Shure SM93 overview

  • 1Description

The SM93 is an omnidirectional, subminiature, lavalier electret condenser microphone designed for use in TV broadcasting, theater, and sound reinforcement applications where a visually unobtrusive microphone is desirable. Despite its small size, the 93 microphone element provides full, clear sound comparable to that of much larger microphones. Its frequency response is tailored to body-worn applications, with low-end roll-off and presence rise. Optimum pickup is achieved when the microphone is worn on the user's chest. However, high quality sound can also be obtained when the microphone is worn in the hair, sewn into clothing, or attached to an acoustic instrument such as a guitar. The SM93 is supplied with a sew-on mounting bracket, a mounting block with attached tie bar, and an acoustic windscreen to minimize wind noise in outdoor applications.

The SM93 is also supplied with a dual mounting block with attached tie bar. The SM93 is powered by phantom power supplied by broadcast, sound reinforcement or recording equipment, or an external phantom supply. The SM93 operates over an extremely wide voltage range of 11 to 52 VDC, covering both DIN and IEC phantom power standards. A dual-channel power supply (Shure Model PS1A) is available for providing phantom power to the SM93.

    Shure SM93 reviews

    SM93 - Micro-Lavalier Omnidirectional Microphone is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD VALUE Buying our first professional camcorder with XLR jacks (a beautiful low mileage 2003 Mini DV Panasonic DVC80) meant it was time to replace $29.99 mini-plug AT lavaliers (a good value on the low end.) What does the extra hundred dollars buy? Better sound, no batteries, with phantom power from my cam, and those wonderfully solid XLR connections. Remember, this pickup is an OMNI pattern, so you'll get all the extraneous sounds-which works in my situation for interviewing off mic. It is as advertised. You could spend a lot more for less.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Interview Lavaliere I have used other more expensive lavalieres that frankly sound better. But these other lavs are fragile and unreliable. I can't afford to buy a new lav every year. This Shure lavaliere has a hollow bottom end but you only notice this if you mix two types of mic on one recording, or do an A/B test. On it's own, the SM93 is a fine mic. Voices sound natural. All Shure gear is military spec, so you know it's sturdy. Plus, the SM93 can be used with Shure's wireless systems if you upgrade at a later date. I have jumped off the tram and I'm not looking back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mic for the Price I was looking for a decent lav mic that would give me good audio at a relatively low price point. I settled on this model because of the reviews and the fact that I don't have any immediate need for a mic that can run off a battery option - phantom power suits me just fine. After shooting 3 interviews I can say the audio is good - especially for this price point. It still needed a bit of tweaking in post, but overall I was happy with the results. If you don't mind running on phantom power, and a little bit heavy preamp doesn't bother you, I'd definitely recommend this mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the price I use this mic (actually 4 of them) for depositions and conference room setups. The sound quality is good, with good off-axis pickup. The windscreen supplied with the mic is a bit large - and a light gray color - so I replaced it with a smaller black windscreen to make the mic less visible on clothing or ties.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Clean, Warm Sound The SM93 is a great alternative to the more expensive wireless systems, especially if you're using a field recorder (Tacsam, H1, etc.) to sync-up audio later. The mic itself is TINY, but captures great sound. The clips are sturdy and the windscreen goes on relatively easy. Works great with the Tascam DR-40, but it will record mono. However, you can make it stereo in post by duplicating the tracks. Cord is long enough to conceal under clothing and clip the recorder to your belt or stick in a large pocket. XLR plug is pretty big, like a large industrial marker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bang for your buck! I use two of these as part of my interviewing kit for documentaries. If you want something that will give you professional level sound without breaking the bank, these are great. They do need phantom power so remember to purchase a phantom power source when purchasing this item. Also, be generous with the length in XLR cables that you puchase. I use these with a 25ft length of XLR so that they suit the purpose of any interview sitation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I have just had it for a little while, but it seems sturdy. The sound quality is good, though the bass roll off is a bit heavy so the low end is not so good. Still there is no hum at typical levels of gains.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great--short cable is truly a virtue Provides excellent audio; we use it at meetings of non-profit organizations. The short 4' cable to the pre-amplifier is actually a huge plus, not a negative as some have said. The pre-amplifier's belt clip nicely fits the speaker's belt or clothing, preventing the thin mic cable from getting on the floor or otherwise endangered. The large globe-shaped windscreen that's included looks a bit silly so I replaced it with a small inexpensive rectangular windscreen--the mic still works fine.
