Nikon 25583B overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon Coolpix P50 Digital Camera is a blend orthodox camera styling with an advanced feature set and operating ease. Built on a custom application of Nikon's innovative EXPEED digital image processing concept, the Coolpix P50 is built to provide optimum performance and maximum image quality. It also features a 3.6x Zoom-Nikkor lens with 28mm wide-angle capability that ably covers a range from panoramic landscapes to close-up portraits. Plus the camera incorporates Nikon's Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization system which compensates for camera shake or movement by unsteady subjects to achieve sharper results, along with extended light sensitivity up to ISO 2000 to further helps prevent blurred shots when shooting in lower light, or when capturing fast-moving subjects.

From its functional body design, with stable grip and rubber thumb rest, to the intuitive operation of its Mode dial, complete with a setting for Manual shooting mode, the Coolpix P50 is extremely versatile. Its optical viewfinder enables accurate composition, even in bright sunlight, making it a handy complement to the bright 2.4-inch LCD monitor on the back of the body. Power is supplied by readily available AA-size batteries, which means the Coolpix P50 can be used in virtually any location without worrying about recharging or running out of power.

8.1 Megapixel Resolution
With 8.1 million pixels of image information, the Nikon Coolpix P50 can produce stunning, photo quality prints up to 16" x 20".
3.6x Optical Zoom Wide-Angle Nikkor Lens
The Zoom Nikkor Lens incorporates exclusive ED lens elements that deliver crisp, clear images, and provides a 3.6x optical zoom with wide angle capability (28mm-102mm equivalent) while the Macro capability lets you get as close as 2" to your subject.
Electronic VR Image Stabilization
The Coolpix P50 features Electronic VR capability to provide impressive image stabilizing performance. Using a built-in angular velocity sensor, the Electronic VR system applies in-camera image processing to help overcome the effects of camera shake and produce satisfyingly sharp images.
Easy-to-use Shooting Modes
In addition to a selection of 15 scene-optimized modes and five different movie modes, the handy Mode dial also allows users to easily select the Programmed Auto [P] mode which automatically selects the optimal camera settings, and the Manual [M] exposure mode which provides full control over both the aperture and shutter speed settings to provide greater personal control over camera operation.
Nikon In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
The Red-Eye Fix system automatically corrects for most instances of the red-eye effect that is commonly caused by the use of a built-in flash on a compact camera.
Nikon D-Lighting
The Nikon D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by automatically brightening the dark areas in the picture, while maintaining the brighter areas of the image.
Nikon Face-Priority AF
The Face-Priority AF system automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame for crisp, sharp portraits.
Face-Focus AF Mode
Nikon's innovative Face-priority AF has been updated to not only perform with improved speed and efficiency, but also to better find and then focus on people's faces for crisp, clear results time after time. This improved functionality is applied to the handy Face-focus AF shooting mode, which determines optimum focus and exposure when a face is detected within the framed shot.
High ISO Capability
Covering an impressive sensitivity range from ISO 50 all the way up to ISO 2000, the Coolpix P50 makes it easier to take great-looking pictures in lower lighting conditions, or to capture fast moving subjects with outstanding clarity. The Coolpix P50 accurately measures available light to automatically select the optimal sensitivity setting for the shot, while its image-processing engine with enhanced noise reduction preserves high image quality when shooting at high ISO settings.
Built-in and Expandable Memory
The camera includes 52MB of built-in memory, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards.
Bright 2.4" LCD and Optical Viewfinder
The Coolpix P50 is equipped with a large 2.4" LCD that is great for viewing images anywhere, anytime; and the anti-reflective coating makes it easier for everyone to see and enjoy your images. Plus the camera incorporates an Optical Viewfinder for taking pictures in any type of lighting conditions.

