Pentax 16302B Overview

  • 1Description

The Pentax K-x Digital SLR incorporates advanced DSLR features - including Live View and HD 720p video - in a very capable entry-level camera for those looking to step beyond the limitations of point-and-shoot digicams. Bundled with a Pentax 18-55mm zoom lens (a 27 to 82.5mm zoom on a conventional 35mm camera), the compact Pentax K-x makes the transition to a 'serious' camera system with interchangeable lenses easy and painless.

The Pentax K-x contains a 12.4-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor that incorporates a sensor-shift Shake Reduction System that allows you to hand-hold the camera at shutter speeds up to 4-stops slower than normal under low-light situations and still maintain image sharpness. Aside from the K-x's bright optical finder, you can also compose images in Live View mode using the camera's 2.7" LCD.

Despite the K-x's entry-level price point, still images can be captured at a fast 4.7 frames-per-second at shutter speeds up to 1/6000th-second as JPEGs or RAW files. And along with conventional still imaging, you can also capture wide-screen, full resolution 720p (1280x720) HD video at 24fps using the full range of Pentax optics. For travel or everyday family events, the Pentax K-x makes for an ideal imaging companion.

Other advanced features found on the Pentax K-x include an 11-point, wide-angle SAFOX VIII autofocus system, a variety of automatic and manual scene modes, and a True High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature that captures a series of 3 bracketed images and combines them into a single optimized image with a full range of highlight, midrange, and shadow detail.

The Pentax K-x can capture up to 1900 exposures on a set of AA lithium batteries and is also compatible with AA NiMH and alkaline batteries.

12.4-megapixel APS-C Format CMOS Sensor
The K-x incorporates a newly developed CMOS image sensor to assure high-speed image data readout and more flexibility with varying ISO sensitivity levels. With approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, this image sensor accurately reproduces true-to-life images with fine detail and rich color depth. The K-x offers a wide sensitivity range between ISO 200 and ISO 6400 and allows users to expand the sensitivity range between ISO 100 and ISO 12800 via a custom function to offer greater creative freedom to photographers.
Wide Screen HD 1280x720p Video Recording @ 24 Frames-per-Second
The Pentax K-x movie recording function* captures true-to-life movie clips in 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at a frame rate of 24 frames per second. Compatible with every Pentax interchangeable lens ever made, the Video Capture mode opens a new world of creativity for Pentax K-x owners.
High-Speed Continuous Shooting at approximately 4.7 Images-per-Second
The K-x's high-speed continuous shooting mode records as many as 17 images (in JPEG recording format) at a maximum speed of approximately 4.7 images per second. This is the fastest of all entry-class models. The K-x also features a more reliable shutter unit, which passed a demanding action test of more than 100,000 shutter releases. The top shutter speed of 1/6000 second allows the photographer to preserve sharp, crisp images of fast-moving subjects.
High-Performance, High-Speed PRIME II Imaging Processor
The K-x features the newly developed PRIME (Pentax Real Image Engine) II, that is an upgrade of the original PRIME imaging engine. This new imaging engine offers greater data processing speed and enhanced capability to produce higher-quality images with richer, more accurate color rendition, as well as faster transmission speed of movie data.
Live View Function with Face Detection of up to 16 Faces
In addition to the camera's viewfinder, the K-x features a Live View function that allows users to view subjects on the LCD monitor during shooting. The K-x also offers a choice of three different focusing modes in Live View: Contrast Auto Focus, Face Detection Auto Focus, and Phase Difference Auto Focus.
Digital Filters
The K-x's digital filter function allows users to process recorded images in a variety of creative ways within the camera and produce highly creative visual expressions. With a choice of 16 different filters including Color Extract, Retro, Soft, Starburst, Toy Camera, and more (including a custom filter for building multiple effects), photographers may apply multiple filters to a single image for customized effects.
Cross Process Mode
The K-x features a new Cross Process mode that automatically and randomly adds finishing touches to exposures to create eye-catching images with unique, intriguing colors (just like images treated with Cross Process* in film photography). This mode adds a whimsical element to digital photography since photographers don't know the results until the captured image is actually displayed on the camera's LCD monitor.
High-Precision 11-Point AF Sensor
The high-precision, wide-frame SAFOX VIII autofocus system of the K-x features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors positioned in the middle) to automatically capture even off-centered subjects in sharp, crisp focus. Photographers also may select one of the sensors as a focusing point to accommodate specialized applications.
Additional Features Include:
Custom Image modes offer high quality processing for images, a 2.7" (230,000-dot) high-resolution color LCD, Auto Picture mode for effortless, automatic selection of the most appropriate shooting mode, even during Live View shooting , a Status screen for easy, at-a-glance confirmation of various settings on the LCD, 10 scene modes, including Night Scene, Surf & Snow, Sunset, Kids, and Museum available via simple icon selection, and Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 software package, with RAW-data processing and image browser functions.

