Ricoh GV-2 Reviews

Useful in bright sunny days

This viewfinder is most useful in very sunny days. Just mind the grid lines at the top border when you are up close, as it will save you from cutting it off in the photo.

Almost perfect

The finder is bright, lines are clear and nice 1:1 markings as well, just wish it had a physical lock to the shoe to prevent it from sliding off when going in and out of a pouch.

Exorbitant price

I have two Ricoh GR’s, including the latest one. Both carried a hefty price tag, but they’re worth it. This viewfinder is a lens and a hard plastic enclosure – period – no electronics, or anything to warrant the exorbitant price. The cost is in the neighborhood of one-third the price of the camera! Madness.

Costly but good quality

A lot of money for this viewfinder, but it’s a perfect fit for the GRii and is optically very good. I mean you can buy a very good digital point and shoot camera for this price. Other options from other manufacturers are just too big and ruin the smallness of the camera when you mount them on it. Just got it, so I hope it lasts at this price. 4 stars because of the cost.

Useful, well built but not necessary most of the time

Helpful but not absolutely necessary. I like to frame shots with a viewfinder. I use it maybe 20% of the time. Build quality and accuracy are fine. Best use is in bright sunlight when the LCD is hard to see. However, the LCD is so good you rarely need a separate viewfinder.

Nice!

It's nicer than you think. The finish feels like a powder coat and the whole thing is solid. Though the foot is plastic like the rest of it. Tight fit into the GR hotshoe, no worries of loosing it. And it's super compact and light. Obviously not the largest view, but bright frame lines and clear optics. If buying at retail, might consider the Voigtlander 28, that one is all metal and will outlast you. But it will be larger/heavier too. This one is a perfect fit for GR.

Caution

This is an expensive little addition to my Ricoh GR III pocket street camera. It works as it is supposed to. But you should be aware that if you wear glasses this little dude will seriously scratch your lens. To be able to see the full frame brightline you will have to put your eyeglass lens in contact with the view finder, but it is coated with a very hard and abrasive material that will definitely scratch your eyeglass lens.. I suppose you could use a fine sand paper and smooth the rim of the finder. What I did with mine was to paint the rim with a liquid rubber polymer that comes in a tube using a #1 soft artist brush. That works, though it does not look very good. It is hard to imagine why they make these things with such an abrasive surface. So $250 for this viewfinder and $450 for new eyeglass lens, I could have almost bought another camera. So, I cannot recommend this view finder to anyone who wears glasses, and if I had it to do over I would try the Ricoh GV-1 which is $100 cheaper,

Outrageous

“when not in use stores nicely in the included case” ‘Case’? It’s a flimsy cloth pouch! Massively overpriced, then saying it includes a ‘case’? Outrageous!

Please explain the 1:1 Aspect Ratio marks. Thanks!

Be aware that the latest Ricoh GR (V) has a 3:2 sensor, while the earlier were 4:3.So I expect the GV-2 has 4:3 lines. This should probably be added to the specs.

Hi John,Viewfinder has no diopter. Super bright and clear. I wear glasses too. No trouble at all viewing. It is a nice option to have.
