The Wimbereley AP-554 Replacement Foot replaces the stock foot on the rotation collar of the Nikon 500mm f/4 AF-S (I, II & VR) and 200-400mm f/4 AF-S (VR) lenses. The low-profile foot creates a lower center of gravity for your long lens & camera body, making for a better balance when you use the lens with a gimbal head (such as the Wimberley Head or the Sidekick).

Taller than the Wimberley AP-553, the AP-554 provides enough clearance between the lens body and the foot so you can use it as a lens handle. Its longer 5.1" length makes it better balanced with smaller DSLR camera bodies, and it's compatible with all Nikon professional and prosumer bodies – even as the lenses are used with teleconverters (see Compatibility below). In designing this replacement foot, Wimberley used finite material analysis to determine the best balance between stiffness and weight savings. While keeping the foot as light as was appropriate, the manufacturer refused to sacrifice any necessary rigidity.

The bottom of the foot is milled to accept an Arca Swiss-style quick-release clamp, and it also features tapped holes for direct attachment to both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 studs on tripod heads and monopods.

    AP-554 Replacement Foot for Nikon 500mm f/4 AF-S (I, II & VR) and 200-400mm f/4 AF-S (VR) Lenses is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from good investment in stability. I mounted this foot on my 500 VR before I put the lens on the camera. The foot appears to be stiffer than the OEM foot which makes for a more stable lens that is less prone to vibration. The foot also allows the lens to have a lower profile, especially considering the milled slots for the QR does not require the added weight and height of an accessory plate. The foot itself is heavier than the OEM foot, but add a plate, and you are going lighter with the replacement foot. The foot is long enough to allow my D700 sans battery pack to balance on my gimbal head. There is no issue at all with heavier cameras (D2x/F5). The plate is high enough to allow the foot to be used as a handle for carrying the lens. Despite it's cost, it is a worthy accessory for the 500 VR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A necessity The Nikon foot is useless (really, for 8000 smackers they couldn't include a usable foot?). This foot is all you'll want, stable, low-profile, and of course it mates perfectly with the Wimberley head. The only problem I've had with it is that the screws will occasionally loosen, so keep that Allen wrench handy when you go in the field.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect craftsmanship. This is my second AP-554. I had one on my 200-400mm lens and this one will go on a 300mm f/2.8 This should be standard on the heavy Nikon glass. It's much better than the stock foot which is too short and too flimsy plus there is no need for a tripod plate since it has the arca-swiss groove built in. You can also install 2 small hex safety screws at the ends of the plate to prevent the lens from falling off your ball head. It can also be used as a handle to transport the lens comfortably. I think it's cheap considering how much better it is than the regular Nikon footers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect foot for 500VR When the heck lens manufacturers are going to realize that Arca Swiss is the standard? Every one I have seen in the field buys a similar foot or a plate for their big lenses. Every one seems to know this but Nikon, Canon, Sony, ect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT WITH GIMBAL HEAD Works great mounting Nikon 500mm f/4 direct to gimbal head (the one that starts with a W). Only problem is soft lens hood that came with lens will not fit under lens and foot. Makes for small problem, but not insurmountable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well This replacement foot works great on the wimberley heads and being longer than the nikon standard is easyer to grab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great Product It gives strength and stability to my lens, indispensable

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Should have known How good the Wimberley replacement foot would be.Fit and finish, great. Its shorter than the Nikon foot but still tall enough to easily use for a handle.Because its shorter than the Nikon foot it should be more ridged.Nice smooth profile, easy on the hand with the weight of camera and lens.Much better solution than an add on lens rail when it comes time to mount my 500mm on to the Wimberly gimball head.