PictBridge and ImageLink Compatibility

Nikon 25583B reviews

Coolpix P50 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from smart camera for smart price I bought this camera from BH after few days searching for price I would like to pay for camera in this class. I need somthing small enough to carry in my pocket but good enough to satisfied my needs. This one it has all. You can buy better camera, but for more money, or cheeper but not good as this one. First thing I like on Nikon P50 is wide angle lenses, powerfull flash for small camera, video recording with zooming and sound. No optical stabilizer but electronic, but good enough. Pictures is very sharp, acurate colors. Lag time is fine, focus is fast in good light, little slow in dark, but what camera in this class is not. I am happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I was looking for I have a Nikon D80 with wide angle lenses and the P50 is what I needed for times when I just need to point and shoot. I'm glad I waited this long for this type of camera to upgrade from the Nikon Coolpix 880. I like the new features the P50 has to offer. I would rather have the on/off switch than the on/off button.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More features than in specs... This cam has more features than is denoted on specs. Has a huge 180 pages manual and you have to read it to benefit of its full resources. Scene modes are very well balanced. I was able to shot 150 pics of fireworks in a 20 minute window, with a tripod and outstanding results (with 2GB SD card). Do not spend money with SD when you can buy SDHC for P50 and others. They are really fast. Go for a class 6 card. People that say this cam is slow, probably has slow cards. It has a 56 MB internal memory that is a useful backup if you end you 999 8.1 mpx pictures... AA bats and viewfinder is a must for use anywhere. I use Duracell's 30 minute NiMH, and Rayovac 15 minute. They work's. Face recognition up to 2 faces. Help in all menus in several languages. Very sharp and short distance macro. Very fast auto-focus. Three different indoors scene modes. Bat port has a latch and no force to close it. White balance combined with wide angle, long range, flash and lenses let you have a very color precise pic of a group of up to 8 people side by side. But one of the best unregistered feature of this camera is its videocam mode with 640x480 30 fps very stable and with and amazing auto-focus in video mode. With a 4 GB you will get 1 hour of video in this quality. Nikon software for the computer is great for downloading and organizing pictures. P50 has another very undocumented feature: you can setup up the camera for the type of batteries you are running - alkaline, NiMH and LiOn - so the voltages are internally setup correctly. I just enforce: read cameras manuals as they are getting very, very complex and get the fastest memory card possible. For me there are only to problems. First is the rubber cover of USB out that is very small and difficult to operate. I almost ever let it open. The USB plug itself is a Nikon proprietary with no compatibility with your old cables. And the second is the habit of when you are using NiMH or LiON there is no advice that you are going close to the end of bats and camera shut of by surprise (as all other AA and AAA cameras). When it happens, and lenses are open, they will be open until you put new bats on it. So, ever have backup bats.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good deal with features I needed Without going to SLR, this is one of the few cameras with 28mm lens. A nice feature for interior shots. The panoramic assist software works pretty intuitively. I've been happy with picture quality, which I'd say is above average for this price range. I will likely add a lithium / rechargable battery pack accessory.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a Nikon but...'s not as good as you might expect. I had the p-and-s from Pana FX-01 before and it handels low light better. AA batteries are nice but the camera drains them fast. Viewfinder is nice, too, but since it's small and you have a display you're ending up not using it at all. It's not an SLR, that's for sure and you shouldnt expect that quality. But if you are fine with Quick-Time video files from Panasonic get A Panasonic. Alex Film and Photo Pro

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pictures; great features I'm a weekend pro (doing weddings and portraits and lots oftravel). This little camera has everything I wanted when Idon't want to lug my big camera and lenses. I use this forthose trips when I want a great camera that I can tuck in myshirt pocket. It has a nice 28-105 lens (yep, 28mm in acompact camera - a big plus to me). It has a viewfinder(for us old 35mm guys that prefer looking through a tinywindow). And it has VR for those pesky indoor shots thatyou want to capture without flash (or when the built-inflash is just not powerful enough to brighten your subject). It uses AA batteries (a bonus to me because I have had toomany times when the proprietary batteries die and I'mnowhere near a charger). The D-lighting feature is awesome. Some of my underexposed shots were corrected - in thecamera. And it has a nice big viewing screen. The onlydrawback is the grip. It fits great in your hand and iscomfortable to hold, but it protrudes out and makes itnot-quite-packable in those flat spaces like some otherperfectly flush cameras (it still fits very comfortably in ashirt pocket). Overall, it's a great, great camera. Ihighly recommend it. Expertise: Semi-pro Problems Encountered: I knocked it down 2 stars for the grip design. It did notneed to be that big (at least in my non-engineer opinion). No other problems. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Coolpix 3200, 4100, D100, D200, (D300 on order)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from out of the box and just shoot this camera is wonderfull. Has a viewfinder, you can shut the lcd off and save your battery, has date stamp, how many cameras do that, my wife wanted date stamp and Nikon delivered, not very many that do this. THis camera is awesome, with the 28mm you can stitch panoramas and the image stabilizer is unheard of at this price. way to go Nikon Thanks

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice camera for money Bought the camera for use at work. Simple design and easy to use. Controls are where you want them. A nice camera to throw in your pocket and take with you. The black color gives it a bit of pro look, much nicer then the standard silver for cameras of this type.
