alternatives are available.
