Velbon 45L overview

  • 1Description

The UT 45L 6-Section Aluminum Tripod with PHD-42Q 4-Way Head is a sturdy tripod that folds out to a working height of 61.6" from the tiniest of packages. At less than a foot long (11.6") when its twist-lock legs are retracted and folded up 180° so that the feet meet the included head, the UT 45L is ideal for stowing in a backpack or even a tote bag, for the ultimate in low-profile yet high-performance camera support. Lightweight for traveling, the tripod weighs just 2.7 lb and supports up to 6.6 lb.

The tripod's maximum height is 5.3 times its folded length. The secret to the UT 45L's tight package is its section count: the aluminum-alloy legs have six sections each, and the center column has two.

The PHD-42Q pan/tilt head features 360° panning, front-to-back tilt, and side-to-side tilt with independent locks for each movement. A QB-62 quick-release plate and a carrying case are included.

    Velbon 45L reviews

    UT 45L 6-Section Aluminum Tripod with PHD-42Q Pan/Tilt Head is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from UT 45L 6-Section Aluminum Tripod I purchased this tripod to take to the London Olympics as photographic equipment was restricted to a maximum of twelve inches in length. It is a clever device and very compact. With a little practice I was able to remove it from it's carry-bag and fully extend it and mount the camera in less than thirty seconds. The tricky part is learning to unlock the leg sections. It is not difficult, it just takes a little practice to unlock all the sections of the leg when you twist the foot. It is stable enough for a D300 and 70-200 2.8 if you let it settle a little. I am pleased with it and recommend it to anyone that wants a compact tripod for travel or to carry in a daypack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a LOT of tripod in a small package This is small and light enough to fit in my messenger bag... extends to a full height in 30 seconds... brings the camera (Canon 60D) to 4 below eye level, which is very comfortable for me (I'm 6'1). I dumped the head and installed a spare Joby X head, which fits nicely. (except the Velbon's has a 1/4 stud... that's annoying... easily fixed with an insert, but still annoying). I'm taking this on a 10 day trip to Europe, we'll see how it travels. (last thing, I chose this model because it seems very similar to other Velbons, but thirty bucks cheaper... not sure why)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfec travel tripod - very strong I travel a great deal with my Canon 60D with my walkaround 18-200mm lens. I often shoot video with my 60D and need a tripod for stability, but flying with a regular tripod was a pain. I tried using a smaller comsumer-style tripod, but it was not strong enough to hold the weight of my lens. This tripod is plenty strong enough to hold my heavy camera and large 18-200 lens, yets folds into a very, very compact items for traveling. It was EXACTLY what I was looking for, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I need for travel I was looking for a heavy-duty, yet compact tripod that would be easy to fly with. I was tired to have to carry on my tripod, or having to check a hard case solely for a tripod. This guy is perfect for all of those purposes. It's so compact that I can pack it in my laptop carry on case. In addition, it is super study, made of metal parts, and even thought the head might not be the most fluid in the world - it works perfect for what I need - straight forward video production and still photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from compact and versatile This is a brilliant tripod. I use this for shooting video with my Panasonic GH3 and it helps to round out my compact, pro setup. It's tiny but extends to full height. It's light, but super sturdy. The carrying case is perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost Like my other lightweight Velbon tripod, this one provides a solid stable support for my full frame D800E with 500mm attached - about 5 pounds total load. For travel, this is overkill, as I don't like to haul around 20 pounds of camera, lenses and accessories when I travel. I'd be happy with something flimsier if it were about half the weight. Something that would help me steady the camera, but not freeze it, enabling a more compact design as well. But this is as close as I could find and delivers as promised in size and weight, so no surprise. It takes up about as much space in my backpack as a body with a 300mm tele lens attached. It sets up and folds down very easily and quickly, once you get the hang of it. Construction quality is, in my view, very good with nice finish and tight fits. The head is nicely suitable for making panorama's or shooting video, but, of course adds bulk and weight. I switch to a ball head for travel.I'll continue my quest for a single purpose travel tripod well under 2 pounds in weight and folds down under 8 inches that I can use for portable support instead of looking for a handy fencepost or piece of furniture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A+++ Very good product, you should use if you have a heavy camera!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lil' tripod What a clever design! Folding so small and, equally importantly, quickly. Considering how compact and light it is I find it to be quite sturdy. That said, don't expect it to feel like it's heavier brethren. I use this with a small spotting scope and i will likely seek a different head for it. For such use it's preferable to have separate control over pan and tilt. I suspect it'll be hard to find a head i like that's compact enough to fit within the upward folding legs.