    Pentax 16302B Reviews

Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (White) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 183.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best camera in its class. Small, light, full of features. High ISO (12800), anti-shake, 720i video. I use it mostly for astro-photography, where the high ISO comes in handy. I saw a review on ...that showed the K-x versus Canon's and Nikon's high ISO products. The K-x images won without question. I love the fact that Pentax is the ONLY camera manufacturer that kept its old non-AF, non-Digital lens mount, which means I can use my old Pentax-M fully manual lenses with this camera (albeit I am required to use the Green button (set to Optical Preview) to meter the scene - it is no harder than using the meter in the normal way. This is one beautiful camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pro Quality Photos for great price Professional- I was about to go with Nikon for my business, but looked at reviews on imaging resource and compared All the great Nikons, including Full frame and believe it or not, this little jewel beat the D90 hands down on high iso shooting. The kit lenses are also sharper on Pentax than on Nikon & Canon kits. It even looked better than some of the full frame camera comparisons between Nikon & Canon. The KX just came out, so there's not a lot of reviews, but the ones that are out there, convinced me that it is better than the more expensive name brands. And yes, I am pleased with the image quality.Bought it here at BH - used the money I saved to add TTL flash, and off camera bracket & diffuser. Plan to buy another at BH for back up camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Pentax Cam I am a pro photographer and wanted to get into video. This is a great camera to get started with. Additionally, it is small and compact and makes a nice casual camera to take on small trip s and shoots instead of the big Pentax K-200's that I use. Video quality and ease of use is excellent. Great camera all the way around with a few minor detractors. The sensor does tend to give you an overheat warning when shooting video in hot weather for more than 10 minutes. Additionally, I would really have liked the ability to change the frame rate of the video. But certainly not a deal breaker. Good, reliable Pentax platform.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased I am very pleased with my recent purchase of the Pentax K-X with the kit lens. The white color aka Stormtrooper, is fabulous. The camera is comfortable to hold and delivers very good image quality. The kit lens is a little soft but it does improve well when stopped down to f8 or so. The shutter is a little noisy - it doesn't have the refined sound of a Nikon or Canon shutter mostly because of the mirror slap. But you get used to it and it reminds me of some of my early film SLR's. The K-X doesn't have the quick access function buttons that other cameras have. But it does have a very good interface that allows functions to be accessed by pressing the INFO button and then navigating quickly to a function you want to change. You don't need to page through menus as you do with other entry level cameras. While not as fast as dedicated buttons, it is MUCH faster than menu driven cameras. Some people have complained about the camera being picky about batteries. Mine has been flawless. I've used Sanyo Eneloops and managed about 650 shots before the battery indicator turned red and the camera shut off. I am not trying to exhaust the AA lithium batteries that came with the camera and I'm still green after 705 shots. Anyone looking for an entry level camera with features such as in camera HDR, quick focusing liveview, exposure bracketing, 1/6000th shutter speed, excellent high ISO image quality and comfortable, quick handling, would do themselves an injustice not to consider the Pentax K-X.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera for the Price This is a great beginner camera! I bought this camera for my daughter. She has gotten interested in photography and is taking classes in school. It has all the modes from P&S cameras to help her get started and it can go totally manual. I currently own a K10D and a bunch of lenses that I will be able to share with her. This camera is small and light! You will have no problem carrying this around all day! I bought it with the kit lens(it was a few dollars cheaper than body only...go figure) and it seems to be pretty sharp. The almost 5fps is nice for sports. Another nice thing is that it does wireless flash, this is great for a beginner camera! To sum it up: great starter camera than can grow with you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I'm totally new to DSLR photography, and this has been a phenomenal camera so far. Love the photos it takes and the controls are intuitive, even for a newbie like me--would recommend this camera to anyone. I bought it specifically to take family photos, meaning lots of indoor shooting with low light. So far it's done the job admirably, couldn't ask for more. Bought it after exhaustive research vs Nikon D5000 and Canon Rebels. Extremely pleased with value for money. On the lens, no complaints, it creates crisp results through a comfortable range of focal lengths. Combined with the camera's low light ability, it manages to capture excellent images without the need for a flash, most of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!!! The K-x from Pentax is an excellent camera. This is my first DSLR, and I am learning fast. I firmly believe that the ease of use of this camera has accelerated my learning process, as I feel very confident taking pictures with my own settings after a very minor amount of research, and I am only about 1/2 way through the manual at this time. I am truly enjoying the process and the results, and I feel confident that the camera itself is partially responsible for this positive experience. All this not to mention how many compliments I get on the white body of the camera...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera I'm a photography student and have taken tons of photos. I bought the KX initially as a back up for my K20. I could not be happier. The KX takes great photos. IMO is spanks the big boys can/nik. The only downside is that it is not weather resistant like the K20, K7, or K5. That's not really a downside though all things considered. Don't be a sheep and follow the rest. Make your own decision and shoot the best. Buy Pentax!
