Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Overview

An ideal portrait-length prime, the Canon EF mount 85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC from Rokinon pairs a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with a short-telephoto focal length to suit portraiture and other applications where shallow depth of field is desired. This 85mm f/1.4 lens features a Canon EF mount, and is compatible with full-frame sensors or APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
A fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over your focus position for shallow depth of field shooting.
One hybrid aspherical element helps to control chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.
This manual focus lens features an internal focus design to maintain the overall lens length during use and the front filter mount does not rotate when focusing to better enable working with polarizers, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning.
A rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.

If you can live with manual focus this is definitely worth a look at half the price of the Canon (auto focus) equivalent.

Very good value for money. Rokinon 1.4/85 manual focus and manual aperture lens for full frame Sony E mount. Sharp lens wide open at f/1.4, no complaints.

Good for astrophotography

I purchased this lens to fill a gap between my 135mm and 50mm lenses for astrophotography. I have used this lens on numerous occasions now and I am very pleased with the results. I pair this lens with a Canon T6i for wider images than I get using a 135mm, but more detail than I get using a 50mm. I step it up to f/2.8 and get round stars to the edges.

Another Great Rokinon Lens for Astrophotography

This is the third Rokinon UMC lens I own for astrophotography having already purchased the 24mm f1.4 and the 135mm f2 from B&H. Although I cant comment on how they perform for street, landscape or portrait photography, they make excellent lenses for astro work at a friendly price tag. Users used to auto focus will be disappointed as these lenses do not offer AF, but their corner to corner sharpness along with very low coma make them almost perfect on unforgiving star images. Stop them down at least one stop and they really shine as is typical of any lens with this wide an aperture. B&H has always excelled as my go to source for everything photographic.

I've heard a lot of good reviews with Rokinon's design and performance. The moment I started testing with this new lens, I knew it had such valuable quality. It's more affordable and yet carries such a strong character

just another bad one?

3 stars because my usage of the lens could be on the extreme end. It may work for other applications. My one and only use for the lens was astrophotography. I therefore gave it THE TEST - stars. I tested the lens with a Canon 6D (full-frame) and a Canon 7D-II (APS-C). I will comment on the 7D-II results since a cropped sensor should hide some of a lens' imperfections. The test: using LiveView, I centered a moderately bright star and used 10X for focusing. I took a center photo, then adjusted such that I could take photos of the same star in each corner of the FoV. The results: I used FastRawViewer to inspect the photos. The center star photo was fairly sharp and the star was round. The corner star photos had significant distortion of the star. For all photos, all mid to fairly bright stars displayed significant purple/magenta fringing. I repeated this test on a few different stars. The results were the same. While I could reduce the fringing effect with some manual adjustments using DxO PhotoLab 6, it would be problematic if working on a batch of photos for stacking. The lens may work well/okay for daylight imaging. I did not test that. Of course, it could be the notoriously poor QC for Samyang/Rokinon lenses and I got a bad one. I did not bother getting a replacement, and just returned the lens for refund. Buyer Beware.

An amazing lens for the price

This lens comes with no electronics at all, and it is as manual as it gets. But what you do get is some nice sharp glass. The lens feels well made and the focus throw is long and perfectly dampened. This lens is pretty good in the center wide open, but it really shines at f2.8. Excellent value for money.

What the version with AE chip can do vs without chip, on my Canon EOS RP, regarding focus and exposure ?
Asked by: Oldrin
The AE (Automatic Exposure) chip in the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens for Canon EF with AE Chip is designed to relay focus confirmation to the viewfinder in the camera, enable the use of auto-exposure modes, and transfers EXIF data between the lens and camera.

With the Canon EF version, is the aperture always at the whatever setting, or does it trigger with shutter (like a "normal" SLR lens). i.e., does viewfinder get very dark at high f-stops?
Asked by: Barnaby
The aperture remains wide open until you take the photo. The viewfinder will not get dark unless you activate the depth of field preview,
